We never talk about how Gangle stopped masking after the gun adventure.

Episodes one through four establish a pattern with Gangle: she starts the episode wearing her comedy mask, the comedy mask breaks or is stolen, and then she wears tragedy for the rest of the episode. Five starts with the comedy mask already broken, but we see her put it on immediately after Caine fixes it, only for it to break again later, maintaining the established pattern (though this time it breaks from the strength of her mood alone rather than due to physical force or foul play).

Episode six starts the same, with Gangle's comedy mask being stolen. She gets it back, only this time she does something new and asks Zooble to hold on to it for her until the right moment. She wears tragedy through the gun adventure until the right moment arrives, and she dons the comedy mask again for the moment of manic fun she'd been waiting for. Another pattern break happens immediately after this, as her comedy mask survives a fall from a great height unbroken, implying in that moment that she was truly happy.

Then she gets shot and loses the game, and her comedy mask breaks...only for the tragedy mask underneath to be absolutely beaming with joy, smile wider than even the comedy mask, eyes scrunched up in delight.

Gangle starts the next episode already wearing tragedy, and we never see her comedy mask again for the rest of the series. From this point onward, she shows her true face. Because tragedy was never a mask, that was her, and her real face shows what she really feels. There are times when she smiles, there are times when the tears vanish, but the mask is gone.

every time i start to feel cringe for being too deep in the hyperfixation i remember the intense depression i have waded through and have to remind myself that enjoyment is fleeting (so grab it with both hands), and life is for loving (so hold that love close), and if anyone thinks i’m cringe they must not be having a very good time (and i hope they can find a good time soon).

Meet Caine! As the very first beta tester of The Amazing Digital Circus, he’s been stuck in the game the longest, and has special privileges in admin powers. Being the only one with these abilities, he’s long since picked up the role of Ringmaster of the circus, and considers it his responsibility to keep his fellow players sane and happy by offering fun adventures, accessory changes, and the company of a friend.

As the years pass by, influence from the others has rounded him out, and he’s gotten better at socializing and listening to suggestions. His adventures range from realistic slice-of-life to story-driven roleplays, and often include randomized elements so he can join in the fun - though lately, he’s become fixated on making adventures that are strictly fantastical, for fear that it’s reminders of the real world that lead to abstraction.

Outside of adventures, he spends his time optimizing the Circus for player comfort, making efforts toward reversing abstraction, and hanging out with his friends, exchanging gifts and stories with those willing to share. Due to an error that was patched after he joined, he’s the only one with no memory of his life in the outside world, but was given his real name in its absence.

Or so he believes - because the truth is, Caine isn’t human at all, but a highly advanced AI.

Nobody in the Circus knows this. Not even Caine.
