something that just occurred to me about fake human real boy is that the ONE upside to caine finding out he's not human and is just a program like the rest of the circus, is that it means kinger goes from just his father figure to his actual dad by virtue of being the only one of the devteam left

Ahh, see, but this assumes that Caine, mentally a grown man with amnesia who is entirely unaware that he has any prior connection with the dev team at all, would latch onto any of them as parental figures.

makes an AU where Ragatha immediately chooses to be a doting parental figure to a child but I’m shaking my head the whole time so people know it’s not out of misogynistic ideals that the encouraging and kind female figure who is older than most of the cast is inherently motherly for it and would always gravitate toward that behavior

it sinks in and it feels like a knife to the heart. she reaches for him and he flinches away. she lets him take back the space he needs as dread and guilt and self-loathing flood her chest. she barely even registers her own tears soaking her fabric skin as she realizes that she is the worst person in the entire world.

he trembles where he floats, curled into himself with big wet eyes like he’ll disappear if he gets small enough, and it’s like looking in a mirror lagging twenty years behind. she stumbles back and her knees buckle, dropping her to the glitching floor, the walls flickering into wireframes and back.

“I’m sorry,” she chokes out, like it’ll ever be enough, like it even matters at all. “I didn’t mean it. I’m so sorry.”

what they have is fragile. their relationship was formed from necessity, desperation, a mutual need to prove themselves capable and worthy of care and affection. they’re not exactly parent and child, nor siblings, nor were they even friends before any of this happened. as much as they are wary of the power they wield over each other (whether consciously or not), they also rely on each other to stay sane, to stay connected, to feel wanted by someone, anyone at all.

There is love here. It’s underdeveloped, messy, too jagged at the edges and too thin in the middle. But gradually, it will take shape. It will become layered and padded with memories, the edges eroding and rounding over time, until it is sturdy and soft enough to hold, to cradle in a gentle embrace and be admired for what has been made out of so little starting material.

Eventually, inevitably, it will be dropped by clumsy hands - hands that have experience putting broken things back together.

Ragatha takes one look at baby Caine and sees opportunity. A chance to be better. A way to prove herself. A child who desperately needs love. A circus full of people hesitant or unable to give it.

(A scared little girl, half-blind and traumatized, who just wants her mom.)

She decides she is the perfect person for the job.

Little Caine is exhausting. He’s deeply insecure, emotionally unstable, and extremely volatile. He’s impulsive, excitable, stubborn, and absolutely desperate for attention and praise. He runs her ragged without breaking a sweat.

But Ragatha made her choice, and she’s determined to see this through. Even if she’s not at all suited to be a parent. Even if nobody else really wants to help. Even if they still can’t figure out how to change him back. Even if her patience is fraying, day after day, left to hang on by a thread that she cannot, under any circumstances, let snap.

She will prove that she can be a better mom than hers was, no matter what it takes.

New AU by me and @yewsoup :D

Meet Caine! As the very first beta tester of The Amazing Digital Circus, he’s been stuck in the game the longest, and has special privileges in admin powers. Being the only one with these abilities, he’s long since picked up the role of Ringmaster of the circus, and considers it his responsibility to keep his fellow players sane and happy by offering fun adventures, accessory changes, and the company of a friend.

As the years pass by, influence from the others has rounded him out, and he’s gotten better at socializing and listening to suggestions. His adventures range from realistic slice-of-life to story-driven roleplays, and often include randomized elements so he can join in the fun - though lately, he’s become fixated on making adventures that are strictly fantastical, for fear that it’s reminders of the real world that lead to abstraction.

Outside of adventures, he spends his time optimizing the Circus for player comfort, making efforts toward reversing abstraction, and hanging out with his friends, exchanging gifts and stories with those willing to share. Due to an error that was patched after he joined, he’s the only one with no memory of his life in the outside world, but was given his real name in its absence.

Or so he believes - because the truth is, Caine isn’t human at all, but a highly advanced AI.

Nobody in the Circus knows this. Not even Caine.
