In a recent survey conducted in Anchorage, over 80% of the respondents strongly agree that "hardworking people should be able to afford housing and still have money left over for food and basic necessities." City won't pursue homeless housing near Kincaid Park | Anchorage | ADN.com

The city is dropping its application for land next to Kincaid Park that would have been used for housing and services for the city's homeless people and those at risk of becoming homeless.

City seeks federal property near Kincaid Park for homeless housing | Anchorage | ADN.com

Anchorage city government is trying to obtain a 133-acre tract of surplus federal property next to the international airport and Kincaid Park, and is proposing that much of it be used for housing and support services for the city's homeless and people at risk of losing their homes.  A lack of affordable housing and the high cost of living in Anchorage make it difficult for the homeless population to progress beyond short-term options like the Brother Francis Shelter.

“I call it housing gridlock. It started out to be about homelessness, but it quickly became about how you cannot end homelessness if you don’t build a space for people to move to—it has been increasingly tight over the past five years,” Brown said. “The bulk of the people who are holding onto the lower-end [rental] stock, who you would expect to move, they can’t find affordable options.”

In order for a family to pay bills, afford groceries and clothing, purchase school items for children and enjoy a basic quality of life, no more than 30% of income should be spent on housing. Unfortunately, many families In Anchorage are spending much more than 30% for their housing needs. Anchorage is 20th in the nation for cost of housing. 

Affordable housing matters to everyone in the community. No matter what your income or your family size, you should be able to find decent, affordable (to you) housing options in your community.

We have seen first-hand how stable housing positively impacts families, children and communities.
