Unusual: Loudspeakers
Over the holiday, I am yearning for new audio inputs and outputs... To address signals in unusual ways I have not experienced before. My mind turns to the work of Bill Fontana, and the desire to pick apart his gear closet. In 2011 while attending art school, fontana gave a lecture and co-taught a class on sound sculpture. I attended his lecture, and was most struck by the choice of equipment used in his projects; ranging from accelerometers, vibration sensors, ultrasonic speakers, and so on. His mode of communication in the lecture left me with the impression that he was wise, but perhaps at the service of the institution, to speak across disciplines and selected by admissions to teach in sculpture. At the time I was very hesitant to become involved with materials, or the practice of sculpture, as the field required an environmental size commitment. If the class was advertized to focus on sound sensors and use, the story would be different.
Now though when I reflect on the laboratory like time in my life, and building audio devices, I feel Fontana touches a little on many possible ways of detecting sound and I can examine his work for the use of devices. At times he voices manufacture names in the cases of incredibly high end gear, i.e. the Meyer SB-2Parabolic Wide-Range Sound Beam, 13k per unit.

Shotgun Microphones: Justice is blind
Every morning I wake up, watch democracy now, and look at shot gun microphones online. Looking at microphones as photo is quite problematic, as the visual signals have little to do with the quality of sound. Yet the wind screen; 'blimps', 'muffs' and stands all conger images of pure directional fantasy There comes a point where I have to stop and question this fixation ... or better, find sites with audio samples rather than tasty visible treats.
Of the audio examples here, the Sennheiser MKH-416 sounds the clearest and would be the microphone of choice for professional work. This test seems well controlled and straight forward.
I also came across this test with a wider range of microphones tested, but found the ideas to be separate and hard to follow the chain of logic in identifying which microphone is being used. In the first example, I enjoy seeing the body location to the microphone, as knowing the distance is equally important.

Sprouted Buckwheat Granola
Before leaving the Bay Area for Oklahoma, I bought several raw cookbooks and decided to focus my time at home on preparing luxurious snacks.
At the beginning of each recipe is usually a soaking of grains or nuts. I've run in to the issue of down time after soaking, and proper storage of grains awaiting use.
No soak has been of greater majesty than the buckwheat seed. Upon the initial drain of water the consistency of the liquid is slick and gooey, a texture I would like to find a purpose for. I allowed the buckwheat to drain slowly, and left it sitting somewhat damp on the counter for 2 to 3 days covered with a glass lid. When I returned, to my surprise the seeds had sprouted.
From the recipe link, I changed the content somewhat to what I had available and already soaked. I used 5 dates for the half cup, but the mixture is not the sweetest. For the two apples I used Asian apple pears. Instead of soaked cranberry water and cranberries, I used pineapple juice and coconut flakes. Almonds for walnuts and chia seeds for sesame seeds.
For the dehydrator, I used a convection oven at the lowest temperature overnight, leaving the oven ajar with a rolled towel nudged between the door at the oven frame. I found the technique really works using the convection fan only. The granola closest to the door dries much quicker than the middle of the pan and rear portion. Leaving the oven on over night was not an issue, as the oven monitors its temperature and appear to turn off a majority of the time.
In the future I would like to add some kind of raisins or berry to the mix, which is the only thing I really miss. I would also considering adding two more dates and larger variety of grains. Achieving a dehydration process will now expand the available recipe I can attempt onward.
