I did not think it would be possible to find a manga (or mangaka for that matter) as uniquely enjoyable as Taiyo Matsumoto. However Daisuke Igarashi, with his sprawling tale Children of the Sea has seemingly done the impossible. With it’s existential, thought provoking story, and artwork that could only be described as “perfect”, Children of the Sea is just hitting all the right notes with me. Just finished vol.3 and I’m anxiously awaiting the next two. And speaking of Taiyo Matsumoto, here is a joint conversation between the two dynamic creators. Couldn’t give these works a higher recommendation.

Ocean Waves (海がきこえる) illustrated chapters ran in Animage Magazine circa 1991 prior to the animated special. The art work is by Studio Ghibli character designer Katsuya Kondo (近藤勝也) who also designed the characters for Kiki’s Delivery Service, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, and From Up On Poppy Hill.
