After learning of what had happened with Negan, learning of the FAMILY they had lost, she had known that she wouldn’t be able to just continue isolating herself from all of them. Whilst she may have told Daryl that going after The Saviors would cause her to lose that last part of herself that she was holding on to, she had to do SOMETHING. Seeing what had happened to Benjamin, finding out what Richard had been wanting to do, that had all been the last straw, had been what persuaded her to return to The Kingdom, and stand by Ezekiel in his decision to join forces with Alexandria.
By the time they had arrived, the gunfire that they had heard in the distance had ceased, but it appeared that something had been about to go down when Shiva launched herself forward at a man, just ahead of herself and Ezekiel. And when they did come into view, when they saw Rick and Carl on their knees, who she assumed was Negan already scrambling to get away, they didn’t waste time on starting up the gunfire again. With the mindset she was in, she was focused —– was for now, pushing back any guilt, any pain that doing what she had to do would cause. Right now, she COULDN’T let all of that affect her, not if she wanted her family to LIVE. But one thing she definitely did not miss, as she turned quickly to fire at approaching Saviors, was the sight of her sister, a shade of red beginning to cover her, simply sink to the ground.
It was a sick feeling that ran through her. Though she had lost many, that pain? It NEVER got easier, and for moments she was almost frozen, it all having hit her far too hard. It was almost like the commotion happening around her, all the gunshots seemed to phase out, and all she could think about was how she had YET AGAIN, failed Charlotte. There was a very strong part of her that just felt like giving up. Let one of them shoot her too and just stop all of this. But it was when she saw the streak of color, which was Shiva dive in front of her for yet another Savior that she seemed to snap back to reality. Maybe Charlotte wasn’t dead — if she wasn’t, there wasn’t much she could do right now. Helping her would have to come afterwards unless she wanted the both of them to be dead. But on the chance that she was, Carol was going to make sure that The Saviors died too. As many of them as possible.
She knows that she’s starting to fade in and out of consciousness. There is a ringing in her ears, and she doesn’t know if it’s from the continuous gunshots, or the fact that she’s fighting off the will to blackout. If she does that, she doesn’t know if she’ll come back. And she’ll be damned if she dies without saying goodbye to her sister, the only person she’s even living for anymore.
The silence is eerie. There is an air of death around them, but the gunfire is no more. From what she can see, the Saviors have ran. This battle was won by Alexandria, with the help of The Kingdom, and Hilltop as well. They would likely have to prepare for even more, but for now, they were safe. For now, they were okay.
The initial shock from her wound was starting to wear off, and now the pain was really setting in. She was trying her best to be quiet, because you could never be sure who was around. She kept quiet, but the tears were streaming down her face now. And quite truthfully, this was one of the few times she felt like cursing every word in the book.
