Another floraverse character. sendhelpfloraverseistoomuchforme
Name: Renda Species: Half manticore and half pandango (one of my favorite entries in this recent contest!) Update: the pandango link is broken, since the post has been taken down. The speciesâ creator has allowed me to reupload it with credit, so expect it to show up in the future. Pronouns: she/her/hers Affinity: Light and Sound. Her affinity for Light is much stronger than her Sound affinity. Languages Known: Aurorian, Common (with a strong Aurorian accent) Born in: Gnawth
Has decompression venom.
All of the orange-to-red parts of her body are bioluminescent, sans her nose.
Enjoys reading, swords, and strategic board games.
Being part pandango, her dance style is something akin to a more dancerly drunken fist (yeah, I know that's a martial arts style, but I'm gonna make it work!)
I don't have many details on her yet, so this submission is probably going to go through a few "ghost" edits until I have something I like. For now, I'm just gonna keep the word "abrasive" in mind for her.

Project: Kate editor, free and open-source advanced text editor for programmers: kate-editor.org/ Character: Kate the woodpecker, mascot of Kate editor Description: Kate the woodpecker is the mascot of Kate Editor, a free and open-source advanced text editor for programmers. Kate's maintainer Christoph Cullmann contacted me for a mascot after my Konqi design went official by KDE, and this was her initial design. I was going to give her treatments like Konqi, but never find a proper way. Some day I will make her more suitable as a mascot for Kate editor.
Why a woodpecker? In discussion with Christoph I said I was going to draw a humming bird, but the mascot turned out to look more like a woodpecker. And the sound a woodpecker knocks trees reminded me of keyboard clicks.
Why a girl? Kate is female because of her name. I thought about other names like Klicky and Katherine, but I would rather save them for other future KDE projects to pick up as their names.
Design elements: 1) â{}â on the chest, â/â of the feathers, and â*â in the eyes; 2) The wing feathers also resembles multiple document tabs; 3) Color scheme inspired by doxygen source code highlighting.

âKepler-13Ab (artistâs impression)â by Hubble ESA, some rights reserved: CC BY 4.01.
Hubble ESA description
This artistâs impression shows the seething hot planet Kepler-13Ab that circles very close to its host star, Kepler-13A. Seen in the background is the star's binary companion, Kepler-13B, and the third member of the multiple-star system is the orange dwarf star Kepler-13C.
The exoplanet is classified as a hot Jupiter but is actually six times more massive than Jupiter. Unlike chilly Jupiter, this exoplanet is one of the hottest known of the hot Jupiters, with a dayside temperature of more than 2700 °C. Another difference between Jupiter and Kepler-13Ab is that the exoplanet is so close to its star that it is tidally locked. One side keeps a permanent face to the star, and the other side is perpetually dark.
On the nighttime side the planet's immense gravity pulls down titanium oxide and precipitates as snow. Observations of the planet's atmospheric temperature profile made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope represent the first time astronomers have detected this precipitation process, called a "cold trap," on an exoplanet. Without titanium oxide to absorb incoming starlight on the daytime side, the atmospheric temperature grows colder with increasing altitude. Normally, titanium oxide in the atmospheres of hot Jupiters absorbs light and reradiates it as heat, making the atmosphere grow warmer at higher altitudes. The Kepler-13 system is 1730 light-years from Earth.
The research teams consists of Thomas Beatty, Ming Zhao, Jason Wright, and Ronald Gilliland (Pennsylvania State University, University Park), Nikku Madhusudhan (University of Cambridge, U.K.), Angelos Tsiaras (University College London, U.K.), and Avi Shporer and Heather Knutson (California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California).

"By Katie Brinn
The scene in Hong Kong over the past week has gone from chaos to calm and back again, as tensions grow and pro-democracy throngs clash with pro-China demonstrators.
It all started on Sept. 26, when hundreds of students gathered in a courtyard in Central Hong Kong, demanding an end to Chinese oppression and control. Chinaâs modern history with Hong Kong has been complicated, to say the least. For more than 150 years, Hong Kong belonged to Britain. Then in 1997 Britain handed the thriving metropolis back to China in a political deal called âOne Country, Two Systems,â which allowed Hong Kong to maintain some of the freedoms and independence mainland Chinese people do not have, such as freedom of the press and the right to assemble. The people of Hong Kong would even be allowed to elect their own leader in 2017.
But this summer China started to backpedal. It announced to Hong Kong that those elections could proceed only if the Chinese government selected all the candidates. To the people of Hong Kong, that meant they wouldnât have much control over their own government after all.
The students hit the streets, and thousands from Hong Kong rushed to join them in the days that followed. The Chinese government and the protesters have dug in their heels, and negotiations have failed. Now counter-protests from pro-China residents are complicating the situation.
To understand how the protests have escalated to this point, check out the video above, so as we watch the conflict develop, you can say, âNow I Get It.â"
