The Loving Marriage of Queen Anne & Prince George

As Anne and George settled down to married life together, it soon became apparent that they were remarkably compatible. With the sole exception of the Duchess of Marlborough, everyone agreed that they were an exceptionally devoted couple. Twenty-five years later it was said at George’s funeral, “Never did a happier pair come together.” Anne was described as “an extraordinarily tender and affectionate wife” while George “lived in all respects the happiest with his princess that was possible. Throughout their marriage they shared a bed, supported each other throughout each of the loss of every one of their nineteen children, and, when George fell ill, Anne nursed him until his dying day. “She never left him till he was dead, but continued kissing him the very moment the breath went out of his body.” After her beloved George’s death, Anne fell into deep, inconsolable sorrow “for…losing all that is dear to her, the only comfort in her life,” and mandated a two year mourning period for the entire court.  At her own death, she would be buried besides him in her family’s vault, which was in the same chapel that they had already buried all of their children in.
