Chrom breathes in the bright scent of fresh-cut flowers and just-baked bread. The hand he holds Emm’s with swings between them as they walk—his other is occupied with polishing off a deliciously tart crowberry bun.

Today is a good day. A storm blew through the night before, cooling the air and leaving a fiercely blue sky in its place. And earlier that morning, he overheard Father discussing a palace servant and her daughter who might be coming to stay with them soon.

Chrom has come to treasure these days when his father visits them at the villa…though not for the same reasons now that he did the first couple of times. Back then, he hoped that not having the council around would mean they could all do things together, like a real family. But even if Father spends his whole stay holed up with Mother in her bedroom or praying, it still means Emm gets to take a break from her care-taking duties.

This time, they were even allowed to go into town together. The market hums around them—voices punctuated by the toll of church bells. It's not crowded today, or ever, really; the village is tiny enough that every shop fits along a single street. But that doesn't mean there's not still plenty of things to discover.

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.
