Of course he would let her in. Even when she was accidentally trying to kill the star quarterback or tricking him into coming to some club in the city, he still let her in. Forgave her. Despite their differences, the decades between them and their outlook on, well, everything… Something still clicked. Something still stuck. Jessica wanted nothing more than to kill that something with own two bare hands before it got her first.
“Wh- No, no. I didn’t… It’s not that. I just-,” she paused, taking a moment to repress the urge to roll her eyes as she stepped inside, pushing her tangled hair back from her face. The small smile on her face at the sight of Nigel was mostly genuine. She may not have her humanity on but she wasn’t a complete monster. Anyway, back to the point. “Corey…”
Timing was everything. If she was weighed down by all that gross guilt and conscience for real, she’d definitely have to take a little more than minute. Cue the bambi eyes and she couldn’t help but launching herself at him, a tight and too quick hug with no explanation. Corey had seen the darker, manipulative side to the new her. He’d tried to bring her back and he’d given up. Or, at least, she though the had and then that stupid spell… All she had to do however was nail this one line perfect.
“I um, something- something happened. After- When I woke up today after-,” a shaky breath, a rogue tear and now for the grand finale-, “I love you.” And then for the added Jess he had come to know and-bleugh- love, “I mean, you know. I’m not like, this isn’t some horrific best friend and the boyfriend love triangle scenario, I swear. It’s just- Like, you know how. I just- But that’s the point. I- I feel…that.”
Once inside Corey shut the door behind her and leaned his back against it as if to stop her running back out. Being met with those eyes, those telltale eyes that had seen too much for their age- he was just afraid that if he moved she would leave when he really needed her to stay. Partly because he thought she might need him, partly because he thought she might not. When she lunged towards him he thought he was right, that she was going for the door, and for a moment he thought he had caught her, tightly wrapping his arms around her as if to stop her, before realizing it was him she was going for. He succumbed to the embrace which lasted all too short for him to fully appreciate. He wanted so much to hold her there but everything about this felt fragile, like if he made a wrong move this - whatever this was - would revert. He had been hurt by her before.
He stayed silent and motionless until she was done speaking. He didn’t want to say the wrong thing or scare her. This, after all, was everything he had wanted to hear from her for the past few months. He wanted to say he loved her equally, but it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t easy like with Ruby where he had wanted to scream it from the day one, when his body ached to reveal it.
He knew Jess knew he loved her, and just hoped she believed it. He put his mug down on the side-table, giving him a moment to collect himself before he searched Jess’ eyes for- for something, like evidence that the girl he used to have was brought back to the surface. All he found was his own heart, exposed, ready to give her another chance. She would always be deserving of another chance. “Does it feel okay?”
