The Banner Elk Book Exchange!
This week’s blog post is about the Book Exchange in the Historic Banner Elk School! {Photo from their website: Historic Banner Elk School} The task was to choose an organization in the surrounding area and evaluate how they are doing on social media.
I chose this organization first because it doesn’t have a lot of exposure. They do not have any social media platforms. The local newspapers will write about the Book Exchange in an article or two here and there. The locals or people visiting in town will post about the Book Exchange when they are visiting it but that is pretty much the only coverage they have on social media. They do not have a platform that someone directly manages.
One could argue that they do not have a social media presence simply because it is a volunteer and donation based organization. All of the books are donated, hence the nature of the organization, you can take a book as well as bring books and drop them off with no strings attached. This is a great play on the book exchange boxes that are popping up more frequently across America. This program is building up the community by getting people involved and contributing to it. The volunteers set up programs like book readings, local art displays, guest speakers, and various activities like hosting the local school’s special needs class to come and read books.
Since The Book Exchange does not have a reach on social media I created a short video that they could possibly use. I went to visit the Book Exchange and I wanted to convey just how cozy and nice the space really is for anyone to come and hang out. I wanted to convey to the audience that it has “homey” feel because they will treat you like family when you walk into the door.
Click ‘play’ to check out the video I created below:

I think that my video would benefit the Book Exchange because even if I were to onl share it amongst my peers it brings more people aware of it. The locals know of The Book Exchange because they are in town all year round and it is quite a small town so news travels fast. The students on the other hand would not know much about it let alone the hours because it is not presently appealing to them through platforms they can easily access.
Let me know what you think of the video thus far! I would like some feedback!

The Big Debate: Snapchat VS. Instagram
Today’s blog post is all about two of the big players among social media platforms that teens and young people are actively on. Those big players are Snapchat and Instagram. I was reading an article on teenager’s views of both Instagram Stories and Snapchat Stories. The article titled “Is Instagram Killing Snapchat? We Asked the Only People Who Really Matter: Teenagers”. Many of the teenagers said that they like Snapchat Stories over Instagram Stories. The teenagers questioned said that they have only posted on Instagram Stories a few times if even at all. Most of the teens feel a sense of loyalty to Snapchat since they were first to come out with instant video updates.
I would agree that most teenagers are updating their Snapchat Stories more consistently than they ever would on Instagram Stories. On the same note, the teens probably check Instagram more throughout the day if they do not have an active conversation happening on Snapchat. Even though teenagers are actively posting to Snapchat I would argue that this is not where they are seeing content more.
I know that I personally watch Instagram Stories more than I watch Snapchat Stories. Instagram Stories allows me to see people and hear people that are behind the accounts that they are posting from. For example, I follow a lot of photographers who only post their work and you rarely get to see them or hear them. I do not post on Instagram Stories often but like I stated prior, I do watch them. This would be a better outlet for brands to get more recognition and following. Instagram Stories does feature Live mode which lets you stream a live video. You can clearly see the relationship with Facebook and Instagram. Facebook is the parent company of Instagram and they are starting to relate the two in adding some of the same features to each.
As a marketing professional I would not get caught up solely on where the teens or the “young people” are. The teenagers are still watching Instagram Stories so they are still viewing your content whether they post themselves or not. Instagram has more marketing capability in that aspect. So don’t jump right onto Snapchat for all your marketing needs, do your research and then decide which one will work for you and your company.

Creating A Persona: Thrive Market
Lately I have been doing some research as the best places to get the best foods for a great deal and I have stumbled upon Thrive Market! I am in fact a college student and my school is in the middle of the mountains with a very limited grocery store selection. Thrive Market is an online grocery store that sells foods that are actually good for you. You put everything you want in a box and it ships to you, all for $60 a year. Their mission statement is simply this: “Thrive Market is a membership community that uses the power of direct buying to deliver the world’s best healthy food and natural products to our members at wholesale prices, and to sponsor free memberships for low-income American families.” So I was digging and found this article: “Thrive Market, an Online Grocer, Raises $111 Million”, pretty good for a company just under 3 years old.
Thrive has had to create a persona for their brand. Thrive uses their social media platforms, all six of them and apps in the major app stores, to keep customers engaged and shopping. Their social media sites are clever in the sense that they feature recipes using the ingredients that they sell on their website. Their Pinterest has 63,474 followers, their Instagram features 137,000, their Twitter has 25,900 followers and the list continues. They clearly have a following and can relate to their customers by retweeting them and repinning their pins on Pinterest. Thrive talks in easy to read english that makes them connect to their audiences. Thrive market is clearly doing something right. Thrive is a young company but they are giving back to the community which is a growing concern for today’s generations. This article by Forbes says “Often Millennials are incredibly self-assured about their career potential. Their confidence only becomes swayed when their employer fails to provide them with a vision.” It draws millennials in when you have a purpose and if they can easily find your brand on social media so they can see the reviews that others are leaving.
Thrive Market has a good thing going and I expect them to only grow in the coming years with more and more people becoming conscious of what they consume and put into their bodies.

The adults of Unfortunate Events are NOT stupid.
I’ve seen several people complain that the adults of A Series of Unfortunate Events are “too stupid” and that it damages the story. Please allow me to clarify something:
No adults in ASOUE is stupid. 100% of them are willfully ignorant, and it’s an important distinction.
Justice Strauss is too timid and needy to critically think about the red flags around her.
Mr. Poe cares more about his job than the people it affects.
Uncle Monty is so self-involved that he assumes that Stephano is after him.
Aunt Josephine is simply too afraid to consider the idea that terrible things may be nearby.
This is not a story of “Adults are dumb”. It is a story about how people can contribute to evil and cruelty simply by being passive or refusing to confront it.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” - Edmund Burke
That is what the series is about. It’s an important distinction. The Baudelaires do not suffer from random fools that happen to be near them. The Baudelaire Orphans are receiving the sum total of the failings of society crashing upon them.
