Do you ever sit awake at night, trying to sleep, only to hear something in the hallway?
It’s nothing big. Nothing that would make you think that someone has broken into the house. No… it’s just a small thing. Something that makes you listen. Maybe for a repeat of the sound. Maybe for an explanation.
But you sit and you listen, straining your ears until you hear the steady rush of blood through your body. Just the real, pounding sound of your own heartbeat against your eardrum. It becomes so loud, you’re listening more to your own living body than the sound you were seeking in the first place.
And for a moment, your own heartbeat sounds much more interesting? Like… why were we so curious about the noise in the hallway when we are a sound so different, so unique, only we can feel our own heart beating against our inner-ears. We are so alive, so constantly in-motion, be are always making sound. Even when we hold still. Even when we are listening. We make sound.
It’s almost alarming. Almost jarring, this “existing” business. The sounds that we make – laughter, breathing, crying – it’s all so different in comparison to the raw essence of being. The beat of a heart. The rush of blood through your body.
It’s nice and distracting. Especially from that noise in the hallway. But then again, existing can be much, much scarier than the thing in the hallway.
this filled me with a combination of terror and wonder

God please don’t use screamers or flashers. That’s how you hurt people. People with seizure disorders, PTSD, severe anxiety or phobias can be really hurt from these.
It’s childish, anyways.
