Painting pigeons!! i used a sort of cardboard like paper for this one, as well as decorating it with some shiny plastic glitter since pigeons are often urban birds who have to deal with a lot of our litter. I also had fun using pigments for this piece which don't really show up in the scan, so i added a video too!

One of my favorite paintings from last year! My cockatiel Tiger, who I've had since 2006. 💕

I got Tiger when I was 6 years old. I saw him at a local petstore and I begged my parents for him. He was all fluffed up at the front of his cage looking at me. When the employee asked me which one I want, I said "The fat one!!"

I was given sole responsibility for taking care of Tiger, at 6 years old. This wasn't my family's first bird, we had two other birds at the time that were both older than I was. But Tiger was 'mine'. I think I kept responsibility for him for maybe 2 years before he was moved in with our older cockatiel, after my parents decided that I could not take care of Tiger on my own.

I'm 26 now, Tiger is about 20. He still lives with my parents, along with their other cockatiel, Screech, who was a rescue. I have birds of my own, but I can't take Tiger in because my partner is asthmatic, and cockatiels are extremely dusty birds.

I have a lot of guilt built around Tiger and how I've failed him as a pet parent, but I also am cognizant that I was a child who was given an unfair responsibility, to care for such a complex, intelligent living creature. I made this piece about these feelings.

I wanted to use 'childish' mediums to reflect my age when I got Tiger. I used cheap acrylic paints, crayons, glitter glue and stickers.

one of my favorite parrots, the galah cockatoo!! there was a petstore i used to go to that had a resident galah named romeo and he was the SWEETEST guy ever. i really miss him.
