He used these rationalizations to successfully abuse minors for years, and that alone would have left me with no other fucking choice but to treat that whole community as a danger if not for the fact that he wasn’t even the first fucking time. An entire other person already wormed their way into my social circle long before that and had apparently been pulling the same goddamn mind games on his closer friends, from “I’m mentally ill, it’s not my fault” to “it’s all just pretend, just like scary movies!” I have heard all that shit before. As far as anybody can afford to care, “map” tumblr’s one and only contribution to this world is to finely craft a protective backdrop and a ready-made toolkit of psychological tricks any abuser can wield to their benefit, no fucking different from the holocaust deniers, white supremacists and nazis on here who swear they’re “non violent” and “just” like to display their “opinions.” That. Herbal Remedies for Cold and Flu Season

1. DIY Elderberry Thyme syrup – elderberry has been used for centuries in healing because it provides immune support (and has long been thought to banish negative energy). Can be taken both preventatively and to shorten the course of a cold. 

2. DIY Cough Drops – these cute cough drops are made with tea and honey to sooth an irritated throat. The original blogger chose hibiscus tea for the taste, but consider using one of the herbal teas she lists at the bottom for a more healing herbal remedy.

3. Lemon, Honey, and Ginger in a Jar – a traditional and internet favorite, this mixture turns into a jelly for when your throat needs serious soothing. Honey has been used for millennia to heal a variety ailments, just be sure to keep this away from infants. 

4. 30 Herbs for Cold and Flu Season – for those that like to have options, here is a long list of healing herbs with suggestions on how to use them during cold and flu season.

The firepit and herb spiral

I started building this area from scratch two years ago, but was never really happy with how it turned out the first time around. Like most things in the garden, it has been a constant work in progress.

In context

This circular patio is the structure around which my hügelkultured swale is built, which also hosts my meadow gardens.

Water drains off the patio and in to the swale, and the wildflower-covered crescent-shaped hill that now surrounds the patio blocks wind, so it’s much easier to keep a fire going here now.

Building

The bricks I used to make the thing are salvaged (I dug them out of the ground in another part of the yard, and got others from construction sites), and they are now laid over very environmentally-unfriendly layers of plastic bags. I figured using the bags as a weed barrier was no worse than putting them in a landfill, and I may as well take some responsibility for our own waste by using it on our property. They plastic layer is surprisingly permeable to water, owing to the gaps between individual bags.

All it takes to achieve an even plane between irregular cracked bricks is covering the area with sand, and sweeping the sand in between the cracks. Usually, I go over it with a mallet and a plank of wood and pound down sections of bricks, in order to even them out in between applications of sand.

Finishing up

The end result is a cosy little retreat that I think I am finally satisfied with. It’s surrounded by cherry trees, weigela, black lace elderberry, and a purple catalpa. The hügelkultur meadow gardens have seven different colours of butterfly bush in them on them as well, so eventually, this place will be a mess of fruit and flowers.

It took laying the bricks twice, planting trees around it, and building a long wind-breaking hill, but I can now enjoy a morning cup of coffee out here without agonising over how to finish it properly.

I wouldn’t even want to know. Really thinking about all the individual tasks that went into it, I’d guess about 80 hours, since I laid the bricks twice, I’m working alone, and I’m using pretty rudimentary equipment. Plus, I’ve had to hunt down, salvage, and haul all of the materials. Digging swales by hand is also time-consuming.

This isn’t counting things like “digging up rosebushes from a demolition site,” and “pollarding an apple tree,” even though those plants/materials are partially used here.

That time estimate includes things like planting seeds on the hills though, so it’s not “80 hours of backbreaking labour.” It’s also labour that’s spread out over more than a year now.

It’s littering. Please leave your offerings on something that’s not harmful to the environment. A sea shell, rock or even just on the beach. Please don’t use anything that could cause harm to the ocean or its inhabitants. Thank you!

Not to hijack, but all offerings in natural spaces should be planned to be safe for the environment it’s going into. This is why I’m partial to offerings of water or other consumable fluids–if it’s safe to go in my belly, it’s probably safe to pour over some plants.

Yes. Stop telling people to bury things in jars, particularly . Bury things in (unbleached) paper towels, or the insides of bell peppers. And don’t bury things that won’t degrade. There are so many ways to do witchcraft that doesn’t involve burying things that won’t decompose!! If you can, opt to recycle the item, or better yet, just change out all your spell ingredients for stuff that is eco-friendly and able to rot if buried. Srsly.

to add: making bowls or balls of ice to bury or to be carried awayby the sea. Use unbleached paper towels or banana peels(if it’s safe) to write your spell on, etc. There are many safe ways to do magic without littering.

You can also use cabbage leaves and cotton kitchen string in place of a jar, or write your spell on a piece of un-coated (like not metallic, etc.) paper and fold it into an origami creature because the paper will degrade

Love the idea of using vegetable casings.  Leafy greens as a wrap, peppers as a bowl or ‘jar’, apple or other peel as a ribbon to gently tie things together.  This could be extra meaningful for kitchen witches, gardening witches, etc.

How To Design An Herbal Toolkit For Your Craft

Recently I was discussing herbal magic with a friend who has begun dabbling in the craft and somewhere in the process of explaining my methodology and the herbs I like to work with I could tell I’d lost her. Her face went from one of open excitement to confusion and near dismay. I, of course, was concerned and had to find out what had caused the sudden change in her demeanor. 

“You just know about SO MANY herbs!” she said, “I don’t even know where to start, how do you even learn all of that?!”

At this point, I realized she had some serious misunderstandings about the way most witches go about learning when it comes to ingredients in their craft. After a quick survey of some of my subscribers, I found that she wasn’t the only one! The sheer quantity of knowledge available in this realm seems to be stopping a lot of witches from being able to confidently learn and grow in their herbal practice.

To help you overcome this hurdle, I’ve created this guide and a free worksheet to get you started on your journey into the world of herbal magic!

What is an Herbal Toolkit?

An herbal toolkit is a set of basic herbs that a witch knows well and uses regularly. Having this toolkit will allow you to build spells on the fly, knowing that you’ll have the ingredients on hand and without excessive research needing to be done every time you sit down to write a spell. The process of creating this toolkit will also help quickly boost your confidence and knowledge in this area. As many experienced witches will tell you, building that knowledge base is simply a matter of repeated use and growing familiarity over time. Nobody learns it all in a day! We all have to start small and build out from there.

Creating an Herbal Toolkit

Often when discussing herbs in the context of magic the focus is on individual herbs and what they’re used for. This approach is good for more experienced practitioners but with beginners, it’s often overwhelming. In this section, I’ll be focusing not on individual herbs but on how to go about building your own herbal toolkit and learning to work with your personal selection in the most effective way possible.

The first place to start is your kitchen cabinet.

Most people have a selection of herbs already available to them in their kitchen. To begin, all you need to do is make a list of what herbs you have. You’ll use this list to begin your personal herbal compendium.

Your herbal compendium can be organized in several ways, I prefer a two-part approach.

Pocket Notebook

A very small pocket notebook is invaluable as a quick reference guide. In order to fill this notebook, you’ll organize it not by herb but by application. For example, you might have a few pages dedicated to banishing herbs and another few pages for love spell herbs. For each herb I simply write down the name and any notes that it may require such as warnings or if the herb has more specific uses (as an example, under Love in my book I have Lemon Balm which is used to draw a new lover and Magnolia which is used to keep a lover faithful). You can add an index to the front of the book and use this to properly replace herbs in spells that you may be unable to obtain or for when you’re writing your own spells.

In your Grimoire

For those who are keeping their grimoire with dated entries, you’ll simply work notes about herbs into your regular grimoire keeping. For those who have sectioned off their grimoire, you’ll want to create a section just for your herbal notes. This is where you keep your detailed notes.

How to keep notes on the herbs you use:

You may not need or want to write down every aspect of a particular herbs uses but there are a few things that you should definitely research and write down.

The name of the herb as well as any folk names it may have

What part(s) of the herb is used (varying parts of a plant can have hugely different uses!)

Whether or not the plant (and its individual parts) is edible

Any medications the herb might interact with

Whether or not the herb can be safely burned

The metaphysical uses of the plant

On top of this basic info, you should always write a small entry about your personal impressions of the plant after working with it a bit. You may find that certain herbs don’t work for you (basil and I do not get along magically!) or that you feel the plant has different or extra metaphysical properties.

These personal impressions are FAR more important to your work with an herb than some cut and paste list of metaphysical properties! Taking note of these impressions allows you to build a relationship with the plant and its energy.

How your own energy interacts with an herb (or any other tool to be honest) has a huge impact on how that plant will affect your magic.

For example, cedar is commonly thought to be excellent for cleansing. If I use cedar for cleansing, however, my house ends up full of errant spirits! For me, cedar is used to feed the spirits and demons that I work with, it may be mildly cleansing but more than anything it’s like setting up a buffet table and opening my door to whoever walks by!

Here are some kitchen cabinet herbs that you may already have and their common magical uses:

• Basil - Protection, Banishing, Money drawing

• Dill - Protection, Love, Luck

• Rosemary - Protection, Cleansing

• Garlic - Banishing, Warding off bad weather, Spell Breaking

• Black Pepper - Banishing

• Bay Leaves - Money drawing

• Vanilla - Love

• Cinnamon - Luck, Protection

perhaps it’s a bit too warm for coffee potions, or hot chocolate magic, or even tea spells, but you still want to work a little magic into your day. infused waters! here’s just a couple of suggestions with fruit and even herbs, and their correspondences.

for all recipes, chop, cube, or slice all fresh ingredients. let them sit in a bottle of cool water for a few hours. the longer it waits, the more flavor infuses. afterwards, you can eat the fruit or infuse it again!

Adult witches can also use alcohol instead of water and make aquavit. Aquavit made with fresh strawberries and a little sugar is undeniably magical. The host of a full moon party I was at once made seven different kinds of aquavit just for the occasion. Was a wonderful night.

Fall butternut squash soup

Ingredients

6 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons butter 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 small onion, chopped 2 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 medium butternut squash (you’ll find out what to do with this in the recipe) 32 oz container of stock or broth Salt and pepper to taste

Herbs and spices Rosemary Thyme Garlic Nutmeg Allspice Herbs de provence

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut the bulb off the butternut squash. Cut it in half and scoop out the guts and seeds. Place on a baking sheet and add the six tablespoons of butter to the halfves. Add a little bit of the all spice, nutmeg, or even pumpkin pie spice. Put in the oven and let bake until the squash is soft and pulls away from the skin

2. With the stem of the squash, peel the skin and chop into half inch cubes. Make them smaller for a faster cooking time.

3. In a large pot, add the 2 tablespoons butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil to heat up over medium flame. Add the onions, rosemary, herbs de provence, garlic, and what ever savory herbs you like! Sauté on medium until soft and flavorful.

4. Add the squash and potatoes to the pot and let them sauté for about 3 minites, just enough to get well coated in the yummy onion stuff.

5. Add the stock or broth and raise the heat to high. Let boil until potatoes and squash is soft.

6. Scoop the squash from the bulbs you baked and add it to the soup. Take either an immersion blender or just a normal blender and blend soup to desired consitincy.

7. Serve warm with sour cream or what ever you want on top!

This recipe is perfect for fall. Make it into a spell by carving sigils or runes into the bulbs before you bake them. Make a chant to say whole stirring the soup. You could serve this next Mabon or during Samhain. You should always stir a soup clockwise to bring good into your soup! Since butternut squash is so cheap, this is a hearty recipe for those on a budget.

Lookin for witchy blogs to follow that are not vegetarian or vegan. I have some medical/psychological reasons why neither are an option for me and I just want others at a similar place I am with food. it seems like witchy people are overwhelmingly vegan and I feel a little alone in this.
