Not me having brainrot about the show but yeah I think Lisa is being set up to be the final antagonist of the story. (Not Grace, lmao)
Lisa is being setup to be someone who had been in the human world far longer than Lara's overall experience combined (Prince's time + Mari's time) but still harbors the same hatred / prejudice as if nothing changed with her interactions. Lisa's will is unbendable, and this I think I will be important since she's being setup as a parallel / narrative successor of Grace. I think the story is really being developed as a story between sisters (alongside the romance). Either we get a dramatic romantic revelation at the end, some dilemma Lara has to go through involving Mari and Lisa, or Mari and Lara develop before the final confrontation with Lisa. I think the ending might involve Lara having to save Lisa from the consequences of her own actions (say, if she has some power corrupting her). Because again, in relation to Grace, if it would be true that she is the girls' maternal aunt (therefore, the sister of Lara's mother), and the mother being a "special, radiant princess", and then Grace now being shown and called a sea witch -- a creature of darkness, then the theme of light/darkness is just running around the whole story.

Grace and Lisa having a certain kind of relationship seems to hone this in, even. Lisa says in Episode 2 (to 10-year old Lara), "And they say that one of us princesses might possess that same power [their mother's power]." But that then begs the question, "Only light? Nobody's capable of equally great darkness?"
A lot of it is about duality and opposition. Even with the whole church / religion / Christian-theming going on, it has a lot to do with good / evil or temperance / temptation. Red/blue, human/merfolk, land/ocean, romance/family, imposition/questioning, right-hand path/left-hand path. Something even like the merfolk believing themselves to be creatures of light, and humans are vile (so of darkness, then). The merfolk believe themselves a separate species, perfect, good, and humans are believed to be evil / bad. And then the show flips this over, showing both the good and bad sides of both races.
And again, in terms of power, at least in a lot of romance stories, the strongest level of love comes out during the worst of conflict, which means the radiant light can only be born under great duress. But in a similar vein, love can also be a bad thing -- one that warps into obsession and delusion, or gives the will to do anything for the sake of another person (think, MadoHomu vibes). I feel like Lisa is being developed to represent love when it becomes warped -- and this will make her do things that would be bad for everyone later on.
I think they will develop Mari/Lara regardless (the romance side), and this will be Lara's true love -- BUT, since the show likes the duality perspective, I think she can only harness the full power of her radiance if, and only if, she realizes that what she feels for her family is also true love. The meaning of true love -- to love someone despite their shortcomings, and even in their worst forms, and to still reach out a hand to them in spite of all the darkness (or whatever deeper meaning that can be assigned to it). Then the two opposing concepts (choosing between her family or her romantic interest) become a whole, and Lara is able to become the radiant princess she's meant to be.
One might even argue that their mother, the radiant princess that gave the palace its light -- was able to find her true love's definition as her love for the merfolk, her family, and not just romance. Interestingly, the colors of the light inside of Lara (and presumably her mom) is of the color white with red, blue and green edges. With additive colors (such that of light), white is the resulting color of the combination of all colors, with the primaries being red, blue and green. I think this is meant to say that Lara is learning the many nuances of love and living, which would tie in strongly to the concept of Agape -- which is pretty much the highest form of love in Christian terms.
Lmao, I am convinced by the day that Sayonara Lara also takes huge inspiration from Frozen. I'm really curious to see where they're taking all these concepts.

Been watching the show lately, very much because of @sheihne's convincing little post of it (that one's for you, Nuts and Dolts nation)
Sitting through the four episodes and it's already putting up a lot of plot questions on what happened in the past.
Anyway, I'm just here to yap about the OP because it easily gives us a clue on what's happening / what probably happened. The first episode was a quick ride on the original tale of The Little Mermaid and was blazing through 10 characters within 20-ish minutes so it's a little vertigo-inducing. And just the same, that soft, wistful OP is overloaded with characters, too. LMAO.
I just kinda got intrigued when the mother was revealed in the second episode, because it then became clear that the two blue mermaids spinning at the latter half of the OP are Grace and Lara's mother.
(Keeping this under Read More because this one turned out pretty long LMAO!!)
This was confusing to me at first since I was basing my belief that Rowan and Grace were the siblings --- comparing them to the 2023 live-action version of The Little Mermaid (Triton and Ursula being siblings). But with Grace introducing herself to be Lara's aunt in Episode 1, there's no reason for her to lie about their familial relation anyway, so if the sibling is not Rowan, then it's most likely Lara's mother, given they also have that cute childhood shot:
In the entire sequence, it's also made clear that Grace and Lara's mother were close, at the same time, Lara's mom was with Rowan, and Grace appears to have been with a human.
After the second or third ep, it intrigued me a lot on why Grace seems to know a lot more about humans as if it was firsthand experience. Well, turns out Grace does have experience! So when she cuts Lara's tongue before sending her to the surface the first time, what was the intention behind it? Was she protecting Lara in some way? She says Rowan was the one who misspoke that time on the surface and got ostracized (Episode 1). In what way? Why? Or is taking Lara's voice simply part of whatever grand plan she has? What's with her heavy investment on her youngest niece and whatever special light that is (that her own sister -- Lara's mother, had)? Grace even says she knows Rowan wants Lara's mother to be resurrected, and I am guessing from the way she spoke about it, that she wants it to happen, too.
(Also I mean, just look at what follows the sequence of Grace and Lara's mom's childhood shots -- a sense of wistfulness / fondness / nostalgia, which makes me wonder what Grace feels whenever she sees Lara -- who seems to be a spitting image of her mom, just with red hair)
My only guess about what happened in Grace, Rowan and Lara's mom's past, based on my limited knowledge and only these few episodes is that at some point, Grace being on the surface must have made Lara's mother curious, too. Maybe she was tagging along to see what it's like. Maybe Rowan was also being dragged around, too, eventually coming up to the surface at some point, which is why Grace tells Lara of Rowan having "misspoken" before, which must have set off a chain of events that turned humans (from that specific surface kingdom) and merpeople against each other. Maybe there wasn't an animosity to begin with. Maybe this was developed some time ago, who knows?
But it's also interesting if the blonde guy with Grace in the opening is related to Lara's prince in the beginning. Maybe Grace and the blonde guy were torn apart by their own societies for their differences, or the blonde guy intentionally left her behind (so presuming, they had no children). Blonde guy married a different human, making Grace fail on her own quest to find true love (which is pretty much the story of the original tale??) and then had Lara's prince (the guy that looks like Luca) as his son. So that makes some kind of generational thing -- two mermaids from the same family falling in love with humans from the same lineage. Something yadda yadda about fated to meet but can never be together, or whatever, maybe?
With the current four episodes and the prominence of family relations in the OP, I'd say Sayonara Lara would likely lean on family drama, but it would also be interesting if with the romance side, they touch on LGBT issues as well (even a little) seeing how there seems to be a comphet undertone going on. But also, yeah, I think there are also moments they're cluing in that there's a lot of familial love involved in order to find Lara's "true love", whatever this means for the show -- and now this is just giving me the vibes of Disney's Frozen where Anna was so tunneled in finding true love (which, to her thought, is romantic love from Hans) to cure her frozen heart and it all turned out to be familial love (protecting Elsa) in the end.
Also the focus of the OP is even a little less on Mari/Lara and more on how Lara literally gives light to the people around her. Sayonara Lara might likely develop the romance side and the family/friendship side at the same time, equal in some way, and somewhat similar to Frozen's narrative progression (and then I just remembered now that Hans Christian Andersen also wrote the original tale that Frozen was based on lol).
I mean just look at the sequence of the OP shots alternating between love and family/frienship:
Though with all this, at this time, my interest is really on Grace's side (man, I would not have predicted this about myself /s) of the story and how she even got those witchy powers in the first place. Right now, my reading of her character is more on, "taking on dark magic in hopes of reversing a tragedy" vibes, given this merwoman sort of represents the Biblical serpent what with all her snakes and giving Lara the fruit (the potion) of the Tree of Knowledge lol (and on the side of Biblical theming, like, Lucifer = lightbringer, so what the heck does that mean here??). Whether she wants Lara's mom's resurrection, or her lover's resurrection (?? who knows??) or both, or whatever, I'm pretty excited to see where this story is going.
I have some feeling the more dramatic/emotional side of the original tale's plot might play out on Mari and Lara instead, and then the whole kiddie argument between Lisa and Luna fighting over whether Lara would be a red or a blue mermaid in the first episode is all foreshadowing on the dilemma and hard choices she has to make -- at least when it comes to her choice of living as a human or living as a mermaid. Hell yeah, let's go Sayorara!!
