“Well, now it’s much more common so there are plenty of vegan options and substitutes. My mom used to make green bean casserole when we were kids. Now it is a side dish to a vegan holiday roast she gets at Whole Foods. They always encouraged us to be vegan, but they wanted us to make our own decisions. I’m like 60% vegan. I don’t worry about it when I’m out eating, or at a friends, or traveling. Almost all my cooking at home is vegan though, and I will often take vegan, or vegetarian choices when offered.”

They think he’s ‘carbo-loading.’ When they see a thin girl with a box of fattening things, the first thought is ‘Oh, she’s going to get fat.’ We make excuses for men without even thinking about it, it’s how we’ve been programmed. So – yes, you have to buy them. And then we’ll pretend like you’re my doting boyfriend, handing his sweet thing a box of sweet things.”

❝ i don’t know what’s more frightening to me, that you just gave me a lecture on societal chauvinism when i’m already on my way to the counter or that you’ve just stereotyped me just like how people stereotype thin girls and then essentially referred to yourself as sweet thing. ❞ he looks amused, shaking his head before paying at the counter with an appreciative smile at the cashier. ❝ how about we not pretend. i’m just a well-wishing bartender whose club you go to, and because it’s festive season, ❞ he hands her the box with a polite head-tip forward. ❝ have a good christmas. ❞
