a smile graced amaya’s lips at the younger girl’s explanation and question. “ so safe to assume that you haven’t quite decided your major yet? it’s fine, i’m sure you have plenty of time. your observation is quite astute --- i do play the cello. i’m actually in the new york philharmonic. i’m supposed to be guest lecturer at the music school today. ”

wrinkling her nose in distaste, amaya released a mildly disgruntled sound from the back of her throat. “ why do you need to ruin my fantasies like that? what is your damage? and that sounds awful. you don’t need to stay you know, we can always rain check. ”

as it turned out, seth did look exactly like he did in his pictures ;; green eyes, dirty blonde hair and that jawline that was made for naughtier purposes. in fact the only thought running through her head at the moment was simply how glad she was that she’d shaved. and that she’d chosen to wear matching lingerie beneath her sweater dress. the other date had been a disaster but this seemed far more promising. as she entered his place, smiling to herself when he took her coat (still playing the chivalrous gentleman) a small sense of unease began to curl in her stomach. flirting over messages was one thing, but amaya always felt terribly awkward at the beginning of hook ups. the logistics of going from small talk to making out was a difficult bit of social maneuvering she was never able to do with any sort of grace. “ so... ” she began, stepping across the floor and turning to face seth, a little unsure of what to do with herself. “ that jealous lover act? very impressive. ”

“Well, you got ‘poor college student’ right, but really, sorry about that.” Sawyer rattled off, sheepishly gathering her books. “I didn’t see you there past, you know, all this.” She gestured to her tall stack of books. 

“ yikes. that’s a lot. what are you studying? ” considering that amaya avoided the gym if she could, her arms were beginning to burn from the weight of her cello. gently, she set it down, leaning it against her body. “ i stopped using physical textbooks pretty much as soon as possible. e-books all the way. ” ironic, considering her music was always on paper.

seth: whoops.  seth: not to say you aren’t beautiful, the park just is distracting…. seth: and that sounds horrible. i would offer to rescue you but i think that might seem a bit much this early in a conversation. 

amaya: ugh are you one of those nature obsessed ‘let’s go camping’ types? amaya: bc i’m not about that life. amaya: i don’t know...i feel like i’ll be approaching a line of desperation real soon. but we’ll see. maybe i’ll fake an emergency.

it was her giant cello case that caused the bump more than anything else. “ oh my god, i’m sorry. you’d think i’d be better at carrying this around after literally decades of playing but nope. here i am attacking poor college students. ”
