Anytime I read a Harry Potter fanfic where someone is described as wearing really expensive dragon-hide boots as a symbol of wealth, all I can really think of (despite my best efforts) are these:

i truly don’t think you and many others are seeing the issue here. we aren’t talking about whether or not will is going to try and kill hannibal again in cuba once they recover. this crosses lines that have no REASON to be crossed. writing rape because you want to is horrendous, especially when you consider that fanfiction acts partially as fan service and entertainment. mads himself stated hannibal is not the typical psychopath. bryan, as you said, did not want explicit rape and assault in this show. to go on and say it’s completely okay for a fan to write about hannibal lecter raping someone all because you don’t want an author’s feelings to get hurt over the matter of censorship……priorities, dude. i get, don’t restrict creativity, it’s harmful, etc. i think we can make an exception in this case, and the world would go on just fine. fans like hannibal’s character because he’s vile enough to dismember a man and find beauty in it, but compassionate enough to hunt down the exact kind of person writers are making him in their stories for again NO REASON. at some point, it becomes an OC, not even the canon character. that ALONE should bother you, given the amount of time, love, and sheer creativity that went into creating this character, and this show. you give me one good and logical reason why someone would want to write someone as a rapist when they’re canonically not one. out of ALL the characters in the show that WOULD be likely to rape someone, you don’t find it insulting that writers use hannibal?

AO3 was specifically created as a platform for anybody to write and share whatever they would like. That means different interpretations of characters - or completely off-the-wall shit that makes no sense compared to the canon work. It doesn't matter. There are no rules. Their version of Hannibal is just as valid as yours.

Did Hannibal ask for consent before he ate people? Did he ask for Will's consent before he let him wander around for weeks with encephalitis just to see what would happen? Setting aside the show and looking at the canon character as a whole, did he ask for consent before he kidnapped Clarice and undressed her while she was unconscious?

I think it's bold for you to claim that Hannibal would never ever rape someone simply because he's occasionally a tiny bit nice to Will. He treats other human beings more like chess pieces to be manipulated than equals. Personally I don't think he'd shy away from any crime against a person if it meant furthering his own goals - or if it simply struck his fancy that day.

You don't speak for all fans of Hannibal. Some of us like him because he's evil and cruel, straight up.

PSA: if you are not interested in reading about ‘fandom drama’, please skip this post. You are responsible for your internet experience. If, however, you care about exposing bullies and POS in fandom spaces (specifically the tomione fandom in this case), carry on.

I’m posting a document here that was recently shared with me. It’s about Greyana (if you don’t already know who this is, you’re not missing out, and I encourage you to ignore this post). Specifically, it’s about what a horrible person Greyana is in the fandom. I did not write it. I didn’t know about most of this until it was shared with me, including the parts where she attacked me specifically. I won’t go into all the details of what’s in this, but the short version is: Greyana has a history of harassing other writers, using alt accounts across multiple platforms to promote her work, employing bots to promote her work, using generative AI to write as much as she has in the first place (which means she has stolen from other writers to do so), and more. There is a reason she exists (as herself, anyway) only on specific platforms. Tumblr users didn’t put up with her shit and called her out, so she left. I therefore know I’m sort of speaking to the choir here, but I wanted to put this document out there. I probably should have shared it sooner, I just really didn’t want to get involved because she doesn’t deserve my attention. Now, however, I am, and I’m giving it to her… because this is about more than that.

I don’t like bullies. I don’t like malicious hypocrites, I don’t like liars, I don't like thieves, I don’t like people in fandom spaces tearing others down when we should be building each up and supporting each other, and I don’t like when it is painfully obvious that someone only cares about stats, about being ‘the best’ and about monetizing fanfiction in whatever way they can get away with (such as via TikTok). This isn’t about ‘fandom drama’ at this point. It’s about setting the precedent that this kind of deplorable behavior isn’t acceptable anywhere; that being abusive, deceptive, and malicious because ‘it’s only fanfiction’ does not make it tolerable.

The point in sharing this is simply to let people know. I’m not asking or telling anyone to do anything specific, although I encourage you strongly to not support her and people like her. These are the types of people who ruin fandom spaces. Who make other writers stop writing and feel good about themselves when they succeed in doing so. Actually, here’s something I’ll ask: if you like Voldemort/Hermione as a pairing and have considered writing it, now would be a great time! Because she has recently started spamming her volmione fic as though it is the only one worth reading, as though there simply aren’t any good ones out there (this is going to shock you, but there are), slamming those other fics, etc.

To say things in Voldemort's army was perfect would be a lie. Between the torture of his followers and the death that always seemed to surround him, Jerry could honestly say that he regretted being a death eater.

Then again, it wasn't like he was like the others, constantly fighting, on the wrong side of the dark lords wand. No, jerry got both lucky and unlucky.

He was in finance.

Jerry pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration as he looked down at the expense reports before him. He seriously couldn't understand the decisions being made.

There was no reason that they should be ordering so many silk robes for all the death eater. Sure, the masks he could see, Voldemort wanted everyone looking the same, but the robes? Cotton would be a more affordable choice a fact that he had mentioned numerous times to deaf ears.

Then there were the miscellaneous expenses, like the brooms that they used to try to capture potter last year or the caring and Maintenace of the threstrals they had and didn't even use.

To say jerry was on his last nerve was an understatement.

Holding his face in his hands he closed his eyes, trying to gather is composure Infront of Lucius Malfoy.

"Explain why we need to have funds for a picnic again" he stated calmly, watching as Lucius shrugged his shoulders.

"To help with morale apparently" he responded "It was Pettigrew's Idea, and honestly if it means we get one day without his horrid cooking, id be alright with that"

"I hate my life" Jerry said to no one in particular, banging his head on his desk, before lying his cheek down on the cool wood and looking at the expense report. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed an expense that shouldn't be there. "The dark lord isn't paying for your peacocks Malfoy!" he shouted after the man. If he heard he made no indication.

After much deliberation and enduring a couple crucios, Jerry had managed to convince the Dark Lord that silk robes would only be reserved for the inner circle…and even then only for those that could maintain it.

“Fenrir has gone through 3 sets of robes this month! He can buy his own cotton robes! No, he can get the poly-cotton! It’s cheaper and we can source it in bulk.” Jerry was pretty proud of that find, there was a guy in Knockturn alley who sold them ones that fell off the back of a broom.

“I thought we all had to pay for replacement robes?” Stan Shunpike grimaced. “I mean, I only got one set of cotton robes in my Death Eater orientation pack.”

“The Dark Lord wants everyone to maintain a coherent look. It’s important for the *brand*. But yes, only the first set of robes are free—then it’s a 10 gallon fee per replacement.”

“That highway robbery! Last I remember work robes were under 5 gallons!”

Jerry shrugged. It wasn’t worth explaining revenue from members was already down. Redirecting money from the family accounts was all well and good when their members were young and not lords. But now, with a lot of their membership in jail or middle aged, suddenly everyone cared much more about spending their family money.

“Well inflation happened.” Jerry replied. It wasn’t not true, the civil unrest had been causing supply chain issues. Now if only he could figure out where that Fletcher fellow got those cheap robes from…

If we take a break for a moment from the funny meme or self-aware kink indulgence understanding of the 'bimbo', and instead examine it as a sort of sexist fantasy - that is, literally a fantasy of ideal womanhood as imagined by a sexist - then we can come to understand that the 'himbo' is not the masculine counterpart. There is discourse to mine out of the idea that the himbo represents a sexist fantasy of ideal manhood, but I think that the himbo actually represents a sort of halfway step between the bimbo and her true counterpart.

The bimbo embodies sexist 'ideals' of womanhood, taken to an extreme and bent to the desires of the sexist (presumed straight, male) imagination. She is:

1) physically attractive in sexual terms, to an extreme - both a pleasure to possess and a status symbol to display to others

2) always horny (thus, always sexually available)

3) unintelligent in the traditional sense - not good at organization, STEM fields, academic learning, etc. this keeps her...

4) nonthreatening - she won't outshine a man in any domain of (the sexist ideas of) male competence, and

5) dependent - in need of a big strong smart man to provide for her, reassuring said man's sense of self-worth

All of these line up with traditional sexist ideas of womanhood - where the bimbo has flaws, they're not feminine flaws, and she still possesses feminine strengths (according to the sexist mindset).

So, the male counterpart of the bimbo should embody sexist ideals of manhood, taken to an extreme and bent to the desires of the sexist imagination. If we compare to the bimbo's features listed above, then:

1) physical attractiveness is desirable for men but not a key feature - a man can be manly while being ugly in a way a woman cannot be womanly if she is ugly.

2) horniness is not seen as desirable for men - it is expected and excused by sexists, but it's considered threatening to those who are its targets and a lot of sexism towards men is based in this assumed threat.

3) traditional intelligence is considered manly, but emotional intelligence isn't - in fact, it's seen as unmanly.

4) being threatening is harder to extract from manliness, as is...

5) being dependent, but it is possible, even required - men are just expected to be non-threatening and dependent in a different way.

Remembering that we're looking for a sexist ideal rather than a sexual ideal, we need to identify how sexism towards men works. Men are not sexually objectified under traditional sexism, but they are still objectified. This objectification is based on utility - an objectified man is reduced to a tool. He is wanted for what he can do and how well he does it, not in himself. His personhood is reduced to what makes him useful and controllable, and when he is not being of use he is unseen. He does not feel pain, he does not feel emotions that make him less of a perfect undemanding worker or soldier, he is permitted to suffer or rage or weep only for the things he serves and never for himself.

The male counterpart of a bimbo would be:

1) physically obviously useful - big and strong and tough, to an extreme, convenient for whoever he serves and an implicit threat to their enemies

2) seldom horny (thus never sexually threatening)

3) emotionally unintelligent - lacking the ability to understand or express the feelings of others or even his own (if he even has them) - in order to help make him:

4) unthreatening, in the sense of being easily controllable and socially inferior, and

5) dependent - in need of an inspiring leader, abstract ideals or a sole source of comfort to fulfill his emotional needs, further securing his loyalty and obedience.

I put it to you, then:

Anon, ten years ago gay people couldn't get married in large parts of the US. AIDS was an almost certain death sentence when I was in high school. I was looking at job boards the other day and found a part time gas station job that had health insurance as a benefit, which NEVER would have happened 15 years ago. When I was a kid, hitting your child was extremely normalized in the US and my parents were the weird ones for not doing it. There is a vaccine for chicken pox. I didn't meet anyone who had transitioned until my 20s because it was so uncommon to transition in the aughts, and now there are some states that protect your right to have gender affirming care provided by your health insurance. It's not all states, but it's better than the number of states that had it in 2010, which was zero. THERE ARE TENANTS UNIONS NOW. WE HAVE A VACCINE AGAINST CERVICAL CANCER.

And all of that has been the work of a lot of individuals and organizations and research teams and activists.

Something that struck me the other night as truly incredible—I grew up during the height of the AIDS crisis in the ’80s and ’90s. I remember around 1990 or so was when people really started working to bring HIV/AIDS and the search for a cure into public view and begin the really, really long work of destigmatizing it, even a little bit. The homophobic terror people had of even being NEAR someone who had the so-called “gay disease,” I really cannot understate this. A diagnosis was considered an absolute death sentence.

The other night I was watching whatever random thing on YouTube, and I got yet more of the constant ads that irritate the fuck out of me. But this one was for an HIV maintenance medication. It was a long ad, probably 60 seconds, and so help me, I watched the whole thing. It talked about this drug (forgive me, I can’t remember the name) that would let you live a happy and fulfilling life (while mentioning that of course safe sex is important). And it showed queer couples, straight couples (to break the stereotype), people who looked single and happy, different races and genders and presentations and body sizes, going out to lunch or cuddling on a couch or going out for a date, whatever it was the scene was implying. Bright colors, soothing optimistic music and voiceover, physical affection including kissing—you couldn’t even tell who among the actor couples was or wasn’t portraying an HIV patient. It blew my fucking mind to just see a whole minute of this between ads for Pizza Hut and car insurance. I’m not even sure anyone would have shown a gay couple kissing, full stop, on TV in 1990. And this ad was just out here like, if you’ve contracted this illness, there’s help for it, and you can live a good happy life among your loved ones. But also, you deserve to have that happiness, out in the open, and there will be people who love you, unafraid. Even if, and especially if, you’re gay. This is a world where this is possible. Like I’m honestly tearing up right now. I could not have imagined this in 1990. I could not.

How long would Death Note be if Light was actually a completely law-abiding, if vaguely narcissistic, citizen during the kira murders who just so happened to tick off L's "he's a serial killer" radar?

I mean, that's the thing, he wouldn't tick off L's radar

Why Did L Suspect Light Anyway

L does single-mindedly pursue the theory of "Light Yagami is Kira" to an utterly insane degree, even accepting for things like "he conveniently got amnesia for no reason" and "even though I put cameras in every corner of his house I didn't catch him" and "even though I handcuffed him literally to my side I couldn't catch him"

It is nuts.

However, I will give L credit, he didn't pick Light out of a hat.

L's initial theory was simply that Kira was in Japan and taking a stab in the dark probably the Kanto region. Light confirmed this for him due to an egotistical hissy fit with L having to put in very little effort.

This brought L to focus on Tokyo.

L further figures out fairly early on that Light has a student's schedule, not a working adult's in Japan, and this is because Light at the time didn't realize he could control the exact time at which a person dies and by the time Light changes his method it's already too late.

Now, what happened then is that Light intentionally tipped his hand. After Lind L. Taylor, Light took L's existence extremely personally and nursed quite the grudge and the vendetta. To "win" as Kira, to prove he's a god to himself and the populace, he must personally kill L. As a result, Light does many things that put him in danger/do nothing to help him as Kira just to have his chance at L.

The big one is that he starts using information only known to the Japanese police force. He intentionally does this so that L focuses enough on Tokyo and the police there that Light can get a firmer grasp on him, what Light didn't account for was that L would immediately narrow in on him and him alone or the lengths he'd go to in order to investigate Light as a suspect.

But thanks to Light, L did know that whoever was doing this had access to police information not available to the public. Now, Light was likely hoping L would assume it was a cop, but L expanded his search to the police and their family members, presuming that family members may have access to these networks due to insecure home practices and such (which Light does).

Now, L never explains canonically why he's so certain Light is Kira, but if I'm putting myself in his shoes I can take a wager as to why Light made him go "ding ding ding".

L's looking for the type of person who would become Kira. He already knows this person is Japanese, likely a student in a rigidly structured school day (so not in university), but someone with good enough English to have followed the Lind L. Taylor broadcast, someone savvy with the internet so as to kill international criminals.

What he also knows is that Kira is obsessive, manic, single-minded, and unquestioning of his beliefs. Kira is also someone with an absurd amount of faith in law enforcement and the justice system (Light... doesn't spend too long questioning whether or not the people he sentences to death are guilty of the crimes they were sentenced for/the life circumstances which might lead to someone committing a heinous crime and whether or not that matters) which makes sense for a workaholic policeman's son in homicide whose son idolizes him.

Not to mention that, aside from his hatred of L, Kira is extremely respectful of the police in general. He never goes after the Japanese police the way he does L (only the FBI agents tailing him) and it's clear that his great rivalry is with L, not the Japanese police, interpol, or any kind of cops.

So, we're looking at someone who really respects the law... without understanding what the law even is, why it exists, or why "no, Light, murdering thousands of people does not magically make you exempt".

Adults typically don't act like Light does. Even after the six-year time skip, Light's still obsessive but he has changed greatly from the boy he was. And Mikami, an adult who is inspired by him and kills in the same way is... a very different kind of person ultimately driven by a victim mentality.

My point is, it would make sense for L to suspect a teenager rather than an independent adult. The schedule lines up, the personality lines up, and while this is very likely a highly precocious individual (and someone who knows he's very clever) they still feel young.

So, L narrows it down to a set of families and look what we have: Light Yagami, brilliant young man who scores first in the country on every exam he ever takes, talented in athletics at a national level, has succeeded at everything in his life and is the pride and joy of his family, utterly adores his police chief father and has repeatedly shown interest in following his career path and even taken steps towards doing so as a high school student.

And L says "bingo".

But Back to Your Question

Putting aside whether or not anyone else would ever go as ham killing the types of people Light did for no particular reason (Misa, for example, would probably have only gone after her parent's killer. Mikami would have gone after his childhood tormentors/his mother. Higuchi went after corporate rivals) there's also whether they'd have that police information from Japan (probably not likely), and if they'd act the way that Light did.

Basically, while it is a nice thought... I don't think L would suspect Light in these circumstances as he'd ultimately be dealing with a very different person who acts in very different ways.

Light would never tip off his radar.
