Hey, I'm Nick Clark. Welcome to my blog, I guess. You can ask things, but I dunno if you'll get an answer. Really depends what you ask, I suppose. If you're gonna leave H, make sure you leave the good shit. Stick around as long as you want, I guess. There are a few rules and guidelines under the cut to follow, though. Don't look at me, I didn't make them. The guy that gave me this place did. He's not so bad, so don't give him shit, okay? He's just trying to keep things running smoothly for all of us.

Enjolras hadn't meant to wander, exactly, but he thought it was important, also, to explore the new-found temporary residence he and Nick had found in the safety of a country club up in the Arizona mountains. It was a far cry from the luxury his father had forced him to indulge in at home, but that didn't matter. The further east they got, the closer he got to his friends and that was all that mattered to him. Here, with other survivors, they had a chance against any rogue walkers that could come up, so it was decided that they would stay for a while to rest.

The country club, though not as large as places he had seen, seemed huge and endless, it's halls and rooms meant for entertainment empty, still, and unsettling, but it was still important to know more about where they were. He managed to find a small cabinet with some stored away snacks and gathered them into his bag before heading back to where he and Nick had been hunkering down in their own little building.

But no one was there. Enjolras rolled his eyes, dropping the food in the room before turning to go and look for his "ally".

Nick, having grown up in Los Angeles, was used to a wide range of wealth, from skid row and the drug dens, to Beverly Hills. Not that he'd really spent time in Beverly Hills. But he'd seen how fancy those neighborhoods were. He was from El Sereno, which was a good neighborhood, but he wouldn't have considered his family rich. They had money, but nowhere near what other families in the area had. The country club, he felt, was probably a little bit wealthier than he was used to. He was used to the cabin in the mountains that they went to every summer. In truth, he was surprised they hadn't made plans to flee there.

He'd sat around the room for a little while, waiting for his companion to return, but got bored of waiting rather quickly. He set out to explore their building on his own, and had found the pool. There was a small abandoned shop full of gear for the on-site activities. He stole a pair of swim trunks and trudged out to the pool to relax. Anything to distract him from the thought that his family died back in El Sereno. Why did he get to survive? He was the nobody. The one without a future. The one without any drive or goals. Life was a roller coaster for him and he was just along for the ride. Alicia should be here. She had big dreams.

In light of cops and ICE declaring open season on public assemblies again: Please do not ever try to flush someone's eyes out with anything that is not water.

Tear gas and pepper spray both suck ass and will do so for 15-30 minutes on end. They suck so much ass, in fact, that they have been banned from warfare under international law since 1993, but are fine to use on crowds of civilians because [shrugs in police state]. Those afflicted are temporarily blinded, will struggle to breathe or speak and will have any existing respiratory conditions compounded, and may experience corneal abrasions and chemical burns on their skin. You do not want to compound someone's suffering by giving them an eye infection that could potentially result in permanent blindness.

If you are at a location where shit pops off and you see someone trying to put anything that is not water in an afflicted person's eyes, STOP THEM AND USE WATER INSTEAD.

Yes, milk/maalox/whatever-the-fuck-else soothes capsaicin burn. In mouths or on skin. It should never go in or anywhere near an eyeball.

ONLY FLUSH EYES WITH WATER. Tear gas also sinks: people in pain will instinctively crumple to the ground, but that is the opposite of what you want in this situation, as that's the direction in which all the chemicals in the air are also headed. Stay as upright as you can, keep injured people around you upright too, and walk (running will compound your breathing struggles) away from the gas.

Once you are removed enough from the chemicals to render aid, WATER ONLY.

Thank you for reading this and going forward with more safety knowledge. Please take a street medicine or first aid class if you can; we can't all be street medics, of course, but the more people who know at least some basics, the safer we all are. Love y'all. <3

Nick nodded in understanding. He knew the risks of drugs. He knew that every time he shot up, it could be his last. There was risk of overdose, of dead veins, diseases, and organ failure. That didn't mean he could help it. He tried to stay clean and it never worked. He'd probably die young even if he got clean.

He wanted to cry for Gloria, but another man came in. This one was a cop. He wasn't usually so thrilled to see a cop, but this one came with the promise of freedom. Good. He hadn't done anything. But he doubted that it meant he was free to leave the hospital. He wasn't sure if the discovery of Gloria was enough to write off the psych eval. He felt it should be. But he wasn't going to wait around to find out. As soon as his hands were free and the coast was clear, he'd find a way to escape. He'd need a distraction, probably.

He watched Briggs remove the cuffs and offered him his charming, innocent smile. "Thanks," he said.

‘Yeah, let’s get these off,’ Briggs repeated as if talking more to himself. ‘Look, I know you are dying to get out of here. But I’m gonna ask you to stay put, alright? We’ll need to take a statement and…’ He licked his lips, fingers still hooked in the cuff. ‘There are some things we gotta iron out. You’re not a suspect in anything, don't worry.’ 

He left Nick a moment to process what he had just said, letting him conjure an escape plan. ‘That should do it. Nurse, he’s all your’s.’ Briggs shared a look with Mike before leaving the pair alone. 

Briggs’ chipper persona made Mike uncomfortable. It was unnerving that he could easily make someone feel like his best friend. It was why he was so damned good at his job. 

‘You okay?’ Mike returned to Nick’s side, taking his arms to inspect for damage from the cuffs.

A statement. Great. He didn't want to stick around, but Gloria was dead, and he was probably the last person to see her alive. He owed her a statement. If it could help, he'd give it. But he still wanted to get out of there. Preferably before his mom showed up.

The bigger issue was being careful with what he said. He got the drugs from a trusted source. From his best friend. He couldn't rat. Whoever Calvin got his goods from, though... that was a different story. He had to talk to Calvin about what happened, and find out as much as he could. He had to make sense of all of this. Why did it affect Gloria but not him? Maybe she had taken something else that she got from someone else. Or maybe Calvin needed a heads up about a bad batch.

But he considered for a moment that it could be something else entirely. He didn't want to think about his friend like that, but he was a dealer, after all. What if it was on purpose?

He looked to nurse Mike, whose voice pulled him from his thoughts.

"uh... yeah, I guess so. Just... thinking about what happened... you know, trying to get my facts straight."

Multiple concurrent wildfires are happening, two of which are extremely devastating. The Palisades Fire, which at this time is the deadliest wildfire in LA history, has burned 18 square miles worth of land and destroyed over 1,000 structures. The Eaton Fire has burned over 10,000 acres. And the Santa Ana winds are rapidly escalating the fires to where containment at this time is borderline nonexistent and firefighters are at a loss for what to do. People have died. The air is extremely hard to breathe from smoke. Elderly, disabled and transient populations are at great risk. Even 20 miles south and 30 miles west of the Palisades and Eaton Fires, the smoke is so bad that there are air quality alerts and the moon is red at night. These have been called “catastrophic urban firestorms” and the people affected need your compassion.

If you are directly affected by the Eaton or Palisades Fires, here is a list of safe evacuation centers:

For people who've been asking how to get involved in their community: WATCH THIS!

I'm not saying you have to be the one to work this job - it's not for everybody, and there aren't enough jobs available.

But what you can do is:

Advocate for more resources for the people doing these jobs (more funding for clean supplies, more space and locations, more salary budgets to hire people who can do this work)

Engage with any municipal budget talks or planning. Ask your representatives to push for funding for this, ensure it's got something earmarked, fight against reductions, fight for increases.

Proactively write to your council or representatives in support of programs like these. If it's not currently being discussed, bring it up for discussion!

BUDGETS ARE BEING ACTIVELY DISCUSSED RIGHT NOW. November is many areas' budget month. Go check your city council's website to see what exists, what's scheduled, what's discussed, and what your own representative is saying - and then give your support for programs like this wherever there's an option to give feedback.

Adopt the mindset. Most importantly, the way this lady broke down meeting somee where they're at, setting goals, celebrating them, not shaming the use but encouraging safe use, and ensuring they have the supplies and access to get help when they're ready. That's the attitude you want to spread! Share that! Definitely make sure you tell your local representatives, but this one you can share over Instagram or Facebook or whatever. It's a mindset that you want to have catch on.
