CouldB Entertainment sat down with Houston based band The Suffers during SXSW and asked some questions what it’s like in a day in the life of the band. The band got started back in 2011, although most of the members had known each other since they where teenagers. A few members had started a group that mainly did rock/reggae covers and things grew from there and more people started to joining in, creating newer and original music, which fizzled out the original band. The Suffers include 10 members, Pat Kelly, Kam Franklin, Adam Castaneda, Michael Razo, Kevin Bernier, Jon Durbin, Cory Wilson, Nick Zamora, Jose "Chapy" Luna, and Alex Zamora. Kam had mentioned that she had a drive to work with better musicians at a young age and had an urge to join The Suffers. The band came up with the name from the movie “The Rockers”. They first where The Sufferers, but alike The Wonders in That Thing You Do, The Sufferers was harder to say, so they shorted the name to The Suffers, making it easier for their fans. The Suffers create music as a group, some members are stronger at bringing ideas to the group, but it’s a collective group that most of the songs come about. Kam solely writes lyrics stating that she writes “what she feels at the moment”, so hearing what the band comes up with she makes the words spill onto the paper. The band feels it’s rare that Kam can already have lyrics ready when beginning compositions are just being created. Some of the members like to create beginnings of songs and send them over in the early morning or late at night and songs start from there. The Suffers talked about creating a demo tape of outtakes something fun for fans to see how music is created. I asked them what The Suffers feel like it is to “make it as a band” and for them, everyday is making it. Growing more each day and having more people show up at shows really makes them feel like they have made it. Setting new goals for themselves is something that they feel is attainable. Even the worst days are better then anything else to them. The Suffers were able to perform in from of Russell Simmons while out at SXSW, and to them, that was “not a bad day”. The Suffers talked about getting their music placed on local TV shows and about their track “Good Day” and they feel is perfect for the local TV show Great Day Houston (hint hint). The Suffers have a great all American soul sound with Rock/Reggae mixed in. The Suffers have a great sound and should be on your radar!
