I raise the secret-relationship Rabbot bet and say: they come out publicly, but no one believes them.
They’ve been friends for decades, and dating doesn’t really change anything between them, so no one at work notices anything unusual. Hugs at the start or end of a shift, casual conversations about whose place they’re staying at that week, being each other’s screensaver, making plans for their days off, it’s all normal stuff. Everyone assumes they’re just two lonely older men who lean on each other. Jack with his dead wife, Robby with his endless rotation of women, who would even think they were dating?
It simply isn’t a conclusion anyone jumps to.
They’re not big on PDA either. Sure, they hug, pat each other on the shoulder, drift too close into each other’s personal space, but that’s just what friends do, right? And they are best friends. There are no kisses on the mouth or openly intimate touches. Robby has never been one for that kind of display, and he wants to preserve at least the appearance of professionalism around the pittlings. He doesn’t want to set a bad example about workplace relationships for the younger generation.
So when they start dating and actually tell people, everyone assumes they’re joking. That it’s one of Jack’s bits. That Robby is just tired of being asked about his love life and wants people to stop. Jack and Robby are both surprised by everyone’s reaction, but whatever, it’s not like they need, or even want, anyone’s blessing.
Whenever Jack mentions having a date with Robby, people just snort and assume he means they’re going to watch a game with beers in hand or hit a sports bar to shoot the shit like middle-aged men do.
Dana is the only one who believes them immediately. In fact, she already knew, she just never said anything because she wanted to see how long it would take them to tell her. She’s thrilled, because it’s about damn time, and she thinks it’s hilarious that everyone assumes they’re lying or doing a bit. If they could only see how clingy and disgustingly touchy they are outside of work, no one would doubt them for a second.
It goes on like that for months, until Jack finally gets fed up and, at shift change, in front of the entire day and night staff, grabs Robby and plants a filthy, open-mouthed kiss on him. Just so no one has any doubt that he is absolutely serious about his relationship with Robby.
