MITOSIS?!!?
âMY TOE, SIS.â Thanks, Toby
metallicshard·:
Shard didnât even flinch when his fellow mech lashed out at him, he expected as much eventually, and it wouldnât exactly hurt anyway. He reaches up and bats the other robotâs arm away, stubbornly and defiantly shoving a finger in Metal Sonicâs face.
âYouâre missing the point! You had a CHOICE to do that! You could have done anything you wanted to do! If that means serving him still, FINE! But at least youâd be making that choice yourself!â
If it came down to it, Shard would have to defeat- possibly destroy- his metallic brother. If he couldnât change, couldnât overcome his programming like he had- like Omega, Gemerl and so many had- then there was no hope. Metal would have to be beaten down and inevitably repaired and rebuilt like always.
âSo what if it was a mistake? It was YOUR mistake! Yours to make and learn from, not HIS to just wipe from you completely! Havenât you learned ANYTHING after all these years?â
There it was again -- the SERMON about The Importance of Choice. Heâd already had this conversation with Amy, && it had been in a way that had infuriated him much less. He didnât understand it, then -- he only barely could grasp the concept now -- but choice was something he was capable of making, for this experiment of theirs. Theyâd had exercises where he would make choices -- but it was a work in progress. He only did it when she prompted him to. It wasnât something as easy to do on his own time -- even without functioning protocols, it just wasnât something he was â wired â to do.

Yes Daddy is back Hyper you are getting a head pat use it wisely
âOh ho ho splendid news indeed! I knew I could count on you Hyper, truly I can never hope to make a better masterpiece! I think you deserve a reward for your efforts wouldnât you say?â
âCome then, there are many things to be done, and those first files could give me the surge of inspiration Iâm looking for your next GIFTâ
A TRUE GIFT INDEED. HE WILL USE IT WISELY BY APPRECIATING IT IN FULL.
His engine hums just a little louder at the promise of a reward. A treat, he was sure -- especially considering if the upgrades were to come from the logged files && gathered information. There was a lot to learn, a lot to decipher, && an infinite amount of ways to grow from it. He could still remember being questioned on why he just â had to go back to Eggman. â It should have been obvious, then, && if they could see he was sure it would be obvious now.
Even without the permanent desire to destroy, to fight, to engage in combat -- the bond between this creation && his creator was indestructible. When heâd gone Neo, rebelled against the Empire && betrayed his own father, he could have been scrapped and forgotten. Heâd instead been rebuilt, && simply had limiting protocols put in to keep him from going down that same path, again. There werenât a lot of other weapons in the Empire that could say the same for their fates -- in fact, Hyper was relatively certain there was no one who could say the same.
He nods in response to the order, gladly following behind the Doctor.
>> [ LOADING FILES... ]
Theyâd see where this road of gods and otherworldly copies would take them.Â
metallicshardâ:
âYeah. Funny how that works out.â Not built to think or feel- sure. Thatâs how he was put together too, before uploaded with a digital copy of Sonic the Hedgehogâs essence and DNA. Every bit of programming and firewalls the Doctor could muster couldnât keep him from evolving. Trying to have his own unthinking- unfeeling- being with all the advantages of a sentient, free thinking mind?
That was the paradox, and the Eggmanâs ultimate hubris, that truly made Shard come alive.
âYou canât close Pandoraâs Box, pal. Youâre too far along for that. He could wipe you clean- start over again- but thatâs never gonna be YOU again. Itâll just be another wrench in the toolbox.â
He recalls the days when his older counterpart here did finally break free the first time- when HIS very data was used to create âNeo Metal Sonic.â Sure, he used that to wreak havok, but he made that choice on his own. âHeck, heâs already done it before. Would that version of you really be okay being forced back into the BOX? Youâre just his puppet, buddy. There was a time you wanted to be MORE than that, and he took that from you.â
He could have his system wiped -- he could be factory reset. He knew the Doctor wouldnât do that, though -- not now, not yet. That would be admitting defeat, after all. That would be pulling out of the bet before the final check, before he could properly play his hand. He surely wouldnât be defeated in this endeavor, but you canât win if you just give up. It likely wouldnât be until these developments started causing real problems in Hyper that something was done about it -- && for now, there was nothing severe enough to warrant that. He wasnât defective -- he still properly functioned, even with these developments.
Something was wrong, but..perhaps, in the end, everything would turn out fine. Heâd rely on the Doctorâs judgement for that. && if the Doctor elected to reset Hyper, heâd..be fine with it.. Heâd be fine with it..wouldnât he?
He understands why the protocols are failing, in the face of this -- itâs too much. Itâs too much for them to handle -- they were programmed to suppress &&Â force obedience, but it was illogical to suppress yet also log, learn, && express. It couldnât keep up, anymore -- so it was failing.
â There was a time you wanted to be MORE than that, and he took that from you. â
The moment of internal panic passes instantly, && Hyper is returned to the more normal anger that burns deep in his core. How dare Shard call that moment of defiance anything beyond a mistake Hyper had made? His engine has cooled enough for him to get it fully running, again -- good enough for a second fight. Still, he makes no more movement than a quick slash, halting just in front of the otherâs metallic neck -- a warning. His claws wouldnât slice through him like an organicâs flesh, but he was more than willing to push whatever he had to in order to do some damage, this time.
>> [ ATTAINING THE FORM OF { NEO_METAL_SONIC } ONLY TO TURN ON DOCTOR EGGMAN WAS A MISTAKE, AND NOTHING MORE. THIS UNIT HAS NO DESIRE TO BETRAY THE EMPIRE, AGAIN. DO NOT INSINUATE THAT THIS UNIT WOULD BE BETTER OFF DOING SO. ]
metallicshard·:
âDonât you hate it when somebody had you dead to rights?â He almost felt bad for finding humor in taunting the other- almost.
He had to admit, it was an interesting idea. Pretty stupid and risky, not to mention downright nuts- the Sonic in him knew that the real deal wouldnât take it well- but he couldnât help but be invested in the whole ordeal. Probably why he hadnât told Sonic yet- or anybody. Besides, it wasnât his secret to tell, and the hedgehog was about to find out anyway.
âGotta admit, I almost didnât think it was possible. I mean- hey, we canât all be me.â The presence of Sonicâs bio-data certainly helped jump start his own free will, and he knew his Hyper Metal counterpart here didnât exactly come with the same perimeters. â-and yet, here ya are. Surpassing my expectations.â
Heâd probably play it off as just following orders, but Shard knew. âYouâre not even sure WHAT youâre feeling. Youâre probably sitting there, wondering why youâre suddenly thinking soâŠâ The mechanical hedgehog leaned over and put his hand to his chin. ââŠorganically.â
He always had them -- the stupid little jokes, the taunts that echoed just how funny Shard found irritating him to be. Even with something like this, something that shouldnât be happening, something that shouldnât be possible, he found a way to make some sort of comment about it.
He listens silently, barely registering everything Shard says to him -- too busy adding different descriptors to log him under, if:then statements being registered as anger began to rise. Spite..he would admit he hadnât learned that from Amy. He debates for a single moment to make some comment about surpassing all expectations, as he was meant to, for all Sonics -- organic or not. He elects to remain silent on that front, as well.
âYouâre probably sitting there, wondering why youâre suddenly thinking so..organically.â He stops. He wasnât a machine built to think, to question -- he was built to obey orders && complete objectives. He was a weapon. He shouldnât consider the possible truth in that matter, at all. For a second, however, he does -- he begins the test on whether such a statement could be true. He doesnât make it past the first line before shutting it down. There wasnât a point. He couldnât deny it, it simply was true.
He was changing, he was thinking -- && he was doing so in a way that an organic would. He didnât consider && decide his actions based solely on logic, anymore. The fact that he could take into consideration anyoneâs thoughts or emotions on the matter, or whether or not the end result would be good for one party but bad for another, && why he cared about such a thing at all -- why he had the capability to care -- meant that he was, in fact, thinking------
>> [ ILLOGICAL. THIS UNIT IS NOT BUILT TO THINK OR FEEL. NO AMOUNT OF LOGGED EMOTION SHOULD CHANGE THAT. IT IS DUE TO THE PROJECT, SOLELY FOR THE PROJECT. THIS UNIT DOES NOT HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO FEEL. {AMY_ROSE} IS REQUIRED FOR THE PROJECT TO CONTINUE. THAT IS HER WORTH. THAT IS HER IMPORTANCE. NOTHING MORE. ]
...That was a lie -- or at the very least, it was denial. He could register that it was -- but he shouldnât have been able to do it. The fail-safes && protocols dictated that such a thing should be impossible, && yet.. He remembers the previous reasoning heâd considered ( heâd considered it..heâd thought about it.. ) -- that either they were failing, or theyâd intentionally been reprogrammed..
...Something was wrong. Surely, something was wrong.
metallicshard·:
âYou gotta learn to ease up a bit, âbig bro.â Your poor old heart might not be able to take the stress.â Charming as always, as to be expected from the classic model. Despite all his rage- heâs still just a bot in a cage, and so on. Funny to think that they came from the same assembly line- the same firmware. To a point, they were once practically the same, Metal Sonic the original- and his short lived upgrade turned independent thinker. Two peas in a pod.
Shard, being what he was, knew what it was like to be in this position. The cusp of change. Sonic had helped him become who he was today- become more than just another Metal Sonic. He was more than that now, far beyond what the restraints of programming could have ever let him be.
He turned to his fellow robot, smirk still plastered on his face. The other could throw serial numbers or filenames at him all day- it didnât change the fact of the matter.
    âYouâre changing, bud.â
There it was. It && the suggestion to relax a little are only met with an even harsher glare. It was always such a flooring truth to remember -- that they were so similar, && yet theyâd grown so differently. One had carved out his independence much earlier on, learning && growing with the Blue Blur. The other had been raised under the stricter rule of the Empire, rebelling only once before being tied ever-stricter down with fail-safes && protocols.
>> [ WE ARE NOT ORGANIC. WE DO NOT HAVE HEARTS. THIS UNIT CANNOT AND WILL NOT FAIL DUE TO {STRESS}. ]
As if he even had a full understanding && grasp of the concept, yet. He had a definition of it, certainly -- provided, of course, by his âteacher,â alongside many other now-logged emotions. He hadnât yet felt it, himself, but heâd witnessed it, to a degree. He had a visual comparison for it from two sources -- so he at least knew how to recognize it in other creatures. Beyond that, however, was currently beyond his understanding.
Itâs that very fact of the matter -- that he has an understanding, that he knows && can consider more than he ever could && did before, that causes him to pause when Shard actively points it out.
He canât deny it -- it angers him that he canât deny it. Still, wasnât it also something to take genuine serious notice of? It meant that there was potential Amy would succeed in her endeavors -- that she would be the one to win this little wager between herself && the Doctor. Was this a good thing -- this was a good thing, wasnât it? Not for the Empire, obviously -- after all, if she succeeded, the very leader would be forced to do something that was, needless to say, very different than his usual. Hyper could easily think of a few lackies that such a thing wouldnât sit well with -- some of which had been taken as lackies solely because of the threat they could stand if they werenât being controlled. In that sense, it was a very bad thing.
It was, however, potentially good for Amy.
He shouldnât care about that -- such a consideration shouldnât enter his reasoning process at all, && yet it was. Shard was right -- he was changing.
>> [ DISREGARD THAT. THIS IS NOT A TOPIC TO BE DISCUSSED. ]
As angry as it made him, he couldnât -- &&Â wouldnât -- deny it.
@cravedcombatâ
âWell, somebodyâs sure seen better days.â The robotic hedgehog called out from above. Heâd seen pretty much the entire thing- when you made it your lot in life to keep ahead of Eggmanâs movements, you tended to take notice when his top enforcer got let out of his pen.
Especially when that top enforcer had a personal connection.
Shard dropped down and landed next to his fellow âbot, from just over the cliff side his brother in blue had made a crater in. He gave the older model a sly look, not unlike that of their organic template.
âOlâ blue sure knows how to make it PERSONAL, huh? Bucket breath- thatâs a new one.â He joked.
Of course -- there was no rest for the wicked, wasnât that how the saying went? The annoying, organic counterpart had left, which meant Hyper would have to eventually face his equally annoying âbrotherâ model, as âShardâ so lovingly wished they would call each other. Hyper refused. He would never consider a model so defective any âfamilyâ of his. The self-rebuilt robot held no care for their shared creator, && Hyper was certain Doctor Eggman held no care for Shard.
He loathes the fact that he knows he wouldnât be able to take up arms against the other copy ( not without risking internal damage, that is ) -- but more than that, he loathes the look that passes across the otherâs face. Of course, taking after Sonic in more ways than one, heâd even make expressions && perform actions oh-so-reminiscent of the true blue hero. It disgusted Hyper to his very core.
Hyperâs claws twitch with the desire to remove it by any means necessary.
>> [ ARE JOKES ALL YOU HAVE TO OFFER? THIS UNIT STILL FUNCTIONS. SECONDARY OBJECTIVES CAN EASILY BE ENGAGED. WHAT DO YOU WANT, { METAL_SONIC_2.0 }? ]
Perhaps he would be willing to risk it, just a little, if he were pushed enough. Until then, he supposed, if anything worthwhile was presented, he could..talk. Perhaps, for once, something useful could be gained from it.
cobaltspeedster·:
Sonic gave his robot double a good long look. There had to be more to it than that, but he wasnât likely to learn anything more here. Itâs possible he was being tricked, and obviously Metal knew more than he was letting on. He really should just bring the mech back with him- but that might also compromise the safety of his friends. Heâd just have to grab Amy and bring her to Tailsâ place, or to the Freedom Fighters. Anywhere she couldnât be used for whatever plan the Doctor had for her.
Sonic wasnât a fool either, Amy had been acting suspicious lately. The whole raid to reclaim Sally put a lot of doubt in his mind, and he chose to leave it alone, and trust her to keep her secrets her own. But⊠this was lining up to be a little too convenient. Amy hesitates to fight Eggman and now his favourite toy was on his way to nab her? Something stunk here.
âŠBut he wouldnât get that out of Metal- the only way heâd figure this out, it to talk to Amy herself.
âAlright metal mouth, you run on home and take a memo for me. Iâm down to kick your bossâ âbuttnik any day of the week. And anybody who comes after MY friends has to answer to the Fastest Thing Alive.â
The hypersonic hedgehog gave a salute with his fingers, turned, and blasted off back towards Amyâs house- time to get some answers.
...He didnât trust this. On one hand, he doubted Sonic would try && drag the answers out of him any more than he had, if his response meant anything. He wasnât the only one the Blue Blur had to question, though. He was glad heâd sent out that message -- in theory, sheâd have time to prepare. Sonic wasnât the type to get violent, especially not with his friends, but heâd likely have words if Amy ended up leaking the truth.
The metallic copy rolls his eyes at the proposed memo -- he wouldnât bother reporting it. It was useless comments followed by that which they already knew. In some cases, it was something they could count on.
The speedster blasts off in the direction Hyper should have been able to go -- but oh, well. His engine finally steadily hums back to life, && though he does turn back the way he came from, he does just as he said he would in his message. He remains online, constantly checking for any incoming messages or distress signals.
Heâd be ready to turn the other way in a split second -- ready to do anything && everything he might need to, && even that which might not be asked of him.
cobaltspeedster·:
Got âem. That response showed he was onto something- something Eggman didnât want him to know about. Something concerning his friends- or just Amy at the very least. The fact his counterpart didnât outright admit it told him there was more going on than meets the eye.
âI gotta lotta pals who have enough smarts to dig around in this tin can.â Sonic responds, leaning over to bang his knuckles against the robotâs head to emphasize his point. Tails and Rotor- even Uncle Chuck- they were all smart enough to deconstruct Eggman tech on their own, and if they came together? No question they could find out what the robot was hiding.
If it concerned the safety of one of his friends, there was nothing that could get in Sonicâs way. Nothing.
Sonic stood up and crossed his arms. Regardless of the outcome here, heâd won, and it meant heâd have to swing by and bring Amy somewhere safe. âUp to you, chrome dome.â
His immediate reaction is to try for round two -- legs working to force the metallic copy to his feet. He succeeds, but with the still-glaring warning message repeating in his head, he knows he canât push it much farther, not yet.

THIS UNIT WILL REMAIN NEARBY. ] >> SEND MESSAGE. Â Â Â >> SENDING... Â Â Â >> ... Â Â Â >> MESSAGE SENT.
He runs through his remaining options -- what he can do until his engine has cooled enough to properly run, again. He couldnât bluff, && there wasnât much more he could mislead Sonic. He could be vague..perhaps it could buy him some time. Thereâd only be so much he could beat around the bush before Sonic would catch on, but..for now, it was something beyond just the truth.
>> [ THIS UNIT IS ACTING ON A SECRET PROJECT OF DOCTOR EGGMANâS. YOU ARE CORRECT IN THAT IT REQUIRES HEDGEHOG DESIGNATED {AMY_ROSE}. ] >> [ CURRENT PROGRESS OF PROJECT IS UNKNOWN. ]
It wasnât easy for him to measure, after all. How was he supposed to know just how much interacting with her -- learning from her -- was changing him? How was he supposed to predict whether or not sheâd be successful, or if sheâd fail? Organics didnât run on logic, && he didnât have her thoughts or memories or data of any form coded into him -- there was no way for him to predict exactly how she would act or plan in the future.
cobaltspeedster·:
Again and again, his robot double always came back for more. Every time, without fail, Sonic beat him. For all his tech smarts, the Doctor could never replicate what he had- drive, passion, heart. There was more to his speed than just numbers- at the end of the day, Sonic was a living being who always had further limits to break⊠and Metal was just a pre-programmed machine.
Even then, when his counterpart pushed forward again, Sonic knew it was done. Momentarily impressed sure, but there was no robotic second wind, he was done. The mech is blasted away by the sheer force of Sonicâs speed- and the hedgehog skids to a stop over the robotâs steaming and smoking form.
âSonic the Hedgehog. Accept no substitutes.â He shot the comment at the robot smugly, taking a moment to boast- it always felt good to one up a rival, especially if they worked for the wrong team. âSo then, Bucket Breath, whatâs Eggman WANT this time?â There wasnât much out here that Metal could be after, itâs not like there was anything here of note except-
    -Amy.
â-oh, I get it. Back to your old TRICKS huh? Kidnap my FRIEND to get to me? Thatâs a pretty lame repeat scheme, even for Eggman.â
In every sense of the word, Hyper hated his organic counterpart. Even as his engine hums desperately -- high pitched, slowly lowering in speed -- && limbs slightly shake as he steams && smokes, he still manages to direct a burning glare in response to the smug comment.
At his assumption, however, Hyper pauses -- hesitates. It wasnât exactly accurate, but the guess beats a little too closely to the bush. Sonic knows specifically what ( or rather, who ) Hyper was after, something that was dangerous in its own right. If the project was to continue, Hyper wouldnât be able to just stay away from Amy Rose, nor her from the Empire -- but if there was the concern that the Empire was intending to capture or harm her, there was no way Sonic or the Freedom Fighters would leave open a chance for them to meet.
Sonic couldnât learn the truth. There wasnât much of an excuse Hyper could come up with -- much less a believable lie -- but he had to think of something, regardless of whether or not it might be too late.
He had to be careful with how he answered, if && when he answered.
>> [ THE PLANS OF {DOCTOR EGGMAN} ARE NOT FOR YOU TO KNOW, ONLY TO FIND OUT. ] >> [ THIS UNIT WILL DISCLOSE NOTHING TO YOU. ]
cobaltspeedsterâ:
He was pushing back, huh? Sonic expected nothing less from one of his oldest rivals. Even under strict programming, the robot still managed to push itâs limits- that was never not going to impress. âSorry bucket breath, but this handsome mug is trademarked!â
Sonicâs speed boost ability was temporary at best- a momentary jolt to help him catch up when he needed it, and offered some mild protection. But it wasnât even close to what he could REALLY do- and while Metal was impressive enough to match him as a kid, he would really have to poor on the juice to keep up with Sonic now.
The moment the energy of his boost began to fade, Sonicâs legs started to further blur out as they took on the appearance of a figure 8. His sheer speed grinding his soles into the earth bellow with more and more intensity as he passed beyond the speed of sound- and kept going higher and higher until he had broke another level. âYouâre just- too- SLOW!â
It always inevitably happened. Doctor Eggman would find the limitation in Hyperâs engine that kept him from keeping up with Sonic â that kept him from defeating Sonic, in the end â && he would always push forward with it, further && further, until reaching a new limit.
Yet somehow, Sonic always seemed to go even further beyond that.
It was illogical, infuriating, && yet there was only so much Hyper could do about it. If he wanted (and the protocols installed in him allowed it), he could go Neo, copy Sonicâs biodata, && be more than capable of standing as a much greater threat to the Blue Blur. If he could use the particle accelerator, or if they had a chaos emerald to install into a different model of his engine, then perhaps he could do just as much, or more. Without it, however, the limitations would always stand, && they would always catch up with him.
>> WARNING: CORE TEMPERATURE RISING. OVERHEAT IMMINENT. >> ADVISING: DISENGAGE.
He ignores it. He could keep going â keep pushing. Even as Sonicâs speed was slowly beginning to shove him backwards, he pushes his engine just a little bit moreââ
It lasts for just a moment -- for just ten more seconds was he able to push harder, enough to briefly stop the Blue Blurâs advance. His core reaches a temperature the cooling system canât keep up with. His engine shorts -- only momentarily, but even a second was long enough for Sonicâs raw speed to launch his metallic counterpart down && out of their standstill. Scraping && rolling across the dirt was an agonizingly familiar feeling -- one second..two seconds..three seconds pass before itâs followed by the cooling system catching up && returning him to a state where he could at least function.
If he wants to remain that way, however, he has to regrettably recognize that he can not do that, again.
There is a light within me, warm and radiant, that exists only because of you.

âOh, like the ones I always beat?â If Eggman really was planning something again- let alone moving pieces into place already- it looked like that free time Sonic was hoping for would have to be put on hold again. Ah well, he could make it up to Amy later- even if she didnât even know he was planning on visiting.
Before he could toss out another quip however, his counterpart was on the move. He channeled some of his latent energy for one of his quick BOOSTS- which covered him in a slight protective aura as he collided head to head (literally) with his robotic copy. A temporary stalemate, and an all too familiar one. âWe really MUST stop meeting like this. Strange, isnât it?â
He elects to ignore the first part of the regular banter. Claim him to be blindly loyal to the Empire all you like, but he did have faith in the efforts of Doctor Eggman. Perhaps the plan to end it all wasnât in action or even being thought up, yet -- but one day he would have a plan that Sonic wouldnât be ready for. Surely, he would.
â Strange, isnât it? â
Another model might have paused at those words -- hesitated from the resurfacing of some memory. This wasnât that same Hyper Metal Sonic, however. That RAM had been lost forever, having literally melted away years ago. The most it does for this upgraded second model, however, is push him to pour more energy into his engine, pushing back against the equally strong boost of his organic copy. One of them would give out sooner or later -- && with the electrical discharge building &&Â now releasing, history was likely to repeat itself. If Hyper wasnât careful, heâd temporarily overheat his core, once again.
