Hi Frogman! Hope you are well! I know you have overwhelming number of people bugging you, so I try not too, but today you said something that did not completely shed light on the subject. On the subject of Abstinence, you quoted exodus, but then completely ignored the book of Matthew, where it states to lust after someone in your heart is a sin, not a scare tactic, but actually teaching people how to be generally a good person. You can't just pick and choose scripture. No more space left to type
I don’t believe sexual attraction should be considered a sin and I don’t think people who lust are bad people. So I’m not sure the book of Matthew is very relevant here.
I quoted religious texts for two reasons.
First, I wanted to expose the hypocrisy of conservative folks who wrote in (and they did) to tell me I can’t cherry pick passages from the bible and that the old testament doesn’t count.
To them I say, I’ll stop when you stop. No more Leviticus for you. Good luck in your next debate on gay marriage.
The second reason is that I truly believe it is important to know where religious abstinence came from. It really does not seem like it was derived from a benevolent God. And I think a lot of modern Christians see that as well.
A long, long time ago… if men had a daughter, they would get totally bummed out. So a bunch of old guys with daughters got together and decided that if men wanted wives, they would have to pay for them. They decided to sell their daughters into marriage to make up for not getting a son.
Then another problem arose. Their daughters were doing the deed before they were sold into marriage. Women who were not virgins were not desirable in these transactions. So they said, “God says if you do the deed before marriage, you’ll go to hell and stuff.”
Religious abstinence was born.
But people are people and sex still happened. So these men decided to put in an insurance policy.
“If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife”
You want to skip over this stuff and pretend it is not in there? I think it is important to look at our past. Too see that maybe the idea of abstinence wasn’t born out of morality and purity. That maybe the idea of virginity being special was fabricated because some farmer could get a few extra goats for his daughter.
The option to not have sex is taught in every proper sex ed course. It isn’t excluded. The teachers aren’t telling kids to go out and fornicate immediately. They strongly emphasize that you should wait until you are physically and emotionally prepared. That you should not feel pressured to do anything you are not ready for. And if you do feel ready, they also give you the knowledge you need to do it safely and with consent.
Religious abstinence programs shame kids for having “lust.” They use dubious statistics about all the horrors premarital sex can cause. They lie about the effectiveness of contraception. And all of their teaching stems from a 5,000 year old passage that was written so old men could get more goats for their daughters.
And there is also that small matter of these programs not even being effective and just causing kids to have unprotected sex.
