The landscape was formed over millions of years by volcanic eruptions and erosion. People later carved homes, monasteries, churches, and entire underground cities into the soft volcanic rock.

During the early Christian period, Cappadocia became an important center of Christianity. Communities built hidden churches and monasteries in the valleys, many decorated with remarkable frescoes. The region later became part of the Byzantine Empire and eventually came under Seljuk and Ottoman rule.
