People love to talk about whether or not disabled people can work
but if you can work just fine and your disability is destroying your ability to have a life outside of work (because work takes all your energy and more)
Dead silence. Nobody cares.
File this under, oh you can be active for 4 hours? You can work part-time. Um no, I have to get ready for work (30 min) get to work (15 min) get home from work (15 min) feed myself all day (30 min) maintain myself, my home and my life (15 min, yeah right), which leaves 15 min for work and absolutely nothing else.
This is so accurate, back after Iâd relapsed I wanted to try and go in for one class at school so I could still stay in contact with the education system. I let slip during a meeting that I managed to drag myself to that I could manage about 4 hours of activity a week, which the teacher sprang on to mean I was being lazy for just trying to get to 1 hour class. Never matter that it was 30 minutes travel, that I would have to get washed and dressed, that I would probably still need to recover for 3 days from it.Â
Far too often abled people see the things they do easily as ânon activitiesâ, they donât realise that for many disabled people these things have to be carefully planned and measured, and sometimes they simply canât be done.
reblog bc the non activities thing seems really important words
I get X number of pain-free steps per day right now, which means that, for large conventions (like SDCC), I need to be in a mobility device. I had someone ask if I used up my steps every day before transferring to the scooter, and look surprised and a little horrified when I said âno, I save them so I can go to the bathroom unassisted.â Like, they had never considered that walking is involved in peeing.
Reblogging for the important point that the term âactivityâ may mean something very different and much broader for a disabled person with a chronic pain or fatigue related condition compared to its meaning for a non disabled person. If youâre tired enough, simply sitting up in a chair rather than lying in bed is an activity that drains energy otherwise usable for other things. A thing I knew from other people with pain and fatigue related conditions, but worth reinforcing for followers who didnt know or had forgotten.

Owner is Nneka and she is 27 years old and a single mother to a beautiful daughter.
I just recently left the military last month, after 9 years of service and two overseas deployments. I am starting a fresh, new chapter in my life.
This fall I am attending college. I will study to become a history teacher in my local area. I am about making a positive change in my community. This is one step towards that. I want to use this platform and this site as way to reach out to the millennials who want variety, and who want to be apart of a bigger cause. ~ Nneka
The goals of Innovative Supplies are:
Open and deposit profits into an account with black owned Citizens Trust Bank.
Donate 40% of all profits made from book bag sales to local charities.
Provide quality products.
Hire local minority youth.
Support other small businesses
Use economically sourced materials
Use environmentally friendly packaging
I always support black buisiness when i can find one. And Nneka has got not just an ordinary store which sells school supplies with the original prints representing black culture and black history, but has a big goal of helping the community! And this is really cool! When you can realize you ideas and also help people around you and make this world a little bit better place. #Love it!
Oh Iâm an asshole.
So today pulling into Stop and Shop, this lady cut me off and nearly drove into me, and then, when I tried to pass her, she swung to the right and nearly hit me again, and then flipped me off.
So somebody is having a bad day and taking it out on me. Thatâs fine. Itâs harmless, and I donât know whatâs going on in this womanâs life. Iâll give her the benefit of the doubt sheâs not just a piece of shit and is just having a bad day.
But then I park and she follows me, and gets out of the car and starts swearing at me and getting in my face.
Now I go from âindifferentâ to âIâm gonna fuck with this womanâs head.â Now I would say Iâm a gentleman of size, and in all black and bemohawked I probably look spookier than I actually am, so props to this lady for getting in my face. Now of course Iâm not going to hit her, or even threaten violence. Thatâs shitty. Nobody should get threatened with violence.
Instead, I take a step back, narrowing my eyes like Iâm studying her face really closely, and then I touch one of the several piece of âoccultyâ jewelry Iâm wearing (none of which, by the way, are magicked in any way at all). Then I mumble some nonsense under my breath, and then make the fig gesture and the horns at her.
She stops, wide-eyed.
âWHAT THE HELL DID YOU JUST DO TO ME?â
I chuckled, and shake my head. âNothing at all.â I say in a not-terrible convincing voice. âBut every time something bad happens to you today, youâre gonna be thinking of me.â
Then I winked at her, and walked away.

After six days of observation [of village dogs in Belize], I had not seen one fight between dogs or any aggression towards people. What do these dogs know that the average dog in the United States doesnât know? Are domestic dogs in âdevelopedâ countries losing the ability to get along with each other?
Based on the number of phone calls behavior specialists like myself receive in a month about dog-dog aggression, Iâd say the answer is, YES. So, with all the advantages money can buy, why are our pet dogs becoming more and more aggressive with each other?
The answer:
- Isolation - Confinement - Lack of regular, frequent interaction with a variety of stable dogs of varying ages - Ignorance of dog culture and social communication skills - Expectations that all dogs must get along with each other

Unarmed Black Man With Hands Up Shot By Police.
Charles Kinsey, 47, a behavior therapist from South Florida was shot in the leg three times by the police in North Miami while laying on the ground with his arms up and trying to help his patient with autism who had run away from a group home.
It all started when someone called 911 and said there was a man walking around with a gun. However it was Kinseyâs patient who was sitting on the ground cross-legged, playing with a toy truck.
Charles got shot by police despite telling them he was only trying to help his patient.
The police shot him, handcuffed him and left him on ground bleeding.
North Miami police have not released much information at all. They havenât released the officerâs name, they havenât given us an update on the investigation. However, they did say that the state attorney is now a part of this investigation.

The Comfort Dog Project, established by The Big Fix Uganda, is the number-one thing making my heart feel full today.
The Comfort Dog Project, promoting powerful dog-guardian companionship to facilitate the psycho-social rehabilitation of war survivors suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Twenty-five years of war between the Lordâs Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan government devastated Northern Ugandaâs families and communities. The economy of the region collapsed. Most residents lost their homes and possessions and were forced to live in camps for more than 10 years. Children were abducted and forced to carry out carnage, women and girls raped, fathers murdered. It has been estimated by mental health professionals that 7 in 10 people in Northern Uganda have been traumatically affected by the war.
Although there is now peace in the region, internal wars are still being waged and lost. Tens of thousands of survivorsâwith no social and mental health supportâstruggle to cope with anxiety, loneliness, and despair and a host of caustic psychic and moral wounds that constitute post- traumatic stress disorder. The high rate of suicide and substance abuse in Northern Uganda is the tragic measure of the severity of PTSD in survivors and of the immediate need for effective intervention.Â
The Comfort Dog Project is designed to fill this psycho-social therapeutic void by providing professional trauma counseling in conjunction with training in how to care for, teach and create a solid dog-guardian bond as a way to further reduce the symptoms of PTSD.
The BIG FIX Uganda uses the powerful healing power of dog companionship to help war trauma survivors as part of a program of psycho-social rehabilitation. Dogs in need of good homes are rehabilitated by our team, temperament tested and spayed/neutered.  They then are placed with war trauma survivors selected to be part of The Comfort Dog Project.  The guardians make a lifetime commitment to their dogs, live with and care for their dogs, and participate in a weekly training program.  Upon graduation, the dog-guardian teams become project ambassadors visiting villages and schools to:
 - educate others about the importance of being kind to animals,  - teach others how to use positive reinforcement training techniques,    - and to serve as testimony of the healing power of human-dog bonds.
