Spider-Man: Brand New Day has reactivated that part of my brain that latched onto Spiderverse so hard in 2023 that I spent an entire summer making a Spidersona and coming up with a whole Marvel world for him to be a part of.
I'll probably end up sharing more, but this is my way of saying that Brand New Day was really good and I loved it.
still have to make a proper "Big Finish audios I've listened to" review post...I keep putting it off because I keep spending money I do and do not have on new audios, as well as diving more into fanmade Who content on YouTube. Also, general life stuff got in the way...I've moved out the family home and am living by myself in the time it's taking me to finish the post, haha.
all I'm gonna say right now is that, at some point, I'm gonna be singing the praises of the new 12th Doctor series to the moon and back, because...holy shit, it's GOOD. And the newest 13th Doctor audio, and the upcoming 11th set...having 11, 12 and 13 be my three favourite Doctors has never been better in the last couple months, I've been feasting.
Also Circuit Breaker, that's been fairly good so far. Finally gave me an excuse to buy BBC Audiobooks stories, so that's gonna be another hit to the wallet if I choose to pursue those lol
A post I made a little while ago looking back quickly at the Chibnall era of the show, and missing the vibes and good times that era brought me once I started getting into it, keeps getting some attention. That sentiment feels more true than ever right now, because what the fuck?
I have a lot of feelings about what's happened to the show in recent days (among a mass of other complicated feelings I have around life stuff happening to me right now, hearing one of your comfort shows getting the axe for a while doesn't help), so I want to talk about them.
On the one hand, fuck Russell T Davies. Genuinely. For the guy that helped bring Doctor Who back in 2005 and make the show a household name again, the way he's managed to shoot the show in the foot as a writer and showrunner is baffling. I took issue before with his "storytelling for generating content" sentiment, and that's also never been more true than it is now.
The way he's effectively poisoned the future of Doctor Who with the cliffhanger ending of The Reality War, forcing whoever comes next to either find some way to make his nostalgia-chasing bullshit work, or reboot the show with a clean slate just to get away from it. Maybe there is a secret third option that can be taken, but I don't know.
I said before that Ncuti Gatwa had some brilliant episodes in his run as the Doctor, and hell, RTD even wrote some of them. For me, though, that makes his backwards approach to storytelling and running Doctor Who even more baffling. If he's still capable of writing good Doctor Who, then why didn't he?
On the other hand, more eyes than ever are probably gonna be thrown onto both the officially released expanded universe media (Big Finish, audiobooks, comics, etc) and fanmade content like fanfics, fan audios and fan films. And that is undeniably an amazing thing.
The fans know what they're doing, and the passion they have for their projects and the love they have for Doctor Who oozes out of every aspect of what they make, be it a professional production on par with the show itself, or something more homemade and amateur.
I made a post talking about some of my personal favourite fan audios, and I've discovered so much more that I think another post is due soon. Channels like TT Productions have multiple audio ranges to pick from, and for other forms of content, there's the DW2012 team on YouTube with several brilliant fan films to watch, JaeWrites on AO3 championing the Fugitive Doctor with some incredible stories, and so much more.
Of course, the official stuff is also pouring in the goods. Mostly I'm talking about Big Finish cuz they're the big name, and the one I've been turning to most. We got some undisputed bangers making their way to our ears in the months to come, and if you're able to get your hands on some Big Finish, go for it.
All of time and space has never been more accessible, I think, and with so much to choose from and enjoy, I think we'll get through these second Wilderness Years just fine.
That's all I really got to say. I'm frustrated with what's happened to the show, and I hope when it does come back that Russell T Davies stays well away from it, but the expanded universe and fanverse are thriving, and there's never been a better time to dive in than now.
Hell, I'm feeling just about ready to properly start producing my own efforts, with an original incarnation of the Doctor that I'm currently calling the Splinter Doctor. Watch this space, more to come soon.
Gotta give props to Jo Martin right now. Went from a side character with one episode and a few cameos to basically the closest thing we have to a current incumbent Doctor. Maybe if we back Circuit Breaker hard enough we can convince them to give her a run on TV 🙏
Four years after finding herself suddenly thrust back into normal life (or about as normal as one can get after being recruited by UNIT), Yasmin Khan returns to Sheffield to investigate a series of missing persons. The only connection between them is a growing reliance on Polaris, a new AI chatbot. But she's not alone, and a chance encounter at Polaris's HQ is about to bring her into a new Doctor's orbit...
Definitely check this one out if you haven't yet, and have a hankering for some good Doctor Who fics! Jae's set up a really interesting mystery with Polaris, and Fugitive/Yaz has been such a good pairing to read in Jae's works
Im gonna be so real can yall actually talk about ways we can support trans women in the UK instead of giving all the attention to fucking JKR. I already know that Harry Poter sucks, I wanna know how to actually HELP people. Something something you have to love the oppressed more than you hate the oppressor

I hate when people act like there’s an age limit on fun, excitement, whimsy, silliness, new experiences, finding love, making mistakes, or literally doing anything other than being an NPC drone who has a corporate job and 2.4 kids like sorry you’re a boring bitch but some people continue to live life beyond the age of 30
Happy Easter to everyone! Finally breaking myself free from a spot of writing burnout with a short story involving dinosaurs! This short follows a time travelling team in Cretaceous Appalachia in search of an egg for their superiors, with an assortment of creatures awaiting!
Hope you all enjoy : )
Appalachia, Western Interior Seaway
Cretaceous Period
Under the harsh Cretaceous sun, gathered around a coastal shoreline battered by crashing waves, a team of six people stood around small cases of equipment, taking assorted tools and firearms and strapping them along whatever belts and pockets they had on them.
One of the six, leader of the team Adrian, held a small rectangular device in his hand, watching it blink red with the image of an empty battery flashing on its screen. “Alright guys, time hopper’s on recharge. We have six hours, so get your gear and let’s get moving.”
Another of the six, Brooke, produced a pair of binoculars and gazed around the shoreline they were standing on. Not too far from the group, a small gathering of Hesperornis waddled along the sands of the beach, squawking and flapping their wings at one another. “Remind me again, what does the boss want us to get?”
“An egg.” A third member of the team, Hicks, chimed in, checking that his assault rifle was loaded. “He wants us to get something big and mean, so we can bring it back and he can grow his collection of extinct beasts.”
Brooke rolled her eyes, watching through her binoculars as the Hesperornis began making their way into the shallows of the water in front of them. “Of course he does. He should join us on the next mission, if he wants his own private prehistoric zoo so bad.”
Hicks turned around. “Yeah, because the boss is well known for showing his face and getting his hands dirty.” He was sarcastic, scoffing as he fully loaded his rifle. “Adrian, you’ve worked on this team the longest, what’s your thoughts on all this?”
Thinking for a few seconds, Adrian shrugged. “I’m not sure. I mean, we’re hardly the only people in the world doing this.” He looked out toward the open seas, briefly spotting something breaking the surface, though he couldn’t make out what. “If you ask me, I’d rather we not mess with the past, but if we have to, it should be us.”
Hicks and Brooke both shrugged, but mumbled in agreement. “Sure, but, he’s asked for a predator this time. Big one, too.” Brooke added.
“Protection?” Hicks suggested. “Like Adrian said, we aren’t the only ones making missions to the past. Other people have gotten their hands on dinosaurs, and they could just as easily sick ‘em on us. Better to level the playing field than not.”
The team had finished getting all their equipment ready, two of the other soldiers gathering the now-empty cases and slinging them over their backs. Adrian took one case as well, heavier than the others, and strapped it onto his back.
They began to make their way away from the shoreline, the squawks of the Hesperornis growing louder as the team approached the beaches they were waddling around in. From the shallows, the water burst and a medium-sized mosasaur had beached itself, one of the birds flailing around and screeching inside of its mouth. It was almost like an orca going after a seal, the mosasaur pushing itself back into the water with its prize as the other Hesperornis scattered.
“Don’t suppose anyone wants to go for a swim and bag one of their eggs?” Hicks asked, somewhat jokingly, pointing his thumb toward the departing mosasaur.
Adrian shook his head. “Mosasaurs don’t lay eggs, dumbass.” He continued leading the way, the others following him as Hicks lagged behind, before the distant, whale-like groan of the mosasaur startled him and sent him catching up with his team.
---
Two hours later, and Adrian’s team had found themselves within a dense forest, the sound of a flowing river close by. They had yet to run into anything that would meet their superior’s criteria of ‘big and mean’, though they had spotted a few animals. Crested pterosaurs soared occasionally in the skies above, and gentle hadrosaurs grazed the more open areas of the forest alongside spiked, armoured nodosaurs.
Dinosaur sightings had become more scarce, until the team came to a halt. Something was bellowing close by, Adrian raising a fist to stop his team’s progress. Quietly, he signalled for them to duck in the grass and against the thick trees close by. The bellowing drew closer, now accompanied by the snapping of branches and crunching of leaves.
Bursting into view, a lone and injured Eotrachodon appeared. One of the hadrosaur species inhabiting the forests, this one seemed to have been separated from its herd during a predator attack. Confused and struggling to effectively manoeuvre itself around, the dinosaur was suddenly joined by its attacker, knocking through the trees and clamping down on the neck of the Eotrachodon.
Appalachiosaurus, a tyrannosauroid dinosaur, and one of the largest predators of its ecosystem, had the Eotrachodon at its mercy. While not as powerful as its more famous cousins, the Appalachiosaurus was still a perfectly capable predator. Adrian’s team suddenly tensed up, the safety of the grass and trees now felt fleeting in the tyrannosaur’s presence.
Slamming its prey into the ground, the Appalachiosaurus bit into the hadrosaur’s underside, starting to feast. Hicks had his assault rifle ready, watching as the tyrannosaur raised its head to swallow the strips of flesh and entrails dangling out of its mouth.
“Big, and mean.” Hicks muttered. “Reckon the boss’ll take this one?”
Adrian kept a careful eye on the Appalachiosaurus as it continued to feed. In his hands, a small pad of paper and a pencil, carefully taking down notes. He glanced down quickly, before finishing up and returning his gaze to the dinosaur. “Yeah, a tyrannosaur would impress him, but we need to know where it's nesting. We’re after an egg, remember?”
“You want us to follow that thing?” Brooke hissed quietly, keeping herself far out of the dinosaur’s field of view. “How do we know it has a nest?”
“Tyrannosaur parents will go out hunting on their own, and bring back whatever they don’t eat for their young. If this beauty has babies, it’ll-” Adrian paused, slowly raising a finger toward the Appalachiosaurus. It had eaten its own fill of the hadrosaur, grabbing a hold of the carcass by its neck and dragging it away.
Hicks lowered his rifle slightly, looking at the rest of the team. “Right, what’s the plan?”
“We follow it. Keep it in your sight, but not too close. We don’t want that thing catching our scent.” Adrian was quiet but firm, the rest of the team collectively nodding and following Adrian’s lead.
The Appalachiosaurus had already gotten some distance from the team, holding the corpse of the Eotrachodon in its jaws, leaving a trail of blood and some viscera along the forest floor. The team got up from their hiding places and began making their way along the trail of the tyrannosaur.
Once the team had left, a pair of small, feathered dromaeosaurs left their own hiding places to eat away at chunks of Eotrachodon flesh that the Appalachiosaurus had left behind…
---
About half an hour later, the team were still trailing the Appalachiosaurus back to its nesting grounds. They’d followed the theropod to the banks of the nearby river, keeping to the rim of the forest in order to stay out of its sight. They’d had a couple close calls where the tyrannosaur would turn their way, but thankfully they’d avoided aggravating it.
At the river bank, Adrian and his team had ducked near some bushes. The Appalachiosaurus had laid down the carcass it was carrying, heaving itself to the water’s edge for a drink.
One of the soldiers on Adrian’s team laid down near a bush at the edge of the river, spotting something else nearby, behind another bush. “Hey!” He quietly called toward Brooke. “I think I got something!”
Brooke turned to the soldier, who was already inching toward the other bush. She glanced at the Appalachiosaurus, noting the theropod was still occupied with drinking from the river. “What did you find?” She whispered.
The soldier peeled back some of the leaves, spotting a nest dug into the ground, a clutch of 6 eggs comfortably fit within. A smile formed on the soldier’s face; he pumped the air and pointed to the nest, looking back at Brooke. “It’s eggs!”
She was surprised, and quietly crawled her way to a fallen tree that Adrian and Hicks were crouched behind. “Hamilton found a nest.” She whispered.
Adrian looked surprised, motioning with his head toward the hydrating tyrannosaur. “What, its nest?” He didn’t seem to believe what she was telling him. “I didn’t think tyrannosaurs had their nests at a river bank. Way too risky for their babies.”
“Well, he said he found eggs, so may-”
Brooke was cut off by the sounds of Hamilton screaming. The water at the river bank exploded, a colossal crocodilian head holding Hamilton in its jaws by his waist. He screamed, punching at the croc’s mouth and trying in vain to open its mouth and free himself.
“No.” Adrian muttered to himself, quickly scrambling to load his weapon. He looked back up over the tree, the giant croc tossing Hamilton up in the air and snapping its jaws shut when he fell back into its mouth, swallowing him in one fell swoop.
The Appalachiosaurus had stopped drinking, turning its head around to watch the commotion. Another soldier had rushed toward the croc, discharging their sidearm into its thick, scaly body to try and drive it away. It hissed, turning to look at the soldier before raising its bulky tail in the air and swiping it toward the soldier, knocking them off their feet.
“We have to help them!” Hicks got ready to jump over the fallen tree and join the fight, but was pulled back down by Adrian. “Get off!”
“No!” Adrian almost shouted, but caught himself in time and kept a quiet tone. “That’s a goddamn Deinosuchus! One of the most powerful predators here! You really want to get between that and a fucking tyrannosaur?!”
Hicks was clearly annoyed. “It killed Hamilton!”
“I know, and I’m sorry!” Adrian hissed. “I really am, but these guns aren’t gonna hurt that thing!”
Brooke looked over the tree, spotting the fallen soldier scrambling to get away from the Deinosuchus as it clambered completely onto the land. They ran as the croc tried to bite down on them, headed toward the Appalachiosaurus and its kill. The dinosaur immediately became defensive, bellowing out and grabbing the attention of the Deinosuchus.
She looked around, before her eyes fell onto the bush that Hamilton was inspecting. “Wait. The boss wanted something big, right?”
“Yeah…and?” Adrian asked, not fully getting what she was thinking of.
“Well, you said yourself you doubted that the nest was the tyrannosaur’s. What if that’s the Deinosuchus nest?” Brooke took a sidearm from her belt and checked that it was loaded. “If it starts fighting the tyrannosaur, we can make a run for the nest, take an egg, then break for the forest. It won’t follow us past the treeline. Right, Adrian?”
He looked toward the Deinosuchus, spotting that it was already starting to grapple with the dinosaur in front of it. The soldier it had knocked around was scrambling to get away, before a tail swipe from the Deinosuchus knocked them back into the water. They tried to get away once more, but the croc took a step back, one of its rear feet stomping down on their head and crushing it beneath the water.
“No, not at that size.” Adrian was hesitant, clearly having reservations against the idea, but a Deinosuchus clearly fit the criteria that their superior had laid out for the mission. “...Okay, fine. You and Hicks provide cover fire, I’ll grab Marian and we’ll raid the nest. Soon as we have the package, run like hell to the forest, and we’ll go back to the shoreline.”
“Got it, boss.” Brooke nodded.
“Good luck.” Hicks nodded too, jumping up over the fallen tree and pointing his assault rifle toward the two brawling reptiles. The Deinosuchus had grabbed onto one of the tyrannosaur’s small arms, pulling at it with all its strength, while the theropod fought back against its grip.
Adrian ran to one of the bushes, where the last member of their team was hiding. Marian flinched at first, but relaxed when she saw Adrian. “What’s the plan, sir?”
“You and I are going nest raiding, Brooks and Hicks are on cover fire. Come on!” He pulled Marian up onto her feet and ran for the Deinosuchus nest, with her following close behind.
Brooke and Hicks kept their weapons raised, but with the Deinosuchus and Appalachiosaurus locked in combat, they felt little need to open fire on either animal. The croc had torn off one of the Appalachiosaurus’ arms, causing the dinosaur to reel back in pain. The croc swallowed the arm and lifted its head, its eyes darting over toward its nest…
Adrian and Marian had reached the Deinosuchus nest, opening up the empty case that Adrian had been carrying on his back. Carefully lifting one of the eggs, Marian put it into the case, slotting into an egg-shaped hole surrounded by a soft, protective material to shield it from breaking. There was space in the case for a second egg, which Marian carefully laid inside.
The Deinosuchus pulled itself away from the wounded Appalachiosaurus and reentered the water, making a line quickly for Adrian and Marian. Hicks opened fire with his assault rifle, the bullets either harmlessly colliding with the reinforced hide of the Deinosuchus, or causing it to briefly swerve, but not break its course. “Adrian! Marian! Get out of there!”
Marian turned her head to the water, spotting the Deinosuchus approach as its head emerged from the river to snap their way. Adrian grabbed the case and pulled it onto his back, taking out a revolver and firing a few shots at the croc. Most didn’t seem to do anything, but a shot close to its eye prompted the Deinosuchus to flinch for a second, giving him time to break away.
Brooke and Hicks had already gotten to the rim of the forest, Adrian close behind, slowed down just a little by the new weight of the case on his back. Marian tripped over a rock, hitting her head hard off the stony ground. The Deinosuchus hissed closely behind her, stomping its way over toward her. With the others out of its reach, its anger at having its nest raided was directly solely onto Marian. It was close enough that she could smell the rotting flesh that hung off some of the croc’s teeth.
It bumped Marian with its head before grabbing her arm in its jaws and turning itself back around toward its nest. Marian cried out and tried to get herself away, but the Deinosuchus simply shook its head with great force, tearing her arm clean off and sending her tumbling back into the dirt. Marian fell into the Deinosuchus nest, as the gargantuan croc loomed over her, and a faint ‘crack’ popped through the air from the remaining eggs…

In about 40 minutes, the remaining trio had gotten through the forest once again, and were back where they had started their journey. The sun continued to shine bright in the sky, and a pair of Pteranodon rested on some nearby rocks, snapping at some fish they had grabbed from the water. A group of four Eotrachodon were munching on some grass, accompanied by a pair of nodosaurs. The Hesperornis that Brooke had observed earlier were also still around, frolicking in the shallows of the ocean.
“We still have a couple hours before the time hopper’s recharged.” Adrian took the small device out; its red light had turned to an amber glow, the battery on the screen now partially full. “Let’s find somewhere safe to camp up. It won’t be long now.”
Hicks turned back to the forest. “Those eggs better be worth it.” He lowered his rifle, regret all over his face. He shot a quick glare at Brooke. “We should have just stuck to following the tyrannosaur.”
“Hey.” Adrian put a hand on Hicks’ shoulder. “I get it, okay? These missions are never easy, and not everyone comes back. We did, and we got exactly what the boss ordered.” He offered a small smile. “And we got two, so we can ask him to pay up more. We’ll give the extra money to their families.”
Hicks thought about it for a second, before nodding his head in agreement. “I can live with that, I guess.”
Brooks looked around, before pulling out her binoculars. “In the meantime, how about we see if we can spot that mosasaur again?”
“Alright. Tenner says we catch it eating something.” Hicks took the binoculars from her hand and started walking over to some of the rocks along the shore. Brooks laughed and ran after him, leaving Adrian behind.
He opened up the case, making sure both of the Deinosuchus eggs were unbroken. Confirming that they were fine, he put the case up over his back again, walking toward his teammates. The two Pteranodon chirped and clacked their beaks toward him, before taking off and flying into the open sky.
Im gonna be so real can yall actually talk about ways we can support trans women in the UK instead of giving all the attention to fucking JKR. I already know that Harry Poter sucks, I wanna know how to actually HELP people. Something something you have to love the oppressed more than you hate the oppressor
This is Haolong dongi, a new species of iguanodontian ornithopod found covered in what is basically,,, hedgehog quills??
The fossil is a stunningly preserved skeleton from China that includes evidence of hard armour scales on the tail (like in the much smaller Kulindadromeus), and a coat of spines along its neck and back! The name appropriately means "spiky dragon".
Not only is a spiny iguanodont wild on its own (this individual is over 2 metres long and is a juvenile, other ornithopods with quill-like structures are much smaller), these spines also appear to be an entirely new skin structure? They're apparently not feathers or scales, but a secret third thing.
