Tips to combat Artist Block!
So it’s a Friday night and you have sacrificed your social life to stay at home and draw. You sit down at your drawing desk in your boxers (me) and you prepare your supplies. Finally you are ready to work…. Your mind goes blank! You try to start the imagine engine again………… NOTHING! Don’t panic you haven’t lost your Friday night yet! Before you grab that pint of ice cream and sob uncontrollably consider these tips to breaking the block
Play Video Games: I always felt like games are an evolved art form forcing players to make decisions while absorbing a storyline, visuals, and sounds. The fact that the play is open ended and visual gives you room to creatively solve problems. This can sometimes help ease the pain of birthing you ideas. It’s like doing creative kegels!
Listening to music: Music tends to enhance most other art forms. Music is a powerful tool because music tells a story or has moments of intense feels. So turn up the funky beats and get drawing!
Try a Creative Exercises: As an artist sometimes we forget that creativity and imagination is a muscle that must be kept active. Try coming up with 2 random adjectives and 1 random noun…. Good your picturing the 2 adjectives with the noun?…. Now it’s time for you to draw that angry sweaty elephant moth. Creating a situation like this were you are drawing completely in the dark can bring some new ideas and skills to the light!
This is just a taste of what you can do in a pinch and I hope it helps!

Creating Compelling Characters
Hello Folks! It's been awhile but I just wanted to thank those of you who continued to follow this blog during my unexpected hiatus. Today I wanted to talk about compelling characters and tips on how to create them. 1. The Setting: WHAT?! wait you said we would learn how to create compelling CHARACTERS, not settings. This is true but it all starts with where the character is from! For example if you want to make a character but you decide he is from the mid west that says the character may have an accent, use different language, and it can effect appearance. If someone is born in Gotham City they would be pale be cause it is a city were the sun never shines. 2. Family life: Does this character have family or friends that could potentially impact motive. In the instance of Batman and Superman, you have Bruce Wayne who experienced the death of his parents first hand which made him swear to his code. Superman on the other hand was raised by a kind and understanding Midwestern couple. This means Superman grew up with individuals that taught him many of his principles. 3. Sticking to your beliefs: I have seen some stories were unexpectedly a character will act out of character. When you are building a fictional being they come with mannerisms, likes, dislikes, love interests, maybe a job with a horrible boss, etc. remember that your character is constantly effected by these things. This is what makes a character unique, it's why we remember that Naruto's favorite food is ramen and that Sonic the Hedgehog had an insatiable love for chili dogs! Those little quirks make us who we are, they make us unique! 4. Roll with it! : Often times we get caught up in writing a story that we forget to act as the character we created. Instead of going heavy and spelling out your story think about letting your characters unfold the story! Act as your character in a certain situation and you will notice that the characters make very interesting decisions that can guide the narrative along. Well that's it for now! This book has a very detailed description of 6 types of commonly seen folds and I think is one of the most educational resource on how to draw folds(Besides Vilppu and Bridgeman).

Natural Black Hair Tutorial! Usually Black hair is excluded in the hair tutorials which I have seen so I have gone through it in depth because it’s really not enough to tell someone simply, “Black hair is really curly, draw it really curly."

So I’m doodling at lunch and lately I been thinking about what it means to be black. This is a question that I have thought about a lot in my life. I grew up in suburbia and people would say I’m white washed. Most people feel that I can’t sympathize with “real” black people. The conflict is strange when you sit in the middle of 2 warring sides. I wonder if all this hatred in the black community has been stirred by oppressors. Is everything going on right now an excuse to kill us. I love my people I truly think even if the whole world looks down on us it’s because secretly they wanna be us. We are cool, strong, smart, streetwise, fashionable, creative, and fearless. I love black but I feel like something out there wants me to hate who I am. I can’t lie I have said many times I hate black, but it’s normally a result of mistreatment. Even thought you talk proper and dress professional to others you are just a monkey in a suit. You take that to the hood and you are a target, you aren’t black enough despite the skin you wear. All this hatred keeps us all down in more ways than one. Maybe they are just afraid because they know we have the power to change everything…
Starved Artist
So those of you who may not know me personally don't know that I have been in the long process of moving. On top of that life has been a little stressful. I am excited though to have a place to call home! So while this has been going on I haven't really been doing art which has been driving me CRAZY! The other night I finally did a quick series of digital art while I was drinking the week away. Beyond all that I'm here to ask the question what do you do as an artist who doesn't have the opportunity to work? Do you get anxious or depressed because you can't work? How do you feel when are gets pushed to the back burner?
