I have encountered this version of the idiom often. No one I have asked about it appears to have difficulty understanding that it’s about people having different preferences, more or less. No one I asked even brought up the use of the word “their” paired with the singular “each.”

Even people who seem against the use of singular they had no problem with the idiom. People continue to baffle me.

Inspo: that one scene where Crowley is lying on the floor, depressed, and Endymion (1872) by George Frederic Watts

The painting depicts Endymion, the beautiful young shepherd from Greek mythology who was granted eternal sleep by Jupiter at the request of Diana, the Moon goddess who loved him. Diana is rendered as an ethereal, barely corporeal figure, “luminously visible,” as Watts himself described her. The entire scene is conceived as a circular composition, the two figures forming a closed, dreamlike cycle.

Watts, a major figure of British Symbolism, saw this subject as an allegory of dream, desire, and the unreachable. He reworked the painting several times throughout his life, trying to make Diana “more mystical, more visionary.”
