❝ you’re bleeding everywhere! ❞ vax to vex?

Vax says it like he’s trying not to let his voice break, but Vex hears it anyway.

Of course she does. He’s always been terrible at hiding anything from her.

The world feels distant. She tastes iron before she realises it’s her own blood, warm at the corner of her mouth, trailing down her jaw in a slow, stubborn line. She wants to wipe it away but her arm is so heavy she cannot bear to move it.

“Vax,” she murmurs, “It’s fine.”

“It’s not fine.” He quips.

He’s beside her before she fully blinks, hands everywhere and nowhere at once - under her shoulders, at her ribs, trembling against her skin. “Vex’ahlia, look at me.”

She tries. She really does. His face blurs, then steadies, and she realises his eyes are wet. Her brother never cries. Not really. Not unless it’s her.

“Hey,” she whispers, “Don’t. I’m okay.”

“You’re not.” He presses his forehead to hers, breath shaking as if it’s about to break. “You’re bleeding, gods Vex, you’re bleeding everywhere and I can’t - I can’t lose you.”

The workshop was too quiet without him.

The lamp still burned low, illuminating his piles of blueprints and catching the light of his materials left scattered across the desk.

The scent of him —— of gunpowder, smoke, cedar, oak —— it lingered and refused to leave her. Though she wasn’t sure she ever wanted it to.

Vex’ahlia stepped inside, every sound amplified by the echo the room produced. The soft scrape of her boots, the catching of breath in her throat as she looked towards his chair, half turned as if he might come back any moment.

But she knew it would be days. Some diplomatic mission of sorts, he’d spared her the details as was her want. All she cared about was how long he would be away.

She traced the back of his chair with her hand, pulse faltering inside her wrist as she imagined the warmth he would leave there.

She longed for him. She yearned for him.

She closed her eyes, and in the quiet, she could almost hear him. The steady drag of graphite across paper, the way he breathed when something didn’t quite go to plan. Her body remembered his doings even when her mind tried not to.

The ache came quietly, not sharp, but slow, spreading through her like a familiar warmth. She caught her lower lip between her teeth and smiled to herself —— at how easily he could haunt her, even in the best of ways.

“Come home soon, darling.” She whispered into the stillness.
