Thank you for over 31k hits and (almost) 3.5k Kudos! I can’t express how grateful I am to be able to share my work and have it received by like minded people <3
To celebrate: a proper post and a re-edit to improve flow as well as get spelling/grammer errors I missed the first time :)
Back to my roots of having to extrapolate story and character beats much off of crumbs 😂
CW: blood/fighting
Ryan hasn’t always lived here. His memories of another, though, are blurry, so, it doesn’t really matter if there was a ‘before’. The only thing now is the after that isn’t an after because the shithole was all there ever was to begin with in his life.
Kinston’s the kind of place you go if you don’t want to be found. Or, if you’re a nutcase. Birds of a feather, and all that.
His dad’s one of those, even if Ryan’d never say it outloud. Who else would drag their fledgling family across the country for funnelwebs and a room that smelled perpetually like stale mold no matter how many bottles of lysol you spent scrubbing. The bones of that building were rotted, just like every person hanging to it like broken connective tissue.
When Ryan is eleven, he gets in a fight with a boy. They wrestled on the ground – woodchips and baked asphalt in the dying February blaze – like boys should, spitting vexation over something that didn’t matter enough to remember. Ryan got a black eye for it; the boy got sent to the hospital with a cracked skull. It was an accident, Ryan was bigger, stronger, if just barely.
Ryan remembers how his hands were sunk in the boy’s shirt, cotton so close to foreign skin it burned. His heart pounded deafeningly as they rolled, body over body, Ryan on top, then the boy, then Ryan again. His knees sat astride the other’s furious body with something bright burning through him too, something that made everything shades brighter and more alive.
When next they rolled, the boy’s head connected with a sickening thunk against the tetherball pole. His pinching hands released Ryan’s shirt so quickly it left him winded as they flew up, clutching the back of his head and coming away red.
Whatever sparks they shared between them died so quickly neither could move, frozen, instead left staring at the alarming color. Ryan could only watch as the boy’s eyes flickered from his fingers to Ryan and back again, afraid.
As beautiful as Leviticus is it would have benefited from another 30 mins of exposition bc why do we have literal CRUMBS for character traits and backstory to work off of 😭
