I saw someone on twitter saying that you don't even need to read the source material in order to ship angbang, and perhaps that explains why there are so many people who know nothing about how their dynamic was described in canon and rely solely on fanfics.

Which wouldn't be my problem if the very same people didn't harass and insult shippers whose opinions differ from the popular fanfic authors...

But also I just don't understand how you can be a fan of something and not want to read the books and form your own impressions, independently of what fanon tells you.

Yes, we don't get any scenes with Melkor and Mairon together in Silm, but you should still engage with the book in order to understand them as characters. Not to mention the many quotes from HoME and Tolkien's letters that provide insight into their relationship and into them as individuals.

Also explains why so many angbang shippers don’t seem to even like Melkor just the master/servant dynamic they want to force on to it like a square peg into a round hole

Cause the Silmarillion is his book. King Brat is laughing and rampaging and plotting all over that thing. You can’t read that and come away from that thinking Sauron is the only intelligent, plotting, seductive interesting one

Exactlyyyy. No wonder they hate Melkor so much when the only portrayal of him they know is Sauron's abuser, who is also dumb and incompetent in every single thing he's ever done 😭😭😭

This is why they don't see him as Mairon's teacher, from whom the latter later literally COPIED many of the tactics and methods he used during the Second and Third Ages.

I know I'm an angbang-brained weirdo, but the fact that Mairon stayed in Melkor's temple after he finally sent the Numenorean fleet to its death is such an important detail to me.

Because he could have chosen to be anywhere. He could have sat in the king's palace, even on the throne itself, which would also have been symbolic, and no one could have prevented him from doing so, even if they had wanted to. (By that point people had already started calling him a god.)

But instead he chose to remain in a place that not only symbolized his own power over the island, but also connected him to Melkor.

"Look how far I've come and how much I've accomplished. I've avenged both of us now."

It's as if he wanted to share his victory with Melkor, to celebrate it together the way they did in the old days.
