Dancing with The Devil

It was a beautiful place, completely decked out for the occasion. It was just a seasonal dance, but the venue was really something. The tables of food and refreshment looked great as well, and Roy vowed to return there at some point. Kitten fulfilled her role of tour guide and brought him from hallway to hallway, stopping to chat with groups of attendees whenever she knew somebody.
Speedy smiled politely as people stared at them as they walked by; he knew that his mask must look odd in a setting like this. He unfortunately was not as well-known as any heroes on this side of the country, so people were evidently puzzled by his presence. He briefly greeted whoever Kitten dragged him towards. He didn’t really progress beyond small talk, and whenever a pretty lady seemed a bit too interested in the archer, Kitten whisked him away to introduce him to the next couple or group in site.
Roy didn’t have too much in common with these teens anyway; he had spent too much of his own adolescence fighting crime. Hm, maybe he should see how many interests he and his date shared. Nah, that “romantic alone time” sounded too good for him to care about things like common interests.
“Did I meet all of your friends yet, Kittycat?”
Though his eyes might be wide looking at how decadent all of this was, she was unable to tell. That was the thing about masks, they hid the truth. Not that she cared to know. Just like with Robin. She didn’t really care whether he was actually enjoying himself. This was all about appearance for her. Her own personal mask.
Kitten exchanged niceties with those she deemed worth interacting with, ignoring those she either hated or didn’t care for. In all honesty, even those she was friends with weren’t really her friends. The good thing about high school was that mutual hatred of others could make for a solid foundation. It made school survivable at least.
It felt good to rub another superhero date in the faces of those classmates that sneered at her. Those girls that teased and made her life hell years prior. They said success was the best revenge. Now here she was on the arm of another handsome hero.
“Enough of them,” she replied eagerly, hugging herself to his side. “And it looks like the dance floor is starting to finally fill up. Aren’t you going to ask me to dance?” Long lashes fluttered, a deceptively innocent smile spreading across her features. Like he had a choice. The hand that wasn’t wrapped around his arm was wrapped around the trigger should he give the wrong answer.
