Found this flag with a bit of history to it: This 24-Star flag measured 10 feet by 17 feet and was designed to be flown from his ship's mast, had 24 stars, including a small anchor sewn into the corner of its blue canton. The proud captain began calling his flag "Old Glory," taking the flag around the world several times in his whaling vessel the "Charles Doggett." Driver retired in 1837 and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he flew his beloved flag on all patriotic occasions, using a rope suspended across the street, and Old Glory became a well-known sight for the people of Nashville. By 1861, he had modified it to show 34 stars, but had to hide it when Tennessee joined the Confederacy. When Union forces retook Nashville, Driver brought out his flag once again and it was raised over the state capitol. The 6th Ohio Infantry, which was present at the ceremony, soon adopted the name "Old Glory" as their motto. Source: ICC.org 4 July 17 Continuing decline in the number of reported incidents of maritime piracy against ships has been revealed in 2nd quarter piracy report of the ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB), published today. (***Convenient to say so. Note the 'reported' incidents) According to the report, the first half of 2017 saw a total of 87 incidents reported to the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre compared with 97 for the same period of the previous year. 2017 ICC IMB Piracy figures report some of the lowest figures seen in the last five-year period, the latest piracy report shows, that in the first six-months of 2017, 63 vessels were boarded, 12 fired upon, four were hijacked and attacks were attempted on another eight vessels. A total of 63 crew has been taken hostage so far this year while 41 have been kidnapped from their vessels, three injured and two killed. The encouraging downward trend has been marred however by the hijacking of a small Thai product tanker en route from Singapore to Songkhla, Thailand. The hijacking, at the end of June, was conducted by six heavily armed pirates who transferred 1,500T of gas oil to another vessel. The incident followed a similar pattern to a series of product tanker hijackings in the region which occurred approximately every two weeks between April 2014 and August 2015. To prevent criminal gangs carrying out attacks on other product tankers, the ICC is calling on Malaysian and Indonesian authorities to take robust action, in the same vein as their response which brought perpetrators of the previous spate of attacks to justice. Cooperation between Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines has been recognised as the fundamental reason for the overall decline in the number of reported incidents in and around the area. One wounded in missile attack on UAE ship off Yemen. One crew member was wounded when Yemen's Houthis fired a missile at a United Arab Emirates ship carrying medical supplies in the Red Sea on Thursday. A statement from the UAE armed forces said that the ship came under attack opposite the Yemeni port of al-Mokha. The statement warned that the UAE would pursue those behind the attack. "The attack did not cause any damage to the ship, while a crew member was hurt," WAM said. The Houthis had reported the attack earlier, broadcasting a grainy video of what Houthi-run media said was a missile being fired at a Saudi-led coalition vessel. The missile burst into a ball of fire as it hit its target. The attack was part of a protracted conflict between the Iran-aligned Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition. The coalition wants to restore the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, whom the Houthis have forced into exile. Al-Mokha was captured by the coalition from the Houthis earlier this year after heavy fighting. The assault phase of Operation Overlord was known as Operation Neptune. This operation involved landing the troops on the beaches, and all other associated supporting operations required to establish a beachhead in France. Operation Neptune began on D-Day (6 June 1944) and ended on 30 June 1944. By this time, the Allies had established a firm foothold in Normandy. Operation Overlord also began on D-Day, and continued until Allied forces crossed the River Seine on 19 August 1944. The Battle of Normandy is the name given to the fighting in Normandy between D-Day and the end of August 1944. The date when Paris was liberated, 25 August 1944, is sometimes used as the end of the Battle of Normandy. Another milestone came on 1 September, General Eisenhower took direct command of all Allied ground forces in north west Europe. The majority of troops who landed on the D-Day beaches were from the United Kingdom, Canada and the US. However, troops from many other countries participated. On D-Day, the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy. The American forces landed numbered 73,000: 23,250 on Utah Beach, 34,250 on Omaha Beach, and 15,500 airborne troops. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British): 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7900 airborne troops. Of the first wave onto the beach less than 1 in 10 survived (pictured). 11,590 aircraft were available to support the landings. On D-Day, Allied aircraft flew 14,674 sorties, and 127 were lost. The Royal Air Force, United States Army Air Force, and other Allied air force units and personnel provided protection and support as the fleet crossed the English Channel and as the troops landed on the beaches. Airborne troops landed by glider and parachute on both flanks of the beach landings, to defend against German counter-attacks. Mr E. Purchese was a medic in the Parachute Regiment, and landed by air on the east side of the main beach landings: “ My unit was 225th Para Field Ambulance, 5th Para Brigade, 6th Airborne Division. We were at Keevil Camp for a week before the invasion, being briefed in detail for our drop near the River Orne. Take off was about 23.00 hours on 5th June. After running into tracer fire, which was returned by our rear gunner, as we crossed the French coast we dropped at about 01.00 hours near Ranville. We made our way to a pre-arranged rendezvous, thence to Ranville where villagers in the dark (approximately 03.50 hours) whispered ‘Bonjour’ [‘Hello’] from bedroom windows. We arrived at a chateau. Our second-in-command knocked and asked if there were any Germans inside. There were, and four or five surrendered and were made prisoners. We then entered and set up our various departments. I was in a surgical team, and we started operating about the time of the main seaborne landing, which was announced to us by a thunderous barrage from the Navy. We operated all day and had two hours sleep early on 7th June. We used a landing light from a glider for the surgeon to see by. Many lives were saved by plasma, the bottles slung from rigging lines cut from parachutes. Suspected pirates in a skiff attacked a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, MT NAVIG8 Providence, in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday 01 June and were driven off by the armed ship's security, the European Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) said. "There was an exchange of small arms fire between the suspected pirates and the maritime security team on board the tanker," the maritime force, known as EU NAVFOR, said in a statement. The guards aboard the tanker reported seeing a ladder in the skiff. EUNAVFOR said anti-piracy forces in the area were jointly responding to the attack by searching for the skiff. Pirate attacks have surged in 2017 following years of relative calm. Last year, only two ships reported being fired on off the Somali coast all year.
