NOBODY TOUCH ME IT’S ABOUT TO BE STONE OCEAN DAY
Our dedicated shipping mods were hard at work this weekend lovingly packing up #AdamDirtZine orders! Check out this lovely sight~ Please keep in mind that we are shipping from the USA so USA orders will arrive prior to international!
🕸️ Jolyneeeee 🕸️
So I made this Jolyne playlist years ago when I first read Stone Ocean and now it’s finally relevant, I hope y’all enjoy 🦋
Y’all. Y’ALL.
One of my Twitter mutuals posted a link to a how-to for a one-page zine yesterday, and decided to try using it to turn one of my fics into a little book!
And it worked. so. well.
(it’s the Kira fisting fic y’all all hate me for, sorry not sorry)
I made a little template in canva using the folding instructions for the paper as a guideline (the little diagram at the end shows you how to orient the text etc so it will be right side up when you fold it). I put my text in (1100 words, 7pt font, a little room to spare) and then sent it to the printer! Folding it was really easy, and there’s no glue or staples required <3
Here’s the link for anyone else who wants to give it a shot! I’m going to turn all my little ficlets into books now.
Once upon a time, not that long ago, there was a wizard in a tower.
...Once upon a time, today in fact, there was a wizard in a glorified mud puddle who was letting everyone’s dinner burn while he marinated in his own self-pity.
I’ve been doing essentially nothing but play Baldur’s Gate 3 for the last 3 weeks, so naturally I’ve wandered off my usual interests to write Baldur’s Gate fic, and here it is! I hope you enjoy it~
Gale of Waterdeep’s Fool-Proof Recipe for Venison Stew (AO3)
And a picture of my sorcerer Tav (Alocasia) for fun and posterity
(I did not kick Withers out of the camp, I promise. He’s my favorite)

Let's talk about 𝔃𝓲𝓷𝓮𝓼 !
I'll be referencing Fanlore in this post! You can read its very comprehensive article on the history of zines here: https://fanlore.org/wiki/Zine
Like many others, I've experienced the frustration of being rejected from lots of zines with highly competitive application processes. Stop me if you've heard this one before: booming fandom, hundreds of applicants, 30-40 artists and only 4 writer slots. Sound familiar?
These very commercialized fan projects, which often also feature merch and reward tiers, are actually a fairly recent development, made possible by the advent of social media. Traditional fanzines were typically made by groups of friends, at home, for fun and not much else.
Fanzines as a concept actually date back at least to the 1930s. They were often drawn/written by hand and later xeroxed (once xeroxing became a thing) before being stapled together for distribution.
Interestingly and almost entirely opposite from the zines you see on Twitter today, traditional fanzines were comprised almost entirely of fanfic and meta. Art books came later, and tended to be separate projects.
Today we see art and fic together (often in proportions featuring much more of the former than the latter). For print zines, this makes sense--a piece of art takes up 1-2 pages, while fic takes several, increasing book weight and printing/shipping costs.
However, this imbalance in creators persists even in digital-only PDF zines. I'll save this criticism for another thread, but--writers: your work is valuable. Fandom was built on the backs of writers. You created AO3. Never doubt the importance of what you do.
Now we get down to the common frustration of app-based zines. 50+ writers competing for 10 slots, 5 of which have actually already been filled with guest contributors. Not only does this setup foster feelings of inadequacy in those who get rejected repeatedly, it encourages us to eat our own. This manufactured scarcity puts zine slots up on a pedestal: an ultimate goal to be achieved in order to be taken seriously by other fans.
Add to this that many fandoms seem to share the problem of the same 3-5 people running every single zine, which is another can of worms, and you end up with a lot of dejected writers and artists who just wanted to participate in something fun together.
So what do we do about it? Well, I'm going to let y'all in on one of the best-kept secrets in fandom:
𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓬𝓪𝓷 𝓳𝓾𝓼𝓽 𝓶𝓪𝓴𝓮 𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓸𝔀𝓷 𝔃𝓲𝓷𝓮.
Literally no one can tell you no. No one can stop you. No one can tell you you're not talented enough or your works aren't special. Literally anyone can make a zine whenever they want. That's the *point* of zines. That's the way all zines used to be!
You can make a book with just your own works. You can also partner with a a few friends. The world is your oyster! There are a number of free tools you can use to format your zine into a digital PDF. I'm partial to Canva because it makes things very easy, even if you're artistically challenged like me.
You can distribute it as a free file download, and there you have it! You're done! You made and published your very own zine.
"You can make your own zine" isn't a concept that gets circulated much, but it is a very empowering one. If rejections have you down, consider making your own fanbook! You might be surprised by how fun it is.
This thread is in no way meant to discourage anyone from applying to app-based zines if they spark joy for you--I've done several, and they can also be very fun!
However, I personally believe that it's important in fandom to remember our roots, and also to lift other fans up whenever we can.
I and several friends are running a free, digital zine for fun right now, and it's been a blast to work on. I hope that y'all have just as much fun if you decide to make your own!
TL;DR:
Jazzed to be part of this project!!
My accompanying piece for @klapollo-minibang
My partner was @crimsonherbarium, read their fic “Apollo’s Serenade” on ao3: https://archiveofourown.org/works/34241176
“Why not?” Klavier turned to face Apollo, leaning against the counter.
“Huh?”
“Why don’t you sing? Have you never tried it?”
“I just…” Apollo blinked. “Don’t.”
“That’s a shame. You have a nice voice, Herr Forehead.”
I can finally share my full piece for the @klapollo-minibang!
In this fic Apollo finds himself, very much against his will, standing in for Klavier's missing duet partner at a local festival ♥️💜
My partner for the bang was @marlowememo!
Read it on AO3 Here :)

I'm volunteering for a literary journal right now and there's two things I think you all should know.
1. Most people that submit to literary journals are cis white men. We know this because our journal has an anonymous survey about demographics for people that submit.
2. Most things that get submitted to the creative non fiction section are on the level of middle school "What I did over the summer" essays.
I cannot see the demographics of the people whose essays I'm reading, but guys, if you are wondering if you should submit your work to a literary journal or not, I promise you that just in terms of statistics there are a lot of mediocre cis white men and people in general confidently submitting weird crap that isn't literature to literature magazines. Do it. Submit your work. Please. If you want there to be more diversity in literature, be the diversity. Do it. Do it do it do it.
In general literary magazines want to include more diversity, but if poc, queer people, disabled people, etc. don't submit their work then they aren't gonna get more diverse because we just won't have the material necessary to get more diverse. Submit your work. Do it. Do it. Do it do it do it.
Here's a list of university run literary journals. Do it. Get published.
Many indie lit mags also welcome works from BIPOC and LGBTQIA creatives because the editorial staff themselves are in that demographic. Quarantine brought on the start of the SO many indie lit mags - it’s almost a golden age. Don’t be afraid to submit — there will always be so many niches and aesthetics that one will bound to be the one that fits your style.
There is so much work from marginalized narratives in litmags these days — people lament there is no representation in media, but that disregards the progress and diversity of the works of editors and writers who help make these litmags possible.
There is representation, and it is flourishing. They are waiting to be read.
The Lumiere Review compiles a list of submission opportunities every month, and it are always very useful:

So please, please submit!
Independent magazines are great too! I’m more familiar with the university journal scene so I appreciate this addition.
The Shindo family has always had enemies, and Ainosuke is no exception. He has sacrificed dozens in his meteoric ascent to the top, both on the battlefield of politics and on the S track. Most of the people he knocks down never get up again.
Except one.
[A mysterious masked skater suddenly appears at S, stealing Ainosuke’s heart and threatening the fragile balance Tadashi has worked so hard to maintain. After all these years, has he finally reached his breaking point?]
Prologue for this fic went up today! This is the Tadaai love triangle/Kiriko revenge arc of my dreams and I hope y’all enjoy it too. Smutty chapter 2 will be coming next week <3
Chapter 1: Vulgar Bible
Chapter 2: Master and Servant
Chapter 3: In A Gadda Da Vida
Chapter 4: Thankless
Chapter 5: Aperitif
Looking around, Reki can’t imagine not wanting to be a part of something like this. For months before he met Oka, he was desperate for even one person to talk about skating with. Here, he’s surrounded by dozens of people with pins and boards, and there are even more scattered along the course that winds down the mountainside and in the factory below. It’s an entire world he never knew about. The graffiti, the glitz, the excited shouting, the clack of wheels against concrete as people kickflip and bigspin and compete to see who can do the highest Ollie.
It’s everything he ever dreamed of. He could stay here for hours, taking it all in. He had no idea there were even this many skaters in Okinawa. Absently, he wonders if he recognizes any of them from the park he usually goes to after school.
Oka is right. It’s a skater’s paradise.
My piece for the SK8 Bang! I chose to write about my thoughts on how Reki met Oka, started working at Dope Sketch, and joined S. There’s a little unrequited OkaReki in it. My partner was LunaNoctuArts, who drew the scene where Reki is watching Joe skate at Crazy Rock for the first time!
Here it is, the fifth and final chapter of Some Kind of Disaster: “Favorite Place.”
Writing this was such a roller coaster, and in the end I’m so happy where it ended. It’s bitter, it’s sweet, it’s spicy, and it’s impossibly tender. Featuring Kaoru’s dick piercings and Kojiro’s determination to love him no matter what. I really hope you guys like it. <3
Here’s the preview of my piece for @adamdirtzine!! The Zine is finally up for preorder at 🌟https://dirtzine.bigcartel.com/ 🌟
In addition to a ton of awesome art and fic (including mine! I’m still in shock!) there’s also some really fantastic merch up for sale. Do yourselves a favor and snag a copy!
