Today the Department of Awesome Natural Wonders is exploring 30 million-year-old limestone formations inside the caves of the North Island of New Zealand where Arachnocampa luminosa, a species of bioluminescent gnat larva, also known as glowworms, turn the underground chambers into a twinkling wonderland. Local photographer Joseph Michael took a fantastic series of long-exposure photos of this dazzling spectacle entitled Luminosity. The long-exposures enhance the radiance of the glowworms, which is primarily produced by the females in effort to find mates.
