COMICS WIP - Yondu Pages 17 - 20, Desendi Page 53 

Here are the layout sketches for the next batch of Yondu: Junk! Pages ((Ignore that page 19 and 20 are out of order lol)). If you can understand what’s going on in them, GOOD FOR YOU! These are basically just enlarged thumbnails, to be cleaned up later. 

The inks for the Desendi page that I should’ve finished weeks ago, haha... stupid sickness got in the way, but definitely am going to finish this before I leave town for Thanksgiving.

WIP Pages- Yondu Page 16 and Desendi Page 53

Hi guys! Time for a new WIP post. I actually had nothing to show last week due to big life stuff (which is still kind of going on, but I’m less stressed about it now than I was haha). So here’s some stuff and hopefully I’ll get them pages done in time for y’all to get an early Friday page. 

Yondu page 16 has been in Limbo for a bit because it was lower in the priority ladder than some other stuff I’ve been noodling with, but it’s the last page in the next 4-page-bunch I was gonna post on my main, so I figured “might as well just tackle it now.” Look at that magnificent background colorblocking that I need to spend some time rendering out. Probably an hour left of work on this thing before it can be posted in its glory. 

((Tbh, part of why I’ve been frittering on good ol’ Yondiddles here is because I’ve been trying to figure out how to insert “I would do anything for love”, which is the song that was playing on the radio when Yondu entered the store. But I figured that I’ll plan it out properly in the next 4-page batch))

Desendi Page 53 in its rough sketch phase. I’ve been having some trouble w/ inking lately; definitely having a “nothing is looking the way I want it to” phase ...but getting a webcomic out there is more important to me than it looking perfect. ...I’m planning on going back to all these pages for edits in the future anyway haha

Anyway, next post will probably be Illustration WIPs, and maybe some other sketches that I haven’t posted anywhere! I’m still trying to figure out what else I can post here apart from comic page WIPs. Want to create good content.

Apologies for the silence on this Blog

There have been a lot of really important life things going on that made it difficult for me to find time to work on the things I need to work on, but I’m determined to get back on track with a little adjustment. 

But that was what this blog was about anyway! Figuring out what my output can be, and finding the pain points so that when launch happens I can have a better idea of how to approach things. So in my failure, I’ve learned a bit.

Early Page - Desendi Chapter 1 Page 51

I actually finished this page yesterday and didn’t post it because it was late! But here’s page 51. 

I’m going to be out of town this weekend, but I’m going to try and get some Yondu done tonight...I’ve had to put that one down for a second to deal w/ some stuff over here, but it’s all good.

Comic WIP - Desendi Page 51

I haven’t had the time to work on Yondu much since last week, so just Desendi this time! I’m excited to be back into dialogue scenes with this comic; spent so much time doing fight scenes, which are fun in their own way, but characters interacting is my favorite thing. 

Also included a small process gif, going from quick layout sketch to inks. Enjoy!

Desendi: Thank you - Composition planning process

Here’s a quick gif showing off the laying out process for a thank you illustration I’m creating for the people who have been reading Desendi so far. This is only the first part of the process, before I really draw or render anything, starting with my really quick terrible thumbnail and ending with me finally starting to Sketch Odessa onto her place on the wagon. 

Steps illustrated here: 

Quick thumbnail that I had drawn--originally it was relatively small and I blew it up to the document size I wanted to draw at.

Divided the canvas into 3rds and moved some things around to make sure that: 1) all points of interest rested on a vertical third, 2) that each horizontal third had some visual interest in it. You can see I added those ducks into the piece in order to do that. Which I dig, bc it added a little more of a story aspect. 

I pulled the scene back a little bit to give the composition a little more space. I also then decided to divide up the lower 2/3rds into its own thirds, since the top part of the composition is taken up by the words. Ended up shifting some stuff around to work with that. 

Determined the horizon line and added perspective grids to work off of.

Quick sketched in a more solid idea of the surroundings. These will def be cleaned up. 

Tried to create a value heirarchy really quickly. This won’t be used until coloring later, but I wanted to establish it to determine whether or not I wanted to make any drafting changes before starting. 

Turned off the value map, started cleanin up Odessa’s figure.

Monthly Illustration WIP - Final Fantasy IX: HP and MP Restored

(Incomprehensible) Thumbs and The start of this illustration’s clean up sketch. 

I wanted to do something w/ the prompt that included all of your party members, since the relationship between everyone is such a vital part in JRPGs. I eventually settled on the idea of them setting up camp. It’s something that presumably happened a lot (it’s why we have tents!), but that we only got to see a couple times in the game. 

They’re super hard to understand since my thumbnails are usually just for me to see, but the ideas I had played with in this theme were (Left to Right, Top to Bottom):

A small diagram of how the entire gang squeezes into a tent

The sleeping group with Zidane on watch

The group setting up camp

I liked all of them for different reasons, but the image of the group Tetrising themselves into a tent, as well as how to show their personalities and dynamics through their poses and placements seemed like such a fun idea. My favorite little thing is Steiner basically creating a stiff wall between Zidane and Dagger.

Early Page - Desendi Chapter 1 Page 49

Only early by about 12 hours, but here you go anyway haha 

Whenever I work on Desendi I’m halfway between wishing I could spend more time on each page and also wanting to focus on getting the story out as fast as possible. Since this thing is supposed to span 18 chapters or so and will take a lot of time to get to the end of @_@  

I’m sure i’ll go back and fix things in the future haha

Early Page - Junk Page 14

Comics work in progress: Desendi Page 49 and Junk Pages 15 and 16

Thought I’d give you a glimpse of what my initial sketches look like for both comics, as well as where I am with Page 15 of Junk, which I showed you mid-ink last week. 

The look of the current Desendi page is just about how clean the sketches get before I start inking on top of it. I clean the inks up as I work on them, as mentioned last week. Yondu’s sketches get quite a bit more attention though, since my inks are a lot cleaner with that comic and I’m trying to be a bit more consistent with how the characters are drawn. I guess the Desendi characters are just much closer to my default style, so it’s easier for me to work off of much rougher sketches. 

Yondu Page 15 is in the process of being colored. I’ve since flatted it and started working on rendering everything since this screenshot was taken, but I think this is an interesting stage to show it at all the same. You can see how I started laying out the background color scheme (picked from a palette I’d set up at the beginning). I’ll smooth that out later. 

Yondu Page 16 is in what is little more than a layout sketch stage. This is the roughest of rough sketches, and I’ll be doing a somewhat cleaner work up on top of it that will eventually go into inking. 

Later this week I’ll have Yondu Page 14 up early and (hopefully!) Desendi Page 49 early too. Next update I might show a screenshot of what my thumbnails and planning for both projects look like. We’ll see!

This isn’t tied to any of the comics or the FFIX Illustration I’m doing for all of you, but I thought it’d be cool to show off some of the work I’ve been noodling with on my free time. This is a location illustration/concept for another project I might tackle in the future. It’s still not done--it needs a LOT of massaging and rendering--but I thought it’d be really cool to show how much work I put in before I even start coloring.

Yondu: Junk, Page 13 (Early Page) 

I usually post Junk in 4 page chunks, but y’all are getting individual pages on this blog. Calooh, Calay. 

There are 24 pages planned for this comic, so we’re more than halfway done. Considering making a quick cover for it and putting it together as a PDF and having it available for free download/easy read later. Considering doing that for all the short story comics I make in the future. Just for fun! 

If I had a Desendi page to show today I would show it, but I’m currently behind because of being under the weather for the past couple weeks (there are a series of different but similar plagues going around the studio lately, unfortunately, and I seem to be set to catch them all. Still working on stuff, just at a slower pace).

Comics Work in Progress: Junk page 15 and Desendi Chapter 1, Page 48

Y’all caught me at the inking stages for both of these! I approach inking a bit differently between the two comics--Junk’s inking is done w/ a “dry brush” so it has a little pencil texture to it, and tends to be cleaner than Desendi, which I approach with a G-pen brush in Manga Studio and kind of carve out the details from the sketch. 

((I might do a mini video recording a section of inking Desendi to show what I’m talking about. Hmmm...!))

As you can see I don’t get particularly clean w/ the sketches when I draw... Which is probably bad practice, but I think it maintains more of the energy of what I would’ve put into the sketches anyway. I actually started doing it this way after watching the Fujita Kazuhiro episode of Urasawa Naoki no Manben (a japanese program where you watch a working mangaka through their creative process while Naoki Urasawa interviews them). You can watch it [here] if you’re interested; it’s a super inspiring program in general! 

I’m pretty behind on Desendi right now due to a weekend lying in bed sick, but I’m pretty confident in my ability to get the page done by the end of the week. I’ll be posting a finished Junk page or 2 in a few days, at the very least.
