I am a writer mama, pet lover, poet, teacher, seeking balance through walks with my trusty companion Maynard. We adopted Maynard from a nearby shelter three years ago. From Maynard's perspective, as a shelter dog, he had a few hurdles to leap in finding his forever family. First, he was not a puppy. He was two at the time we adopted him. Second, he is a black dog. There is some talk out there that black dogs spend much more time in shelters because they are harder to adopt. Finally, he had been adopted once and brought back. When my husband and I walked into the shelter the day after my 43rd birthday looking for the right companion to fill a void left by our golden retriever, Maggie, who passed away, we had no preconceived notions of what kind of dog we were looking for. We kept our hearts and minds open and Maynard sauntered right in. These posts are a companion to a book project I am working that delves into meditations on walks I take with Maynard and how those walks make me see how simply and beautifully dogs view and take in the world and how one shelter dog can lead me to finding balance in my own crazy life.
