Our sister radio program Los 15 Principales will be broadcasting a special program from 3-6pm central time on Crescent City Radio this Friday, October 24, live from the Country Fair in the Peace Quad at Loyola University New Orleans.

The special broadcast is called Se Nos Viene El Mundo, or in English, The World is Coming Upon Us. We will be broadcasting the top 15 most popular Spanish-language songs of the moment, music from every corner of the world and presentations from the Casa Samba Brazilian Drum & Dance Troop from New Orleans.

I, Santiago Caicedo, will be hosting the live program starting at 3:00 p.m. central time on Crescent City Radio until 6:00 p.m. Plus, the show´s in-studio camera will be outside at the fair so that you can enjoy Casa Samba´s performances from anywhere in the world.

This will be the third time Los 15 Principales will be broadcasting the Country Fair in partnership with Loyola´s Center for International Education and the International Student Association.

The fair is free to attend and there will be several tables representing a variety of countries with their respective foods and traditional articles. The tables are organized by students from Loyola that have been previously registered with the fair.

The fair will officially run between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., but the broadcast will go from 3 to 6 p.m. In case of rain, the fair will be held in the St. Charles Room in the Danna Center.

Come and say howdy! I, along with my colleagues from Crescent City Radio, will be at the fair. There will be food, international music and samba performances. We will be using the hashtag #SeNosVieneElMundo on all of Los 15 Principales´ and Le Croissant´s social media.

New Orleans Freaks Out, Fourth Hour of Today is Blacked Out

It appears many people in New Orleans do have a lot of time on their hands to watch the Fourth Hour on the Today Show on NBC, hosted by Kathy Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, a part of the morning show typically known for its wine-induced girl chatter and its spontaneous segments.

It also appears that people in New Orleans really care about their people. You know, their homies. But when local NBC affiliate WDSU-TV blacked out the Today Show´s fourth hour at 10 a.m. central time, in which local WWL-TV anchor Karen Swenson was a guest co-host, viewers went mad crazy when they saw an episode of Queen Latifah´s talk show air instead.

Viewers began to write hundreds of comments on WDSU´s Facebook page expressing their displeasure relating to the station´s blackout. Some who commented online said they would no longer watch the station and would unlike the page.

Post by Niki Pastorek Fuller. Karen Swensen and Hoda Kotb were both colleagues at WWL-TV, a CBS affiliate in New Orleans, during the 1990s. On Friday morning´s Kathy Lee and Hoda hour, Swensen was on the show with Kotb as a guest host, which implies Swensen was on the Today Show with hosting duties. On the segment, both Swensen and Kotb shared how they both became best friends while working at WWL-TV.

WDSU issued a statement on their Facebook page stating that WDSU "does not enable" airing a competing local station´s anchor in the role of host on WDSU citing the decision as "a longstanding practice."

Editor´s Note: With the recent opening ceremony on July 12 and the first games of the FIFA World Cup in Brazil this week, freelance journalist Ángela Marisa Hernández Agüero shares with us her countdown of the five best current and past World Cup songs and tells us why.

This was the song in 2006 and it brings wonderful memories of the summer I spent in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. My house was still under construction and all we had was a mattress and a small TV, which is how I watched the 2006 World Cup.

The exhibit includes representations of studio techniques including glass blowing and casting. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was parodied on the Saturday, March 12 "Saturday Night Live" episode on NBC.

The parody showed the Louisiana Republican governor, played by SNL´s Nasim Pedrad, at the Coachella music festival wearing glow sticks along with other fellow party members played by the cast of SNL.

French Quarter, Strawberry Fests: April 12 and 13, McCartney Concert June 17

The Vieux Carre is Festival

When we can't go to Jazz Fest or Voodoo, we envy those who do. But then again, there is a festival every April that is free - yes, free - and in the French Quarter. On Thursday, April 10, and until this Sunday, April 13, the 31st annual French Quarter Festival has taken over the streets of the Vieux Carre from Bourbon to the river and from Canal to the Old US Mint with four days of live free music on 21 stages with performances by 1,400 musicians.

The festival has stages in Jackson Square, the riverfront Woldenberg Park and at the Old US Mint, along with smaller acts around the French Quarter.

The French Quarter Festival has food from local vendors, expanded childrens´ activities and panel discussions at the old mint. The New Orleans Film Festival will be screenings documentaries at La Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carre.

The biggest headliner for this year´s festival will be the Friday night performance by Dr. John and the Night Trippers, who haven't performed at the festival since 1987.

The festival will include many other Louisiana music genres like gospel, traditional jazz, zydeco, brass band and funk.

Many festival activities will happen between 11:00 in the morning until nine at night on Saturday and until seven at night on Sunday. In the evenings, many activities will be centered around the Woldenberg Park and the Bienville Statue.

Strawberry Everything in Ponchatoula

Also this weekend, head outside the city and go to Ponchatoula for the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival. The festival begins today Friday, April 11 and continues until Sunday, April 13.

There will be a parade, vendors selling dishes using strawberries, strawberry eating contests and a strawberry bake-off  The strawberry festival will take place in Ponchatoula’s downtown Memorial Park. More information at lastrawberryfestival.com.

Paul McCartney will be "Out There"

As part of Sir Paul McCartney´s “Out There” tour, the former Beatles band member is scheduled to be in New Orleans to perform at the Smoothie King Center on June 17, according to his web site.

New Orleans is the first stop of only four North American dates listed so far with performances elsewhere in our hemisphere during the spring and summer, in Uruguay, Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Costa Rica. Then in May, McCartney will be in Japan and South Korea.

Tickets for the New Orleans show went on sale for American Express cardmembers on Thursday, April 10 at 10 in the morning through Sunday, April 13 at 10 a.m. The general public will be able to purchase tickets, ranging from $27.50 to $250 plus service charges on Monday, April 14 at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster.

This will be the fourth time Paul McCartney has performed in New Orleans in his entire career. He first came to the Crescent City in 1964 with the Beatles where they performed at the now Tad Gormley Stadium in City Park.

Loyola Talent at Festival, Emphasizing Awareness of a Radio Station

Since coming online in spring 2008, Crescent City Radio, Loyola University New Orleans' student-run internet radio station has never held a major event - until recently. The station organized, along with local and university organizations and food trucks to provide local talent, particularly Loyola musical talent, with a platform to perform their music in a one-day festival with two stages.

The first ever Fools of April Music Festival was held Sunday, April 6 at the university's main campus. Even with rain in the forecast, festival organizers moved stages inside a parking garage and the student center.

"Considering the weather issues, a lot of people still came out," said station manager and festival organizer Emily Hardy. "I did a head count and there were at least 120 people," said Hardy.

A food truck even showed up noticing the festival was going on. "That one was a surprise, we didn't know that one was coming," said Hardy.

According to the station's promotions director Libby Donelley, the festival's purpose was also to make students aware of the station as a resource.

"We were able to put this festival on and [students] can be part of this festival whether it´s playing [music] or working the sound," said Donnelley.

Student organizations, such as one representing graphic design students, asked the festival if they could have a table where they could sell pin buttons designed with images and materials. Loyola student graphic designers created the festival's image and poster.

Daniel Bourgeois, a Loyola student attending the festival, said that he has seen many of the bands perform elsewhere. "It's a small school. It's different when you're setting up for your buddies to play for all of these random people that show up, it's cool," said Bourgeois. When asked if it was strange seeing many of the student bands perform at Loyola and not an outside venue, Bourgeois said, "Loyola is a bunch of f*****g hipsters. So [Loyola] is a venue in its self."

The last band to perform at the festival was Dirty Bourbon River Show. Many of the group's members are Loyola alumni. "I've always wanted to come back and play. It's quite a pleasure to come here and do the damn thing," said one the Bourbon band members.

Festival organizers hope that the Fools of April Music Festival is back next year.

"Curtains," Mardi Gras Indians, Aurora Neland: March 29-31

“Curtains,” a musical whodunit, will be featured at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts. Matinee and evening shows will be performed throughout this weekend. General admission is $15 Mardi Gras Super Sunday will take place Sunday, March 30. The parade starts at noon at Washington and La Salle streets. The Mardi Gras Indians will once again dress in their feathers and suits and take to the streets.
