I get in theory why people complain about het ships or whatever, I get wanting to watch queer media I really do, but I guess where y’all lose me is like. I saw some asshole on a post about Sinners complaining it was “hetslop”—this person was specifically doing so while also claiming Remmick was a queer character and thus they were justified in caring more about him than the Black protagonists. which is a whole other disgusting can of worms that has been well addressed by others at this point. but even in the absence of that part of the argument, like, no, i actually don’t think that a hunger for queer stories is an especially good excuse to deride and dismiss a piece of landmark Black filmmaking, especially as a non-Black person. I have a post that’s been going around encouraging folks to engage with more Native stories and characters, and I had someone come onto that post saying in the tags that they’d need these stories to be queer in order to care. and I just think that, you know, sucks! like obviously as a queer Native I also want to see more of those stories too. but idk how else to put it other than to say that Black people and people of color shouldn’t have to be like you in order for you to care about our narratives and experiences. and I think some of y’all are using this disdain for heterosexuality as a cover for your unexamined racial biases. it’s not okay to be racist to people just because those people happen to be straight, and you continue to be white before you are queer.

on an even more basic level than that, also, I simply just think some of y’all NEED to learn how to interact with media and storytelling without ships and fandom in mind. like if not being able to write fic about two men kissing is genuinely going to be a dealbreaker for you I think that’s actually something you need to work on within yourself because at that point I think you’re no longer really interacting with art and themes and narrative so much as just kind of playing with toys. which is, like, fine I guess. have fun. but it wouldn’t kill you to disengage from that from time to time. especially if would allow you to actually appreciate rich and deeply moving cultural stories from communities of color that you desperately need to learn how to see as human

i’ve gotten tons of asks similar to this and this is the only one i’m going to answer re: that post, i’ll be deleting all the others (including the ones that agree with me), i don’t think it’s worth it for me to talk about this anymore. i have discovered that even on the additional post where i complained about people misinterpreting the initial post, people are *still* reblogging it acting as if i’m saying the exact thing that post is saying i didn’t say. there’s absolutely nothing productive about engaging with people in good faith when this is what’s happening. no clarification will ever be enough.

That said, out of frustration and one last likely misguided attempt at understanding, here’s my final “clarification”: i made the initial post re: women, disordered eating, and body size late at night in a few seconds, assuming only my small group of mutuals (people who WOULD take me in good faith and get what i was gesturing at) would read and care about it. it is worded incredibly imprecisely, and i worded it for rhetorical impact, not to make a scientific claim. i did not word it knowing it would spread the way it has. it’s not a “hypothesis”, it’s me waving at two, i think, pretty uncontroversial things (one, the familial, social, and cultural pressure among women and girls to be thin and restrict their diet; two, the fact that malnutrition and heavy caloric restriction in children can and does influence adult body shape and size) and combining them into “the encouragement of disordered eating through diet culture, fatphobia, and ableism (among other things) likely influences, on a society-wide level, what we see as ‘normal’ in women’s bodies.”

i was not saying short people only exist because of sexism, i was not saying everyone would be tall if they avoided disordered eating habits, i was not talking about only eating disorders (disordered eating is a broader term that encompasses more than what would be diagnosed as an eating disorder), i was not saying this only impacts women, i was not saying this only impacts cis women, i was not saying this is true for all women, i was not saying that all population-level physical differences between afab and amab people would disappear if they ate the same, i was not saying a scientific claim or gesturing at some unmentioned study. i was doing a bit of off-the-cuff feminist theorizing among an audience i assumed would be restricted to my friends and good acquaintances. that’s it. the end.

i think the only kind of codywan i find realistic enough to be interested in is GLACIAL slow burn. they take like three weeks to fit together like cogs made to turn each other and they spend the rest of the three years of the war so instinctually and comfortably in each others space that they forget they haven’t known each other for their entire lives. they act beyond like a married couple and neither one of them ever notices it whatsoever. everyone but them can see it.

obi wan calls cody dear all the time, is always getting him new foods and drinks to try, and even teaches him how to perform basic lightsaber moves since he ends up with the thing so often and might as well know how to use it if the need ever arises, and and neither of them thinks a thing of it. cody mentally catalogues and ranks all of obi wans favorite teas and how to make them, comes to be able to tell when obi wan needs food or rest or a medic and knows just what to say to get him to attend to it, and gets that godforsaken lightsaber clip on his belt and its just another day for them. and when people see all of this and point out that evidence is adding up to either one of them they both are completely genuine when they say, i have no idea what you’re talking about. no one else is doing these things with their general or marshal commander? laughable idea.

i think they would need that post war break in some form whether it follows order 66 or its an AU where it somehow is averted. i think they would need to be faced with the idea of living lives much further removed from each other to finally see it for themselves. and of course for so many reasons both of them would just bury it deep down in the absolute recesses of their heart and mind because it doesn’t matter, and it never has. and they would need to be literally forced back together to be able to address it. and things would have to be different. but once they do address it, it’s like… there’s no real nervousness. there’s hesitance, because once it’s said it can’t be unsaid, but. it’s just putting words to something that’s already there, that’s been there since the beginning. it just feels natural, not even like a next step, just… how it’s supposed to be. with each of them by the other’s side, whatever may come.

and i think it would work because i think they both truly would hold the other to their obligations and responsibilities. they love each other but they’re both level headed, especially with each other, so it follows that they are about each other, too. in the same way that it always had to be that anakin and padme would break the rules and put each other first when they shouldn’t and it causes problems, obi wan and cody both know that the other would be so irreversibly shattered and disappointed to be put over the greater good that they both keep their heads. their relationship is built on understanding and mutual respect for the way the other is committed to all those around them. there’s no jealousy, no possessiveness, no need to prove anything or have anything proven to them, because they’ve always come back to each other before and they always will if it’s right

like, okay, speaking as a musician and an autistic woman: there are certain sounds that I am simply not going to enjoy, right? I don't like music that's too heavy on the high end, because it sounds shrill. I've listened to music that had so much Stuff Going On at once that is literally made me feel sick from overstimulation. But that doesn't mean that music shouldn't exist, or that the creators should make a hypothetical pared-down remix just so I specifically can enjoy it. There's other music out there which I like! It's fine! I'll listen to that instead!!

and, idk, it bothers me because there are a lot of legitimate accessibility features that I think every game should have. there's no reason for a puzzle game to be inaccessible to colorblind people. there's no reason that an execution-heavy game shouldn't allow you to set up alternate control schemes. but the solution is not "make the puzzles easier" or "make the bosses do less damage" any more than the "solution" to a complicated piece of writing is "create a version where everything is written using simpler language." idk! it just feels like a refusal to engage with art as art and not Product.

So yeah there are people who genuinely believe that "accessibility" means only making things that are unchallenging. This is incorrect in any form of art, whether it's popular media or something more traditional. Accessibility in writing means printing in larger text, use of readable fonts and formatting, translation into Braille, and recording in clear audio. Accessibility in gaming should mean colorblindness filters, toggles to deactivate strobing in cutscenes and environments, scalable text, custom keymapping, and the ability to modify graphical settings including framerates, motion blur, fixed versus free camera, and so on.

To truly engage with any form of art, one must at least be willing to be challenged. To claim that challenge is by its nature inaccessibility is at best ignorance to the purpose of accessibility, and at worst a gross infantilization of people like me who actually have disability-related struggles that could be mitigated with some fairly basic control of settings.
