so embarrassing to watch yourself become obsessed with a character that feels tailor made for you specifically to become obsessed with. feels like i fell into a trap made just for me. like damn they got me. those are all the things i like and go crazy for

researching the history of education in japan and learning that, preâMeiji Restoration, peasants/commoners formed their own schools to become educated because it was the best way of fighting tax fraud.
That is, when an official told you, a rice farmer, that you owed more taxes than you really did, it was very useful if you were good enough at math to know he was lying (and could prove it) and if you were good enough at writing to write a letter to your government defending your case.
all of which is to say it's crazy that mega-corporations are now pushing education to be "what if you paid us whatever we tell you to for the rest of your life and never do math or write anything ever again"

My dear lgbt+ kids,Â
If your parents didnât let you have toy cars or dolls as a kid, you can just buy them for yourself as an adult.Â
Iâd say here that âthis post was requestedâ but Iâd be lying - what was requested was a letter on grieving the childhood experiences you didnât get to have because youâre trans, and I guess that the piece of advice above may seem overly simplistic or even dismissive to you: of course you canât just âcatch upâ on childhood as an adult.
You already had the childhood you had, it already shaped you. Plus, your feelings and your ways of thinking are more developed now than they were at 3 or 5 or 10 years old. Which is obviously a good thing in general but also means you will interact with that toy car or that doll differently now. So I really canât tell you to just replace your actual childhood with some play-pretend childhood done in adulthood. Thatâd be silly for me to recommend and for you to expect from yourself.Â
And yet - my main advice would be to get that toy car or that doll now.Â
Sure, we could talk about how gendered toys arenât necessary to be a real man or a real woman. We could talk about how there are cis boys who never played with cars and cis girls who never played with dolls either. We could talk about how your family and the choices they made when you were young do not define you. We could counter that feeling of grief with logical arguments.Â
But grief isnât easily soothed by logic. Grief deserves softness. Grief deserves âI see you and I give you space to existâ. Grief deserves care.Â
This isnât even a trans-specific problem: there are many people who, for various reasons, grieve the child they didnât get to be. Kids who grew up in chaotic circumstances. Kids who grew up in emotionally distant families. Kids who were severely ill for long periods. So many examples I canât even list them all. Grieving the childhood you missed out on feels so specific but itâs unfortunately quite common. Youâre in good company. All these people understand, from their own unique angle, the grief you experience and that you canât just easily talk yourself out of it.Â
But what they, and you, can do is to treat the wound gently. So, buy that toy - not to replace or make up for your actual childhood, but out of respect and love for yourself. Buy it to tell yourself âHey, Iâm sorry you didnât get this back then, you deserved it then and you still deserve it nowâ.Â
With all my love, Your Tumblr DadÂ
