Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”

So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”

Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.

Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

Has anyone studied whether plants are affected by light pollution?

Yes, actually, and they 100% can be! This 2026 study, for example, focuses on Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) affecting White Dogwood and Common Beech trees. The authors found that ALAN significantly affects the trees’ light dependent phase of photosynthesis. The trees responded differently physicall, but both were negative. They also demonstrated that the effects are “dose” specific, or dependent on how much light exposure has occurred.

This study from 2025 also indicates that, in urban areas, light pollution is becoming a greater disruptor for growing seasonality than temperature is; which is HUGE considering how prevalent the urban heat island effect is. They found that these effects greatly lengthened the growing season and delaying the projected end dates. This is bad because it also disrupts the life cycles of everything reliant on the plant’s life cycles, such as parasites, feeding insects/animals etc. It can also even lower the amount of available water due to the plants requiring more water in prolonged growth seasons. These systems are dynamic and not in a vacuum.

In conclusion, light pollution and artificial light is a major environmental stressor that gets overlooked. Thank you for making this post to ask a very important question :)

Met a cool dude at a lichen conference a few years back who was brave enough to ride in shotgun for me across the great state of Idaho, and he introduced me to to the gorgeous P. rainierensis. This foliose lichen has a loose, ragged-looking thallus with lobes varying in length from 1.5 cm to 20 cm. The upper surface is a pale blue-gray and dimpled to wrinkly in texture. It produces marginal and occasionally laminal lobules and isidia. The lower surface is pale tan to cream, and dotted with pseudocyphellae (pores through the surface to the middle layer of the lichen thallus). P. rainierensis is native to the old growth, temperate rainforests of the Pacific Northwest of North America. It is rare, and recent reports suggest it is declining. But I am happy to see that lichenologists are working on monitoring it in the wild (and using iNaturalist as one of their tools to do so), and working towards public-private partnerships to protect this awesome dude well into the future. (shout out to my pal Stephen T. Sharrett for his hard work and important contributions leading the way toward a brighter future for this and other imperiled PNW lichens. I wanna be him when I grow up)

My fiance and I (already struggling to keep our phones on) are both going to be going through major surgery sometime in the future, which is a huge deal for a few reasons. The surgeries themselves are both gender affirming and will address serious long-suffered health issues. But we have such severe allergies that hospitals generally cannot feed us full meals without killing us. (ask me more about this, I would love an opportunity to scream about it)

In the past, a week in this hospital has cost us $300 for both of us to get food we can actually prepare and eat in a hospital room. We are looking at some insane upcoming costs, even if our insurance covers everything directly related to the surgery, because it absolutely won't cover the food costs.

oh, and I'm going through a cancer scare, waiting on a biopsy. Just totally separate from all this, so yknow. Sort of bracing for things to get worse.

Hey yall I just wanted to come on here and bring some attention to what’s happening at the detention center (really a concentration camp) Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey. There is a hunger strike going on right now to protest the abhorrent conditions within the camp (allegations of torture, maggots and other bugs in the food, etc) and protests happening outside the camp. ICE is not allowing any politicians to come in (as is their right) to see the conditions of the camp.
