Why I know SoMa is happening (and you should, too).
I realize people love to ship Soul and Maka 69 ways from Saturday, but it’s fairly clear at this point that this series will either end with them together, or else Okubo has pulled a fast one.
Let me lay it out for you.
I could go over the whole evolution of this relationship, but that would be unnecessary since the real turning point is in the book of Eibon arc during which Maka comes to the realization that she can implicitly trust Soul. He is not her womanizing father.
Once this happens, the ship teases go haywire—only I don’t think it’s a tease. It seems meant to show how their relationship is growing closer.
We see the pair walking into a dangerous, unknown situation. Instead of having Soul turn into a weapon, which would seem the logical choice, Maka holds his hand. Why? She realizes the difficulty he faces here and chooses that comfort. Can you remember another instance where they hold hands instead of him becoming a weapon when he clearly should, because I can’t.
Yes, they seem to need physical contact to resonate, but he could be in weapon form or they could hold hands. Instead, they choose to stand in an intimate—one might almost say loving—way. Hmmm… Try to imagine them standing this way early in the series. Nope. Wouldn’t have happened.
After that, on the moon, there is this:
Soul seems pretty distraught that Maka can wield her dad and not him….
Spirit suggests Maka and Soul can do something he and his wife failed at. This was the end game clincher for me, and one people miss. What is it that Maka and Soul can do that Spirit and his ex couldn’t? It can’t be a weapon/meister thing. Maka’s mom not only made him into a death scythe, but into THE Death Scythe, official weapon of Death. As a weapon/meister team they were a spectacular success. It can’t be in defeating an enemy since Maka’s mom isn’t there to try and they haven’t suffered some cataclysmic defeat. No, where Spirit and his ex failed was in love. This is what his daughter and her partner have that they didn’t. Spirit is shipping them hard. What does he see that we don’t?
Do you see this assertion coming from Soul in Chapter 1? Oh sure, he would go. But with this level of conviction? Doubtful.
This is a pretty intimate pose, one I have a hard time seeing between anyone but lovers. We already know there is no necessity for this position here.
So there you have it. Continue to ship whoever you will in your head, but on the page SoMa is blatantly obvious. We see nothing even close between anyone else. The slight flirtation between Maka and Black*Star can’t even approach it, and seems more like Maka teasing than anything. SoMa is happening. If it doesn’t, then we have been seriously, ridiculously played.
