i probably don't get it because i famously Don't Get movies but to me the ending of stay (2005) makes perfect sense. henry was sure he was going to die, so his brain gave him an escape, where that was only true because he was deciding to die. he couldn't escape the guilt of killing his loved ones, so he created a world where it was all his fault. where he set the car on fire with them in it, right? there's definitely some mental health stuff going on with him, and maybe there's an interpretation in which lila's past suicide attempt was really henry's past suicide attempt, but at the point in the story where we meet the real henry letham, i don't think he's suicidal, or at least i don't think that's why he was suicidal in the dream. i think he just needed to feel like he was in control. to feel like dying wasn't just something that was happening to him, but that it was a punishment for his actions that he was choosing to inflict upon himself. he doesn't want to die. but he knows he has to die. so he makes himself into someone who is choosing to die, into someone who can't be rescued no matter how hard the doctor tries. he makes himself impossible to save so that his death is nobody's fault but his own.
