Philip Guston‘s “Untitled,” 1968. 1968 was was a major turning point for Philip. After decades as a leading figure in Abstract Expressionism (known for his “shimmering” patches of color), he became dissatisfied with pure abstraction. This painting represents his move toward a more “reductive” and eventually “figurative” style. Personally, I believe this is a tire-wheel and an automobile fender that is the beginning of the vehicles that would soon transport his hooded passengers to their cartoonish destinations.
