Can you imagine streamer Simon and science teacher Grace? Grace’s students don’t know that they’re dating or live together so Grace often hears his students talk about Simon and what games they really want him to play live (and if Grace suggests them to Simon and Simon plays them then he’s not gonna tell his students. He feels like a spy)

Cut to, one night, Simon’s streaming and he looks to his left to see Grace bringing him some water and food and Simon gets this lovesick look on his face and says “thanks Star.” And the chat are going crazy because “Simon has a partner?!” They hear a man softly telling Simon that he’s welcome and asking what time he’s finishing streaming so he can finish his marking before then so they can actually spend some time with him. (Grace watches Simon’s streams whilst he’s working on lesson planning and stuff)

Simon mumbles something about another hour then he’s “all yours” and Simon goes off screen a bit to kiss Grace as Grace doesn’t like being on camera. What Grace doesn’t know is that some people in chat saw his fox cardigan (like the front bit). Grace leaves the room and chat is going crazy speculating who it could be.

The next day, Grace makes the mistake of wearing his fox cardigan to class because his students who watched the stream last night are freaking out.

Iron Lung, Project Hail Mary and the significance of a name

With the COI and in the SM-13, the only one who knew Simon's name was himself. Simon had to tell them halfway into his defacto suicide trip. People forgot he was a person and didn't try to remember.

People just referred to Simon as the butcher. Rendering his entire identity as this one moment, one mistake. One bad moment with bad timing with Simon in the wrong place. And everything else about him became negatable.

Simon is a scapegoat. And scapegoats dont need a name. They just need to do their job.

But when they- Ava, realizes the name of the man she's sending to his death isn't even known to her. She asks. Then her view of Simon starts to change.

Ava herself is referred to as 'Captain' a lot. Her role defines her. Individuality is sacrificed in a crisis. One must give up the self to support the collective.

When the worst happens, when darkness takes over, we lose ourselves too.

On the Hail Mary, The ship herself, Ilyukhina, and Yao knew who Grace was. Grace was probably regarded as a hero back on Earth like Stratt said he would. His name was probably being said all over the globe. Grace, however, didn't know his name and needed the Ship to say it to remember (in the book, it's his name being said by Stratt in a memory that helps him remember). The ones who would have known died long ago. He doesn't have any inkling of self. Even when he remembers he doesn't call himself Ryland. So detached from his own identity.

And yet the first thing he does when he met Carl was ask his name. He is quick to come up with a name for Rocky, never dwelling on 'the alien' for long. He sees importance in knowing others. He sees value in the identity of others.

The beetles are named too. A humourous refrence to The Beatles. So much love put into this mission. Rocky puts so must gusto into singing his Adrian's name, no matter how many times he has to say it. But grace himself is exempt from this pattern.

Grace probably didn't feel like he was real, or connected to the world at time.

And then, Rocky came along. They worked together. They celebrated together. They risked their lives for the other. Grace finds another creature in this universe that would say his name with love.

They develop a silly but massively important rituals around naming. Tau Ceti E/Adrian. Tauomeba. Xenonite. Love is the motivator behind the naming of the planet Adrian. The other times, it is the passion for science. Which is a type of love on it's own.

This makes me think of a poem by ee cummings. It's titled, 'Maggie and Milly and Molly And May'. Two lines are especially relevant.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)

it's always ourselves we find in the sea.

It's ourselves we find in the environment around us. We leave our mark on things. We leave our mark on people around us. And a name is one of the most important marks of all. That is how we gain recognition. That is how we become real.

To experience love is what allows us to find ourselves.

And sometimes I wonder what would it be like for Simon and Grace to meet each other.

One is abandoned by his universe. Forgotten. Yet, he still harbours a white hot passion to live. With freedom. To live, for himself. As himself.

The other is let go. Pushed into space unwillingly on both sides. Before that he was cast adrift in his life. He had virtually no ties with anyone. But he is loved so intensely by the people around him. He is remembered by everyone but himself.

I wonder, will they learn of the significance of a name.

I SAW "PROJECT HAIL MARY" WITH THE DIRECTORS' COMMENTARY AND HERE'S WHAT I WROTE DOWN

The voice of the Hail Mary was recorded live on set with Ryan so they could react to each other in real time!!

Ryan was so nervous and intimidated by the kids in Grace's class (who were played by children of the cast and crew 🥹)

The dots of astrophage Grace shows his class??? That was done by filming burning steeling wool, inverting it, then PUTTING IT IN BLACK AND WHITE

Ryan didn't know what was going to be in Yáo and Ilyukhina's bags, and they were real photos of the actors. He was told to "remember who these people are" and a lot of the emotions we see from him in that scene were real 🥹

The walk outside the classroom was one of the first scene Sandra and Ryan shot together. Sandra whispered "You wanna race to the bike?" And they DID and they KEPT THE SHOT which is why they're doing that hysterical little speedwalk I- ajdgsjshsj

They purposely emphasized reflections to reflect the themes of the movie. They loved glass, they loved light, they loved reflections.

They called the hardware store "off brand homedepot" LMAO

When talking about the shopping trip they said they wanted to show that "Playfulness and creativity are intertwined" 🥹

Grace's goggles that he uses to find the astrophage in the box in a box are literally made from an iPhone duct taped into makeshift goggles. And the infrared footage of him finding the four dots was actually shot ON an iphone!!!

There's a bright orange sticker that reads "CIVILIAN" on the back of Grace's flight helmet and the directors don't know if thats something they actually do but they found it hilarious

When Grace is shoved in front of the room full of world leaders to explain the astrophage, they said, "One of the many times we demonstate Ryland Grace's social anxiety by having people stare at him" ajdgsjdgsjjs

There was a team called "The Poetry Unit" who's job was just getting beautiful shots. And goddamn did they do a beautiful job. Also I've been talking nonstop about the inherent poetry of space travel since Artemis II launched and this just solidified it for me.

Talking about Daniel Pemberton's masterful soundtrack, they said, "He would not be alone in the soundtrack. In fact, two different planets would be rooting him on." 😭

THAT SCENE ON THE BEACH IN THE DONT GO CRAZY ROOM WHERE SOMEONE IS WALKING TOWARDS HIM??? THATS HIS FUTURE SELF ON ERID. (They also said "we dont know how they let us keep this in the movie" which is very funny but im very glad its there)

The scene where he catches the canister took ELEVEN takes for him to actually successfully catch it and everyone on set cheered

They call song that plays (or maybe they're were referring to the scene? A little unclear) when Rocky's ship starts spinning "The Gravity Tango" because "as Rocky spins his ship, its an invitation to dance."

They had 3 ramen ship models on set and every single one broke at some point 😆

Some of Ryan's reactions to Rocky copying his dances are his live reactions of being "absolutely delighted" by the puppet team

Rocky is 200 years old!!

In the scene where Rocky is bossing Grace around telling him how to build his enclosure and Armando and Mary get involved, one of the directors says, "Mary, Rocky, Armando- he's [Grace] creating his space family!"

When Stratt sings "Remember everything will be alright" it is confirmed she is singing it directly to Grace. They talk alot about how much she cares and loves but cannot care and cannot love, and how much she believes in him. How much she sees in him. I just. Man. Wow. They also say that this scene is a bit of an exchange. Grace is daring her, "Come, be human with us." And Stratt is accepting that dare, as much as she can.

I have seen this film three times (counting today) and until the directors' commentary pointed it out, I didn't notice the little HEEL CLICK Grace does when he comes in from collecting the astrophage coming from and going to Adrian AHHHH

"I love how on the spectrum Rocky is" CANON AUTISTIC ROCKY also the director who said this is a parent of a child on the spectrum which makes this all the more authentic and heartwarming 🥹

A lot of the scene where its revealed to Grace that he is the back up is improvised by everyone at the table

After Rocky saves Grace. The little model of himself that Rocky made that he holds up. The little item he holds up beside it? Thats a model of the device that opens the orb that caught the Taumeoba. Its Rocky telling Grace to finish the job. I'm in tears.

"As Rocky wakes up, the lights turn on, the movie warms up. Its like day breaking." 😭😭😭

They built the flexible panel on Rocky's ball MAINLY so Grace could give him the Earth ball akdhjshd

I love the fics where Rocky is described as an asocial outcast who's only got his job (and Adrian) going for him because it puts into perspective that no, not all Eridians are that rude, it's just Rocky being Rocky.

And then it's really funny to think of like Eridian scientists getting mad and embarrassed as hellll that it was ROCKY of all people to make first contact.

In contrast to everyone saying how perfect it is that Grace, a teacher, is the one to make first contact. Meanwhile the people who knew Rocky are doing damage control for how badly he may have fucked up Erid's representation 😭

Fighting Anti-Trans legislation in Australia

To date, Australia has been one of the few western nations not to suffer the indignancy of legislation designed to make life for trans people a living hell. In the US, and in the UK, the introduction of laws that have cracked down on the right of existence of trans people, restricted our ability to use public facilities, and made us liable to discrimination and brutality on a scale that has not been seen for eighty years.

This week, in the Australian senate, a private member’s bill was introduced by a member of the Nationals Party. This bill aims to introduce a binary definition of sex, and to exclude transgender Australians from using bathrooms that align with their gender, from competing in gendered sports, and open us up to harassment by excluding us from the protection of the Sex Discrimination Act.

This act has been met so far with a resounding lack of effective defence by our elected officials who would otherwise support us. Labour and our progressive independent parties have been floundering and refusing to take action while right wing fascists like Senator Mikalea Cash have been able to walk right over them by spouting familiar rhetoric like “define a woman” and “biological males are not woman”.

It is vital that we fight back, and that transphobia is not allowed a new footing in yet another nation.

I wonder if the reason why Spoke is often held to higher standards than anyone else on Unstable (including the villains that caused the deaths of thousands, committed mass kidnappings, coerced thousands into joining their criminal enterprise, or abused him in particular) is because he's an unreliable narrator in a way people aren't used to.

Spoke has a tendency to hold onto guilt far more than any of the other protagonists. He sees himself as worse than he actually factually is. And he claims often to be evil (examples: he had a whole speech trying to convince Jumper not to work with him even when their goals aligned because he saw himself as not good enough, he tried to point out to Jamato that what he was doing was fucked up by saying "you're just as evil as me" when Jamato is just objectively so much worse) and holds himself accountable for things he wouldn't judge others for (see him not getting upset at all at Vix for having made escape plans that didn't include him despite having thought it important to clarify every time that even if he escaped he'd come back to free everyone, or even his only judging Jamato for his continuos use of exploits only after finding the water in the Nether despite having been made to feel like a monster for ever exploiting in the first place himself).

Usually, unreliable narrators are more so used to minimize the flaws of a character's actions, not to enhance them. And I wonder if this twist to the norm is what throws people off so much. If most don't notice the unreliability of his narration at all. Or if they notice it, but somehow mistake it for minimizing instead.

So what has Spoke done? He killed Rose and a bunch of Jumper's spies. All relatively innocent characters that didn't need to die.

What is one prominent character that hasn't?

He stole. Like literally everyone else. Lied and manipulated, like literally everyone else.

He threatened to blow up Capital City. Wemmbu actually carried through with it and without any reasonable justification for it.

Wemmbu also exploded Highwater, sacrificing thousands for Egg. Flame joined a faction whose stated goal is to kill all the new people (literally murdering immigrants as a solution to systemic problems that existed well before their arrival). And Parrot rushed into opening Spawn when he didn't have food production or safety under control, which led to the deaths of presumably thousands.

And yet the judgment toward them is nowhere near as harsh as it is for the one guy who's done nothing that egregious because they're all standard unreliable narrators. They present themselves better. They see themselves as heroes or as justified in some way...

It's interesting in an odd way
