the absolutely mindbending scale of mark lee wearing a confederate flag with 'virginia' printed on it off duty is basically like this: imagine if yangyang - who as we know grew up in urban germany where he was educated - bizarrely had a history of appropriating jewish/klezmer or romani music which made him famous, then left the group in a shock move to make heavily religious stuff e.g. inspired by martin luther (one of the worst german anti-semites in religious history) only to start walking around meeting people with a swastika shirt that says 'wolfsschanze' meaning the nazi headquarters (much like virginia = capital of the confederacy), later repeating on his side account it was merely a 'vintage item' (which is code for 'SS paraphernalia' in germany) and saying the historic significance was known but at least he didn't wear it on official schedule, which means he was well aware of what the swastika stands for but didn't want himself shown with it publically but he was caught... he would have to face the fact that it's a KNOWN, serious, banned symbol of hate, persecution, torture, eugenics, oppression, aryan race ideology, and enormous suffering behind it, and every german & adult beyond knows exactly what it means, what it caused, who is still using it, in what circles. even if you're not educated, you know what it is. you cannot thrift a swastika casually. and you go to prison if you wear it.

so now we have mark. who's had a high profile career in an endlessly racist industry and hierarchy-loving country (that always goes nuclear when the topic of skin color comes up and thinks it can overcome its own issues and difficult history by putting the boot on whoever they consider despicable or weaker: students, women, poor folks, their own people with a darker skin tone, and especially black people, their favorite target of ridicule and imitation). so we're talking about a famous idol rapper who has a large fanbase among the black community. historically, rap is not supposed to reinforce the racist status quo, it was created as the political opposite: but this guy walks around with the white american emblem of cracking the whip??? it's particularly infuriating because just when you think he's free to break the rules of kpop and take to america for a fresh start, he reinforces the very center of korean and us society: being anti-black, hey, just to look cool or something, it's just a piece of clothing, easy to shrug off. probably thinking oh, this flag makes me such a rebel. on a random tuesday because apparently he can and it apparently has no repercussions. like why. is he in that deep. what's next? yuta has a power trip and paints his house as the rising sun because it's a nice vintage aesthetic and not the flag of imperial japan war atrocities and it's fine because it's privately done? and then he puts out a half-assed scribbling about "we the company don't tolerate this and that"?

and whoever says you can't compare nazi germany to the confederacy skipped history class: southern slavery is what later inspired the 3rd reich with hitler studying and copying the patterns of us-american white supremacy, carried out as a huge caste system down to lynchings and mark knew what it was, he grew up in the US and canada: there is no language or cultural barrier for him to be ignorant of it. hell, i see stans from smaller neutral fandoms who paid closer attention to this over the years say it really is that deep and he's essentially a conservative christian nationalist and it was only a matter of time until he pulled this without giving a damn because he's so deluded and radicalized. and it's not a joke, i wish it was ai. all while twitter, and this happened within hours, censors (!) the debate (guess who runs twitter... the salute guy). i wonder how many more idols with positive to decent PR actually hide their bigotry and how sizable the iceberg of this is. nothing new, truly no hate like christian love: it's widely known the kkk still uses the flag. mark built his whole career on the back of black culture and is now the person in charge of his company and that's his first move. the apology translates as i know but i didn't care when i put it on. what kind of a mess is mark now wtf

I will no longer be supporting mark lee. Not only does the flag go against my personal beliefs and values it goes against my fellow African Americans and ancestors. I refuse to support someone who would wear a flag of such hatred so carelessly and stupidly. There is no kind, respectful, innocent way to wear a flag like that. I also refuse to ever support, believe, and defend any content involving that flag or any other flag or imagery like that when it stands for and represents just pure hatred towards a group of people. If you can still support him after something of this magnitude, do not interact with me or my page. We very clearly have a different set of beliefs and values.
