If you believe that you deserve unconditional love and effects, in a way you get a sense of control.
-If I act I get, if I don’t act I won’t get. If I do this I get this, if I do that I get that. That gives a sense of control. But when you accept the paradigm that there’s not a thing in the world you could do to be loved and you’re only dependent on the goodness of the God, if he loves you if not, his mercy, it fries your brain.
A paradigm where you act somehow and do smth a lot then you feel you earn control over stuff. If you’d be to completely let go of control and allow God’s love you’d prob fry your brain.
Tl;dr - If you can earn love, you can control if you want it or not.
Because he does believe in God but he doesn’t believe he deserves unconditional love because he’s a demonic sinner or smth. Which sounds like simply the other extreme of that.
WHICH! From this pov id like to analyze Montresor today!
He doesn’t only believe that he has to be deserving, but also that he can’t be. There’s no way to be in his grace for him. It’s not that he thinks God doesn’t care about anyone, it’s more likely that he thinks God cares only about a handful:
This could be used to argue against my stance but I’d like to show why I don’t think he means what he says. Firstly I’d like to point out he probably knows that God doesn’t care about the faithful because he was, and is of some type of faith now. But care and save aren’t maybe now the same words. Maybe it’s his way to show simply that a prayer is useless when it’s to a God who in his mind either judges unfairly, or doesn’t gaf.
Because it’s contradictory to what we see later in his biggest fear, aka how he wishes to pray and amend and be good and worthy.
So the idea that - Either he believes that God doesn’t care about anyone Or that God cares only about a few - can also be distilled by thinking how does one and another change his character? And why do I think it’s the second?
If he thought God cared abt no one he’d never try to pray. If he thought he cared about handful, and maybe saved handful, or just cared but didn’t save them but still held them in his grace or love or whatever, then it gives him a lower self esteem to think he isn’t worthy of that.
That’s where the control trap ride to the heavens and above Hail Mary’s missions destination begins to reach one of the peaks, as you can see his whole character is deeply painted by control and possession of others, as he lacked control over himself, and still does.
Montresor was not only manipulated by his Mother with use of religion as the tool but also in his mindset he is controlled by the fact that he cannot earn the right or deserving of being loved, the ways others can in his mind - (probably the idea was implanted by his mother)
His mother, in my opinion, manipulated him into an endless circle of trying to be worthy and loved, only to be denied it at every try.
She places herself in the place of God, and by birth names him ‘Montresor’ (“My treasure” from French) he is the uttermost worthy to her, but no one else. Not even God himself.
He can try, but he has had a demon in him from the birth and he can’t escape it, he may only repent endlessly whilst never being able to actually receive the love, but having to act respectfully and remorseful.
That way, she takes away the positive meaning of us all being “sinners” (Sin from herbrew means to miss the mark. Used in archery. Meant as in to miss the true goal in an act, because we’re predispositioned by stuff like generational trauma, environment etc etc) and makes it into something that means being devil itself in a way, and everyone has a right not to be one to a bigger degree that he could ever attempt to be.
What Montresor seeks is control, because it gives safety. I think!
Then expects from him to perform this meaningless action forever while shunning his natural reactions to it (throwing a fit again my treasure? ((Iirc))) by acting as that itself is abnormal and against God, and not as if God himself put the feeling of anger towards injustice in him. That makes something ugly be born inside of Montresor, not because he had it from birth, but because he was denied not having if, and paradoxically the good in him was shunned whilst encouraged.
Then, act respectfully and remorseful, pretend and lie even though that’s against God again.
His mother prob has attachment issues and traps him into a circle where he’d never leave her. Now idk when Monty left since bro doesn’t remember how to pray, but ts affected him reaaaal bad. Did his mother die? Was he blamed? Did he run? What and what and what?
Idk. But that was my pov analysis. It’s from religious pov so may not align with your beliefs dear reader lol but it’s a pov!
