I've been using the pet poison hotline's poison list cause it has a search function. It also tells you whether something is mildly, moderately, or severely toxic which can be very handy! When you feel discomfort at a marginalized group but feel that expressing so would be wrong, it is very common to come up with "progressive" justifications for non-involvement.

Oh, no, my non-involvement with Black art is because I'm not Black. Black people have gone long enough dealing with appropriation and people like me (non-Black) have taken up enough Black spaces enough. The insidious part of these kinds of justifications is that they are often based on actual issues that minoritized people will openly discuss, but have a convenient "side effect" (really, it's the Whole Point) of allowing you to silo yourself away from groups you are not involved with or comfortable around while patting yourself on the back saying you're actually doing a good thing by segregating your tastes, hobbies, and preferences to an exclusive diet of mainstream hegemonic art

Is it harmful in anyway to have a schizophrenia diagnosis I mean in a legal aspect does it make harder to apply to maybe jobs or apartments or the like? I’m considering getting screened but I’m worried about that kind of thing…

I'm not sure what country you live in, but I'm USAmerican so that's what I know, and I'll answer based on those laws (or you can send another ask to clarify your country).

Employment: your employer or potential employer cannot legally discriminate against you based on a schizophrenia diagnosis. You have no obligation to even tell them. Some places require doctors notes for proof that you have to take time off for an appointment, but even then your personal medical information like a diagnosis does not need to be disclosed.

Housing: your potential landlord/apartment manager cannot legally discriminate against you based on a schizophrenia diagnosis. Once again, you don't even have to tell them.

~other legal stuff I'm adding~

Adoption/Fostering: you do have to disclose any diagnosed mental illness when applying to adopt or foster a child. But a schizophrenia diagnosis doesn't automatically disqualify you. You would just have to prove that you can successfully manage your mental illness, and will be a safe and reliable parent.

Military: the US military will not let you apply if you have any sort of psychotic disorder.

Involuntary care: anyone potentially can be put into psychiatric care involuntarily if they are a threat to themselves or others. Anyone potentially can also be put into a conservatorship if they can't manage their finances or can't make medical decisions. These decisions are not made because of a diagnosis, instead they are made due to the actions of the person and their safety.

Elective procedures/plastic surgery: you do need to disclose your diagnosis when getting elective procedures and plastic surgery. This includes any procedure that is part of transgender healthcare. A schizophrenia diagnosis won't automatically disqualify you, but you will need to be assessed by a psychiatrist who will deem if it is safe for you to carry on with the procedure.

Reblogging this because I see a lot of people discouraging seeking a diagnosis on here, especially for stigmatized disorders like schizophrenia.

For me, my diagnosis has led to more understanding of myself and more accurate and helpful treatments that changed my life for the better.

Also, I just don't tell most people and they would never know. Even when I had to stay in a psych ward a few years back, I told my employer I had to take medical leave and never specified my diagnosis.

There definitely can be downsides, but there also can be benefits and you can choose to not disclose for most things.

idk if I talked about this here but so much of writing decisions are just about, like, rhythm and flow and sound. i spent way longer agonising over a joke about "weird chip flavour in a gay bar" than the joke really warrants because it was like, okay so obviously it would be prawn cocktail but this is an American gay bar, so actually I think it's cheese-and-onion because that's smelly and you don't want your patrons to be eating smelly chips because then they won't want to make out, but again the US does sour-cream-and-onion which is pretty close but really wrecks the flow of what is supposed to be a fun, snappy exchange of jokes because the meter is terrible (SOUR cream and ONion) so I had to go with salt-and-vinegar (SALT and VINegar) instead and that's how just how writing is. the curtains are blue because even though this character would almost definitely have electric green curtains, they need to match the colour of the curséd amulet and maybe there are electric green precious stones? quickly duckduckgo "electric green jewels" "electric green gemstones" "gemstones green scale" hmm okay maybe. but do my readers know this? but we all know about sapphires and shit, right, that's a good classic colour for an amulet, so i guess the curtains are blue now
