We now have a venue - a fantastic pub called the Treehouse. It would be brilliant to see you.
Interested in Croydon Vineyard? Come along on 13 Mar & we'll buy you a drink or two.
It was so much fun last night seeing all the church plant gang again. They are such an amazing group of dedicated and faith-filled people. We talked about what we don't want Croydon Vineyard to be driven by. Biblically our driving motive behind all of church can't be to grow a big church or get enough money to pay Lesley and I full time or to run good events. What Jesus has called us to is mission and discipleship of people. What he is going to give us credit for is not such much growing a church as growing people. And that is something that every Christian is called to. We got bible for that. Here is a diagram that shows some of the key biblical texts about christian living and church, re-arranged to demonstrate how they all point to discipleship being a life-long process of growth towards freedom. (Lesley says it is weird that I've shown the process from right to left rather than left to right. She is probably right.) What I love about the bible texts is that they show some of discipleship is our responsibility (particularly, for a church, devoting ourselves to the boxed bits) and yet the results of our activity are entirely dependent upon Jesus working by His Holy Spirit.
Why I love the Vineyard
In the church planting boot camp that we went on, one of the questions that we got asked was - why do you want to plant a Vineyard church? The emphasis being on why ‘Vineyard’ rather than any other breed of church. The simple answer is that we flipping love it. We love the Vineyard. We love its values, we love its national directors and we love the people who are in it. So this is a shameless rhapsody to our movement - and explains a bit about what we would love our church plant to look like. Here are our 5 favourite things about the Vineyard (in no particular order and probably missing out some crucial ones and not claiming that the Vineyard are the only guys who do this):
The Vineyard truly lives the bible. I’ve loved the bible for years. I’ve probably read it through 10-15 times. But for so long I didn’t live it. I didn’t pray for the sick, I didn’t ask forgiveness of my brother when I’d sinned against him, I didn’t feel overflowing with joy. I knew the stuff but I didn’t do the stuff. In the end that just got a bit boring. I just got frustrated with myself. Then I walked into a Vineyard church and saw men and women of all ages who prayed for their neighbours and had integrity at work and who suffered well and who seemed to exude contentment. These amazing people lived the bible. Not every bit of it - I grant you that - but I could see that parts of the living word of God were really being expressed in their lives.
The Vineyard truly loves people. I knew churches that were very effective organisations. I knew churches whose leaders got stuff done. I knew churches that ran effective ministries or preached good sermons. I also knew churches that didn’t do any of those things. Ever. But what I longed for in my life was love. I was tired of seeing people as objects or as projects or as tasks. I was sick of my own inner tendency to cast aside friends or hide my true self. I knew I was made for more than that. I knew that I was made to love people. And in the Vineyard I found a movement that really loved people. The Vineyard celebrates people, embraces people, listens to people and challenges people. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m fully aware that the Vineyard also has its fair share gits. And people who sometimes act like gits. The kingdom hasn’t come yet so gits will always be among us and will sometimes be counted among their number. But from what I’ve seen, they are the tiny exception to the rule. The Vineyard stretches further than anywhere else I have seen to truly love people and show them their value to God.
The Vineyard truly loves Jesus. Maybe I should have put this first. I bet Ele Mumford would have done. That’s another reason I love the Vineyard but it is not the main thing I’m trying to say here. Now, I know that loving Jesus is pretty much the qualification for being a Christian. Lots of people - and most churches - say they love Jesus. But the love I am talking about is not just a sweet feeling every now and then. In the Vineyard there is such a sense of admiration for Jesus, there is such a sense of aspiration to be like him, there is such a sense of yearning to have him come and walk alongside us every single day that it is utterly inspiring. And this desire isn’t just spoken about - it is actively pursued through sung worship, through seeking to hear the words of Jesus, through waiting for Jesus to pour out his Spirit upon us. Jesus is everywhere in the Vineyard - and that is something I love.
The Vineyard is truly an international family. I feel so massively privileged that I have got to meet Vineyard pastors and people from Africa, America, Europe and even from Scotland. And every one of them has really felt like family. They have listened to me, valued me, laughed at my jokes and shown me a new and inspiring aspect of Jesus. Each one has massively encouraged me in my faith. I love the diversity of Vineyard. I love the way the global Vineyard stretches my horizons and challenges my assumptions and enriches my experiences. It really is amazing.
The Vineyard truly is fun. In the Vineyard I have met so many Christians who are just great fun. Not fun in a show-off-look-at-me kind of way but just a genuine, assured delight-in-life kind of fun. People who are loud and fun and people who are quiet and fun. I love it so much. So often church can become so unbelievably earnest and serious and I just can’t cope with that. I love Christians with a mischievous glint in their eye and a willingness to go to ridiculous lengths to enjoy others and to affirm the goodness of their God. And what this really means is that the Vineyard is a place not only where I feel like I can truly be myself - but that it is a place that I can enjoy being myself.. and enjoy others being themselves. That is such a rare and beautiful thing I would not swap it for the world.
So there you go. 5 things. I didn’t mention the Vineyard’s focus on the poor, which I should have done. And I didn’t mention church planting or Holy Spirit ministry or loving the whole church either. But I can't be bothered to re-write this whole post. And I don’t suppose anyone in the Vineyard is going to kick up a fuss about what I've said. That is what I love about it as well.
A letter to the great people of SWLV
We are conscious that so many people from SWLV have contributed to the Croydon Vineyard church plant and we really want to make sure that we are providing everyone with as much information as is helpful for them to be encouraged, inspired and equipped to provide any further support they want to provide. Having said that, we are not scouting for more support - we are already overwhelmed by how much God has done and is doing for us!
While we are posting this update on the City, we would like to be able to send updates through to people directly so, if you think you would like to receive updates from us (once a month or so) or if you are thinking you might want to be involved with the church plant in some way then please can you let us know by sending us an email on [email protected].
The long and the short of it is that it’s been a flipping brilliant month. God has been all over us. Here’s a bit of an update on stuff:
Church Plant Group
The team who have been coming along to our church plant house groups are so amazing. We have already seen God do so much in forming us as a group and inspiring us to step out for him. We aren’t meeting this Wednesday because we want to get out there and start gathering people.
Gathering event - Epic Bowling Night - Thursday 24 January, 8pm @tenpin, Valley Park, Croydon (near Ikea)
This will be our first gathering event. We would love you to pray for us to be able to gather people and have an amazing night. If you know anyone who might be interested in coming please do invite them! It would be helpful to have a little crowd of us there to welcome people into. Please give us a shout if you could help out with this.
Hitting the Streets - Saturday 19 January 10am-1130am
Despite the snow this was incredible. As a team we prayed for Croydon and then sought out people who we thought God might be working in. We then tried to chat to them - not necessarily seeking to give them a word or pray for them but just trying to get to learn a bit about the area through them. A few highlights were:
a wonderful lady who was working at a legal desk - she said she was raised catholic but was not tied in anywhere. She loved the idea of us providing community to the lonely. She said she was interested in getting involved with the church & we swapped details
a lady - a shopkeeper of a local newsagents - was so interested in talking to the team that she asked someone else to man the shop while she chatted away. She seemed very keen to see us again and invited us to go back anytime.
a Muslim guy was excited about us starting the church and he talked about how he read the bible with his Catholic girlfriend. We prayed for God to show himself to him.
A security guard - who has recently moved into New Addington - let us pray for him and his wife, that they would know the love and favour of God in their lives.
After this we popped into Matthew’s Yard - a great coffee shop - to have a debrief. It honestly was amazing and we really felt that God had gone ahead of us to prepare people’s hearts. We are so excited about the future.
Websites
We are very proud of our website that Phil and Caroline Greaves have done so much to put together. You can check it out at www.croydonvineyard.org.uk. We also have a facebook page being looked after by the magnificent Joe Edwards-Few - www.facebook.com/croydonvineyard.
Tom’s Job
I got a job! In fact I got 2!! Amazingly after all the CVs I’d submitted and application forms I’d filled out, a job just plopped in my lap without me doing barely anything to get it. I’m going to be teaching sport to 2-6year olds, working 22hrs a week. The pay is enough to get us by so we are feeling hugely grateful to God and delighted about the fun I get to have in my non-church work! And then, Croydon Vineyard trustees also agreed to employ Lesley and I for about 14 hours a week. So all in all, God has been very good! It makes us wonder what we were so worried about back in December!
House Move
All things look like they are on track for us to move in March to an amazing 4 bedroom house in Selsdon, a great little town in South Croydon. We are still sorting out the logistics of school moves but are feeling hugely encouraged and excited about what is in store.
That’s all for now! Like we said, do let us know if you want to receive further updates. You can always check out w
Much love and appreciation for all of you
Tom and Lesley
Momentum
We all crave momentum; a sense that we are part of something that is going somewhere. Croydon Vineyard has got it in spades. God has been all over us for the last couple of weeks. Last nights church plant group was unbelievably awesome. Phil & Caroline cooked a lip-smackingly tasty ham. Claire Edwards-Few led worship and the Spirit of God fell thick. We laughed more than we have done for weeks.
And it is not just in our meetings that we are seeing God blow our socks off - it is also on the personal side as well. I got a job yesterday - pretty much a perfect job for church planting; 22hrs a week coaching kids in sport with a company called Playball, our house move is looking good for early March, and our kids are hugely excited about the move. God is doing what he said he would do - providing for us, protecting us, amazing us with his generosity, exciting us about the future.
This weekend we are hitting the streets of Croydon to seek Jesus, meet some people and down some caffeine.
Then on Thursday we are trying to put together a titanic battle - the young whippersnapper "Croydon Vineyard" against the seasoned old pro "SW London Vineyard" - battling it out over the 10pins for bragging rights and spoils. It will be our first proper gathering event in Croydon. We are trusting God that he will make it victorious for CV... (-; You would be massively welcome to come and join the Croydon Vineyard team.
a video of a ravishingly handsome man talking about why on earth he & his wife are planting Croydon Vineyard
I've been thinking about my post from earlier and have decided it contained heresy, or at the very least some ingredients for exhausting religion. The problem relates to the central activity I called 'seeking God'. In Christianity we don't just seek God with all the activity going up from us; we encounter God as he comes down to us and only then do we respond with with seeking. That is grace. That is Immanuel. That is the birth of Jesus into a world that was not receiving him. That is while we were still sinners Jesus dying for us. That is the Holy Spirit falling on an unworthy church. So I've turned around two arrows and changed "seeking God" to "encountering God". I hope that makes sense.
hey, these guys look pretty cool
I don't think this will be tipped for an oscar but it gives a flavour of our journey so far.
Myrtles in our midst
We have been writing secret weekly updates to our team. We thought we'd share this one a bit more broadly:
A very, very happy new year to you!
It has been a great Christmas. God has been speaking profoundly and has been full of encouragement. We are overflowing with hope. We are bubbling over with love for God’s world. This passage struck us like a mallet on the noggin. We quote it in full because it is so flipping good:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts. As the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thornbush will grow the juniper, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.”
Isaiah 55:8-13
What we love so much about this is not the elaborate collection of horticultural imagery (if you’ve seen our garden you will know that plants aren’t particularly ‘our thing’) but the fact that this is God Almighty speaking grace to a confused, exiled, weak and lost people. Our God has always worked by grace. He has always seen that his people aren’t up to the task but has promised that they will ace it anyway. Our Father has always seen our worst parts and yet promised that we will be led forth in peace. He will use us. All our efforts will yield seed not because our efforts are any good (well, mine aren’t, and don’t even get me started on Phil’s) but because he has chosen to put his word in us (that was what he did through Jesus’ incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection & impartation (pentecost)). He will work in us. Heck, he is already working in us. That is the nature of our ridiculously generous God. So we know it will be an astonishing year. We know that junipers will spring up all over the place. We fully expect to see myrtle in our midst, even if we haven’t got the foggiest what myrtles look like. And it will cause us to speak and shout and sing of the everlasting glory of our enduring God.
Here’s a bit of an update on stuff:
Church Plant Group - starting Weds 9 Jan
We can barely wait until next Weds when we get to start our church plant group. Anyone is more than welcome but please can you let us know ahead of time so we can cook you some food :). The group will meet in our home - 41 Hampton Road, Worcester Park KT4 8EU and will run from 7:45pm to 9:45pm.
Sundays
Until we move to Croydon in March we will continue to attend SW London Vineyard most Sundays. During this time we also aim to visit a couple of Croydon churches. We will let you know the details of any of these visits in case you would like to join us. After we move, we think it will be relatively difficult for us to make it back to SWLV very often but do not expect to be in a position to host our own Sunday services. Things will therefore be quite flexible for a few months. In the next week or two we will let you have our rough plan for Sundays between now and the summer.
Giving to Croydon Vineyard
You will remember that, at our first meeting on 6 Nov, we told you we not only want your presence at our events but also a fair bit of your cash as well. We are in the midst of setting up Croydon Vineyard (CV) as a charity and getting it a bank account. While we wait for this, the best method to give money to CV is to give it to SW London Vineyard and ask for the funds to be allocated to Croydon Vineyard. Lesley and I are doing this with our tithe. If you want to do this you can email SWLV’s bookkeeper, Sally Cobbett, on [email protected].
Praying for Croydon Vineyard
We are going to start producing a fortnightly prayer letter. We will send this out to the huge number of people (over 100 so far) who are keen to support the church plant but are making some excuses about ‘not being able to join the team’. We commit them to the Lord for his mercy ;-). If you have anything you would like to go in this prayer letter please do let us know. All requests will be considered. Not all will be included!
Affiliation to Vineyard Movement
Rather similar to Obama’s ‘Fiscal Cliff’ meetings with John Boehner, after extensive negotiation, significant tension and some name-calling, Tom and Lesley secured membership of Vineyard Churches UK & Ireland. This means that Croydon Vineyard can now actually be called Croydon Vineyard (rather than Croydon ..............) and can use the Vineyard logo. We are, of course, utterly delighted (as is VCUKI).
Tom & Lesley’s personal stuff
With a title like that you may be expecting this section to include details of our sex life. It doesn’t. We know that many of you want to know about our house move, Lesley’s pregnancy and Tom’s job hunt. The house move still looks good, Lesley continues to grow fatter and more beautiful by the day and Tom will continue to be employed by SWLV until the end of January. Having prayed and thought hard over Christmas we really feel that God has been actively stopping Tom from getting a job so far. We are beginning to think we know why that might be but will keep on mulling it over for the next few weeks.
We will endeavour to keep on sending out weekly updates. A bit like the ‘bin men’ we will aim for Mondays but reserve the right to change this (as we have done this week) in the event of bank holidays, bad weather, or faulty machinery.
much love and appreciation for all of you
Tom and Lesley
What's in a name
In all the excitement I forgot to mention that - in the spirit of the Age of Austerity - we have slimmed our name down to Croydon Vineyard. We can also now be found on the vineyardchurches website: http://www.vineyardchurches.org.uk/churches/croydon-vineyard.
We are not planting this church
It has been amazing and deeply humbling over the past few weeks to realise that Lesley and I are not planting this church; a whole community of people is. Or, to put it more accurately, God is doing it through a whole community of people. Lesley and I watched in shock this last Sunday as so many members of SW London Vineyard handed in pledge forms to give so much money to help us get going. The amount given was just under £27,000 which is just a bit flabbergasting. That will give us a great running start in hiring venues, setting up a website and running outreach events (we think that our first year budget, excluding any salaries will probably be about £35,000-£45,000). We are so grateful to God for this money.
But, actually, the amount of money is not what we are most grateful for - we know God will provide more than we need one way or another. What is so encouraging is that the money came from so many different people. What that shows us is that this is not our church plant at all; it is something that God has prompted in our hearts and, at the same time, in the hearts of so many other people. God is birthing this church. Which is great because he will do a far better job at it than we will. And, if he is birthing it then we trust that he will also establish it and if he is establishing it we trust that he will also use it to dramatically extend his kingdom in Croydon. And that is what we desperately want to see happen.
What an amazing honour to be part of a church that God is setting up. We really can't believe it.
