burlesque-grin:
At first Cheshire had assumed the smaller male might’ve just frozen up due to surprise at his change in touch, but as the rabbit tried to shift away from said touch, and went on to mutter about how it felt, he realized that may not have been the case after all. And admittedly, part of him was curious now to see how to rabbit might react if he persisted… But, in the end he decided to continue being nice and heed the rabbit’s muttered request, shifting his hand further down the other’s ear so he could rub part of it between his fingers instead. Once the other pulled away to look at him, the cat returned his gaze, once again tilting his head a bit as he considered how he wanted to answer White’s question. “I’m not entirely sure myself…” he replied somewhat quietly before giving a small sigh.
Truthfully, while the cat had a few reasons in mind for why he wanted to comfort the other, he didn’t quite know which to give. Perhaps he felt guilty over pushing the rabbit to feel further alone, even though he’d felt, at the time at least, that it might’ve been better for the story. Or perhaps it was because lately he simply didn’t like to see him looking sad, or maybe it was something different all together… Regardless though, he somewhat doubted that the other would really believe any reason he offered, but even so he went on to offer one of them. “Hmm… I suppose it might be because lately, I just don’t like seeing you upset… So, I wanted to do something about it.” again replying rather quietly, he then shrugged slightly.
As the cat thought, White didn’t entirely believe what the Ches was saying, his expression he was giving to him was incredulous as he searched his face. There wasn’t a way in hell that was true, was it? After all, this guy is basically... The reason he was alone here in the first place. His words seemed to be complete and utter bull. He could never tell what this cat was thinking... In honesty White had a hard time trying to bring himself to believe what he was saying, a soft and unconvinced laugh leaking through thin lips.
“What? You’re kidding right?” he asked these questioned, pushing himself away from the other with a sigh. “Honestly... I forgot that how I really feel doesn’t really matter to you in the end,” he breathed out, turning away from him and beginning to walk off down the hall again. “You’re probably going to berate me again for trying to seek comfort in you later. I get it... Okay? I still love Alice... But I can’t help but think of what point there would be to... If I...”
“I don’t... I don’t want to die,” he muttered, gazing toward a door, slowly turning toward it and gazing into what he imagined to be an open space where Marianne sat. “It’s not me who deserves to be happy though. I’ll keep playing... Pretending as though everything will be good. I’ll be a hero, wouldn’t I? To save Marianne... To save Alice...”
